In Depth: Abrams out, Maddow in…

I had first started hearing noises eminating out of 30 Rock a month or so ago that Verdict with Dan Abrams’ future was less than rock solid. But I didn’t believe the story. It didn’t make any sense. Verdict had only been rebranded a few months earlier and now its future was being questioned? Didn’t pass the smell test. That sort of knee jerk reaction change was a notorious hallmark of MSNBC back in 2000-2003. But in the years since, MSNBC had exhibited a much greater patience level with its programming in both daytime and primetime. It kept Tucker Carlson on the air for much longer despite anemic ratings. So this noise about Verdict flew in the face of all that and I didn’t buy it. I was wrong.

The New York Times’ Bill Carter scoops that Verdict is off the air effective Friday, with Rachel Maddow to take over the slot.

The moves, which were confirmed by MSNBC executives Tuesday, are expected to be finalized by Wednesday, with Mr. Abrams’s last program on Thursday. After MSNBC’s extensive coverage of the two political conventions during the next two weeks, Ms. Maddow will begin her program on Sept. 8.

MSNBC is highlighting the date, 9/8/08, connecting it to the start of the Olympics on 8/8/08, as a way to signal what the network’s president, Phil Griffin, said “will be the final leg of the political race this year.” He added, “We making that Rachel’s debut.”

Mr. Abrams, who is well liked at MSNBC, is expected to remain at both that network and at NBC News, where he is the chief legal correspondent. He will also serve as an anchor during some of MSNBC’s daytime coverage, as well as a substitute host on NBC’s “Today” show, Mr. Griffin said.

We should have seen this coming. A month ago, I noted that Verdict had lost an hour on Fridays. It was suggested that this was temporary but I remained skeptical.

MSNBC now has the most ideologically partisan primetime in all of cable news. For all the barbs thrown at FNC over the years, it can’t come close to touching MSNBC in that department in prime.

From 7-11 pm you have the non partisan Fox Report, the ideologically libertarian/conservative O’Reilly Factor, the Conservative leaning Hannity & Colmes (of course it’s conservative leaning. The show is all about Hannity despite the name. If Hannity left, the show would tank in the ratings. If Colmes left, the show would find another liberal and the ratings would remain steady), and the ideologically neutral On The Record.

CNN has the ideologially Libertarian Lou Dobbs Tonight, followed by the comparatively ideologically neutral CNN Election Center, Larry King Live, and Anderson Cooper 360.

MSNBC has the the at best ideologically neutral to liberal leaning Hardball, the ideologially liberal partisan Countdown, and now the ideologically liberal partisan program Maddow will host. In a head to head comparison of program slant, MSNBC wins it going away easily.

And this is no accident. Once Air America started simulcasting Race for the White House, the truth was revealed. MSNBC primetime has deliberately shifted left as a business decision. Adding the liberal Maddow at the expense of the much more middle of the road Verdict is more proof that O’Reilly guessed right about what NBC was up to.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that. If MSNBC wants to turn left as a business decision that’s their prerogative. If it brings in more viewers, great for them. But, and this is the elephant in the room, MSNBC so far has refused to admit what it’s doing (just as Olbermann refused for years to admit his show tilted left until months after he started doing his Special Comments). These moves are deliberate and well thought out. MSNBC can’t continue with the pretense that this is some sort of naturally occuring thing. It has no credibility any more to persuasively make that argument. The evidence, which is now well documented, overwhelmingly says otherwise.

Another factoid? The involvement of Keith Olbermann. Olbermann admitted today on Daily Kos that he had something to do with this.

Yes, I had something to do with it.

To what extent Olbermann was involved isn’t known. But this will do nothing to refute the persistent rumor that NBC gives increasing deference to Olbermann in how primetime is handled. It also renews speculation of a rift between Olbermann and Abrams which began way back when Page Six noted that Olbermann stopped handing off live to Abrams at the end of Countdown.

One this is for certain. MSNBC isn’t just “The place for politics” anymore. It’s now also the place for liberals. And not just your run of the mill liberal either, but the far left true believer liberal. Conservatives or moderates need not apply apparently…

“Mr. Abrams, who is well liked at MSNBC, is expected to remain at both that network and at NBC News, where he is the chief legal correspondent.”

Ha, the same sentiment was made about Tucker Carlson, who became “chief campaign correspondent” (or something like that). Tucker makes very few cameos these days…..Pat Buchanan is a much bigger presence. They will probably use him to comment on legal issues here and there while waiting for his current contract to expire and then cut him loose.

Maddow will do well but, as you said, will have a loyal but narrow audience.
Olbermann was enough…..I don’t understand why they would put Maddow on back-to-back with Countdown. Will they still re-run Countdown at 10pm? Doesn’t seem like a very smart business move.

  2. I posted about this a few minutes ago on Free for All. As a moderate-lefty, I have no problem with MSNBC being a haven for Dems, as FNC is for Repubs [as long as they're honest about it, which neither is], but replacing another good show [nee, Race for Tucker] with Maddow is extremely annoying. I may agree with her 90% of the time, but she bugs me. Verdict wasn’t great, but it was mildly enjoyable with good guests, as was Tucker.

OK MSNBC, redeem yourselves. Replace RftWH with Michelle Bernard after the election.

Tucker, Verdict: the curse of Beat the Press!

  3. I think its absolutely hilarious Dan Abrams goes from basically saying 9pm was too good to pass up.. And ends up getting the shaft from that very 9pm show, eh!

  4. I agree with Bushleaguer. By going Olbermann/Maddow/Olbermann every night from 8 to 11, I think they’re spreading their audience too thin. And that audience isn’t all that big to begin with. The question is: will she take audience away from Olbermann, or will his audience stay tuned in for two hours?

But let me say this: I think Maddow is simply more talented than Olbermann. And she’s probably willing to work harder. Olbermann is too lazy to do any fact-checking on any story that makes someone like O’Reilly look bad. He simply repeats the story, without attribution or verification. Maddow hopefully knows better. And unlike Olbermann, she may actually try to engage the other side. I thought she did this pretty well when she was on Tucker. Olbermann doesn’t have the ability to do this; his show nowadays is nothing more than a 60 minute campaign commercial.

Lets see Olbermann at 8..Maddow at 9 and a Olbermann repeat at 10..ewwww!!!….I just had a disturbing image of a Olbermann/Maddow/Olbermann sandwich…Oh god!!!! please get that picture out of my mind!!!…. LOL!!!

  6. What they ought to do is put Dan on at 10 et. Then they can have a more complete (and less monotonous) lineup. One can only take so much politics. Dan Abrams had good segments.

  7. bushleaguer Says:

Good point willier re: having opposing views on the show. What makes Olbermann’s show so lacking is any debate….Maddow could make for better viewing if she invites Republicans on to go back and forth with (just not in the talking over one another Hannity & Colmes way).

I saw her on Countdown tonight and it was clear that they are going to focus on the same audience….saying that she hopes Olbermann’s audience will want to hang around for her show.

    Spud,

MSNBC dayside is not partisan, the commentators are. If the Comme ntators and news reporting stay separate (which I believe is true) then what’s the problem?

If it makes money do it. FOX has for 11 years.

  9. D-i-v-e-r-s-i-t-y…

FNC has more of it in prime than MSNBC now. I never thought I’d see that happen…

BTW, who said anything about dayside? I didn’t.

  10. asleeporawake Says:

Fox would be ripped to shreds if they tried to slant their primetime lineup to this degree. MSNBC does it and everyone just shrugs. The sad thing here to me is that Olbermann and MSNBC have become what they mock. Has this country really come to the point that the only way to score ratings is by turning your network into the official press spokesperson for a particular political party? I like Rachel: she’s smart, tough, and isn’t afraid to debate GOPers. In short, she’s everything that Olbermann isn’t; but this to me signals the end of MSNBC even pretending to have any sort of impartial stance and reflects badly on the entire NBC family. And wha’ts the real message here? Be liberal or Olbermann will have your ass fired? 1st Tucker and now Dan Abrams. That speaks volumes to me and seems to indicate all the gossip about him flexing his muscle at MSNBC was all true. And his credentials to run a network would be exactly what?

  11. number1tfan Says:

    mlong5000 – THANKS – I just lost my breakfast!!
icn2Says: I guess FNC’s ratings will now go through the roof, but KO will never admit it, what a joke and a WASTE OF TIME.

  12. Mike Beckham Says:

    Oh Come on Spud.

O’Reilly > Right (I don’t accept he is middle of the road AT all). Special Report > Right (If you have watched it, you get it – not the first 1/2 the 2nd). Hannity and Colmes > All Alan does is defend – it’s Sean’s show, so I’ll put that in right.

Compared to two and half lefties. I don’t see either much different now days.

Now I don’t give a you know what if commentators slant which ever way as long as they are honest. As long as the reporting on straight news is down the line there isn’t a problem. All MSNBC is doing is a chasing a market left in the cold at FOX.

  13. NBC News is the big loser here. They will never be seen as an unbiased news source again. When Russert died, he took NBC News’ reputation with him.

  14. topthecharts Says:

All MSNBC is doing is a chasing a market left in the cold at FOX.

Mike: And what about CNN (domestic Mike, not International) which according to a new Pew survey, primarily has a liberal/Democrat audience?

At best, MSNBC seems to be chasing a very limited market.
