Cambpell Brown vs. Rush Limbaugh (vs. Ali Velshi vs. Limbaugh)
Posted in CNN on January 30, 2009 by icn2Tonight on “No Bias, No Bull”, Campbell Brown put Rush Limbaugh in her crosshairs over Limbaugh’s attack on Ali Velshi after Velshi criticized parts of Limbaugh’s WSJ article). Transcript follows…
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, “THE RUSH LIMBAUGH SHOW”)
RUSH LIMBAUGH, RADIO TALK SHOW HOST: Mr. Velshi, you are incompetent. You are a disservice to your business, except you fit right in at CNN, disinformation, character assaults. This economy is nowhere near as bad as it was in 1982.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
BROWN: So, let’s stop there.
Now, Mr. Limbaugh, you may well have a legitimate case to make about tax cuts and what they can do for the economy, but the histrionics and the name-calling, they undermine anything constructive you might have to say.
Rush, I would love for you to come on, on this show and debate Ali on the issues. Make a case for your ideas. Our country is in desperate straits right now, and we need ideas. But what we don’t need is nasty rhetoric and useless noise. This doesn’t help anyone get a job or keep a job or feed their family.

Reviewing the Personal Finance Show Landscape…
Posted in Miscellaneous Subjects on January 30, 2009 by icn2Troy Patterson in Slate reviews the state of Personal Finance shows on cable…
Troy from New York on the line. Thanks for taking my call. Here’s the question: With the vicious downturn in the economy, there’s been an upswing in personal-finance TV. Should we be bullish or bearish about shows in which the public phones in to wheeze and vent and plead for counsel? Buy, hold, or sell?

Heather Nauert to split time between Fox 5 and FNC…
Posted in FNC on January 30, 2009 by icn2The New York Daily News’ Richard Huff writes about Heather Nauert’s new Fox5 NY duties. TVNewser wrote about this yesterday, but I didn’t read it until today.
Nauert spent four years at Fox News Channel before jumping to ABC. She returned to FNC to co-anchor “The Big Story” with John Gibson, and later became a fill-in anchor at the network. She also anchors an hour each day at Foxnews.com.
She did a handful of fill-ins with Lamberty before being given the job full time, effectively replacing Karen Hepp, who had been doing early mornings. Hepp remains with the station as a correspondent and anchor.
“I don’t think there will be any challenges,” Nauert said of the transition to Ch. 5. “I kind of feel it will be like a second home for me.”
Her fill-in jobs at Ch. 5 already gave her a feel for the place and the style of news delivery on “Good Day Wake Up.”
“I think the style is to tell it in an interesting and compelling way,” she said. “You want to capture the viewers’ interest.”
Shuster vs. O’Reilly…
Posted in FNC, MSNBC on January 30, 2009 by icn2J$ tipped me off to this yesterday (but he didn’t know I was incommunicado until this morning). But this is Shuster’s show, not MSNBC Dayside, so I give Shuster more latitude than I would if this exchange had occurred during Dayside. If he wants to use his show as a platform to denounce Bill O’Reilly, heavy handed as the attack was, it’s his prerogative.

Velshi Chairs ‘Money Summit’ to Examine Economic Challenges Facing President Obama

This Anderson Cooper 360° special, “CNN Money Summit,” airs on Friday, Jan. 30, at 11 p.m. (ET) and Saturday, Jan. 31 at 8 p.m. (ET)
Velshi and a panel of experts will explore the big questions facing President Barack Obama about the economic crisis using the latest on-air technologies and iReports to advance the conversation. Anchor Wars: 01/29/08
Posted in Anchor Wars 2009 on January 29, 2009 by icn2Back into the anchor lotto bowl we go…and out comes…
FNC’s Kelly Wright and MSNBC’s Peter Alexander…
BTW, I’ve been giving some thought about a potential problem that could arise more than once during this contest. What to do in the event of a tie. There are two options, one of which I came up with, the other suggested by Johnny Dollar. First, I could extend the voting by a set amount of time. The problem with this is it could delay the next day’s voting (unless I ran it in parallel). The other option is to just declare a tie and toss the names back in the bowl going on the theory that the two won’t go head to head again. And they likely won’t. Unless they’re the last two names for a given round. I’m leaning towards the latter option but wanted to hear your opinions on the subject.
Final Tally: Kelly Wright moves on…
Reviewing Glenn Beck…
Posted in FNC on January 29, 2009 by icn2Chickaboomer writes about the Glenn Beck show…
When conservative radio talker Glenn Beck showed up in the 5p slot on Fox News 10 days ago I was not impressed. I’d caught bits of Beck before proclaiming in this space that I wasn’t “100 percent in love.”
I have changed my mind. On the 10th day Beck rose again and I watched the whole program. Beck’s producer has ditched the weird, awkward elevated shots that made Beck’s head look huge. No more drawing stuff on his anchor desk at bad camera angles.
Beck’s checked his ego at the studio door and is refreshingly watchable compared with his angry colleagues Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity. (Rival MSNBC tirelessly touts obnoxious ego-driven blowhards Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann.)
Becky Quick on Davos…
Posted in CNBC on January 29, 2009 by icn2CNBC’s Becky Quick writes about covering Davos in Portfolio…
This year is a little different at Davos.
It’s colder, for starters. And the tone is more somber than in years past.
And then there’s the first question journalists ask each other when gathering behind the scenes.
In years past, as journalists cozied up for a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, the first question we’d ask one another was inevitably, “Who do you have lined up for interviews?”
It’s that competitive streak we all feel. We have to measure up our “gets” against each other. And we have to make sure we haven’t forgotten to ask an obvious newsmaker for a sit down.
This year though, the question is slightly different: “Who’s canceled on you today?”
Because this year, the headline guests are dropping like flies.
Jericho vs. Rourke?
Posted in CNN on January 28, 2009 by icn2The LA Times’ Debbie Goffa blogs about the Chris Jericho/Mickey Rourke showdown on Larry King last night…
It all started on Sunday with Rourke, in a red carpet interview with “Extra” before the Screen Actors Guild Awards, challenging Jericho to a wrestling match. It appeared to be all in good fun.
King, of course, knows a good thing when he sees it and arranged for the two men to be on his show. But was Jericho following a script? Rourke took the high road, said he had all the respect in the world for Jericho and backed away from any match.

CNN Appoints Correspondents in Afghanistan, China, United Arab Emirates
CNN Worldwide will add three new international correspondents in Afghanistan, China and the United Arab Emirates, it was announced today by Parisa Khosravi, senior vice president of international newsgathering.
Over the past 12 months, CNN has appointed more than a dozen correspondents in seven new locations as part of an aggressive content ownership strategy. These latest hires boost CNN’s international newsgathering locations to 33.
“The resources available to CNN’s international newsgathering team have never been more robust,” Khosravi said. “By adding correspondents in these three strategic areas, CNN underscores its international newsgathering heritage.”
In Kabul, Afghanistan, Atia Abawi will serve as correspondent responsible for covering the country and the on-going war there. Abawi, a former assignment editor and producer for CNN’s international desk in Atlanta, joined CNN in 2004 and has worked on a number of stories including the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, the Afghanistan-Korean hostage situation and Youssif, the young Iraqi boy burned by insurgents in Iraq.

Anchor Wars: 01/28/09
Posted in Anchor Wars 2009 on January 28, 2009 by icn2Ok, here we go. Note: If you want to vote but don’t know how to register to comment, you go to WordPress.com and register there. And, yes J$, I was thinking about calling this “American Anchor” but that’s just too sarcastic…even for me. One vote per commenter. And a slight modification to yesterday’s rules. If you vote, you can comment on other comments/votes. If you don’t vote but comment, the comment will be deleted. And flame wars will be most definitely be snuffed out without explanation. I know how touchy you all can get about your favorite anchors…
Today’s contestants…
oh no…
This was totally random…I swear! I just picked one and then another. Without looking. I should have known this could happen…
MSNBC’s Alex Witt and MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann…
Final Tally: It was closer than I figured, given the anti-Olbermann mob on ICN, but votes for Alex edged out Keith by a few votes (even after I tossed out the vote from the guy who never heard of “Mr. Witt”)…yeah…if you’re going to vote you have to at least know who you’re voting for…
John King Interview
Posted in CNN on January 28, 2009 by icn2Editor and Publisher’s Charles Geraci interviews CNN’s John King…
“Four hours is a challenge, but it’s a great opportunity to do more and to be different,” King said. “We will be different than any other show on television on Sunday morning. And that’s not to criticize the others … but with the time and with my passion to get out of Washington, we’re able to do some things differently that I hope give it a greater connection to people who aren’t in Washington.”
Two days after traveling to Ohio last Friday to tape an interview with now-President Obama–King was the only anchor to have Obama on the Sunday before Tuesday’s inauguration–he made reference to the Cleveland Plain Dealer on his show.
“Because of my show, we brought in some newspapers from around the country, just to take a look at how the Obama pre-inaugural coverage was going,” King told E&P.
Conflict of Interest?
Posted in CNBC on January 28, 2009 by icn2Page Six dishes about Maria Bartiromo…
MARIA Bartiromo scored the first post-axing interview with booted Merrill Lynch chief John Thain Monday – but CNBC’s “Money Honey” kept viewers in the dark about the little business arrangement that may have helped it happen. Turns out she and Thain both pay public relations guru Ken Sunshine to represent them, and he apparently helped set up the exclusive. “It’s a huge conflict of interest. It’s incredible she didn’t disclose this over the air, but she thinks she’s above it all,” one broadcast insider told Page Six. “And she was really kissing Thain’s ass during the interview.” Sunshine admitted to us he represents both Bartiromo and Thain, the latter having hired him just recently. “The relationship between John and Maria long precedes our relationship with him,” Sunshine insisted. But he had no comment on whether he had a hand in lining up the interview. CNBC didn’t get back to us.
Announcing Anchor Wars 2009
Posted in Anchor Wars 2009 on January 27, 2009 by icn2I’ve been thinking about doing this for a while now but I’m finally set up to do it. Starting tomorrow, ICN is launching a competition called Anchor Wars 2009. Basically, each day I will pick two news anchors at random and you will vote for a winner. The winner will move on to the next round. The process will continue until there is a winner.
The Competition
Anchors from CNN, HLN, MSNBC, and FNC will be in the competition. CNBC and FBN will face off later in a seperate business news competition. I didn’t feel it appropriate to mix business anchors and straight news anchors as the two are different enough that it would cause problems.
What I have done is printed out the contestants and cut up each in a seperate piece of paper and thrown them into a bowl which will be tossed about each morning to randomize the contestants. Then I reach in and pick two pieces of paper and voila…we have the days’ contestants. Here’s the bowl, all set to go…

What I really like about this process is it’s totally random. You could theoretically have Shepard Smith going up against another high profile FNC anchor. Or Brian Williams going up against Lester Holt. You could have Williams going up against Smith on the first day, which really puts the pressure on the voters. In theory, if the contestants are eliminated in a certain way, you would wind up with Uma Pemmaraju going up against Carol Costello in the final. Unlikely, but it’s possible.
The Selection Process

Foxnews.com Wants Your Ad Business..
Posted in FNC on January 27, 2009 by icn2
Looking over the new foxnews.com website I noticed a link at the bottom of the page. It may have been there prior to today’s re-launch but I noticed it today. Click on it and you’re taken to another page that’s a big pitch page to potential advertisers. The Audience Profile link gives the pitch that foxnews.com is the #1 site among “competitive news sites” in the following demographics – Time spent per person, Pages per person, and visits per month…though it doesn’t cite the reference for these rankings on that page. The page is clearly aimed at advertisers looking for the “C-Level Executive/Owner”…whatever that means.

On Thursday, February 12th at 8PM & 12AM ET, CNBC presents “House of Cards,” an original CNBC documentary reported by award-winning correspondent David Faber. In this two-hour special, CNBC investigates the origins of the global economic collapse. Faber gathers the personal stories of key participants: home buyers, mortgage brokers, investment bankers and investors – all of whom let greed blind them to marketplace realities. It is their words and experiences – not those of pundits or commentators – that bring to life the painful story of the greatest financial crisis since the Great Depression.
