The Factor goes HD…sort of…

ICN told you back in December that The O’Reilly Factor would get a new makeover. Tonight the wraps came off as The Factor launched in a new set with new graphics and in HD….although it seems that the video doesn’t appear HD but the graphics are. If that’s 720P it’s not very good 720P. It’s certainly not 1080P or 1080i. I’ve seen this before with my local affiliate KRON which is clearly broadcasting its news in HD but it’s the blurriest HD I’ve ever seen. Fox and Friends and The Fox Report have better HD video than The Factor does right now. Why the HD video discrepancy?

  1. Looked HD to me. All those wrinkles in Bill’s face! And I could see the writing on the papers he had in front of him. Remember that DirecTV has been reducing their HD res to save bandwidth (don’t know if that’s still going on), and that’s the sort of thing that would affect camera more than graphics.

  2. I’ve seen the compression changes on some of my local affilliates and their images look sharper than Bill did. I dunno. The graphics looked really sharp though. So I’m not sure what’s going on. I’ll have to look again tonight at 11…

It’s just the old Fox Report set right?

  6. I forgot I had a dinner engagement tonight so I missed the 11pm replay. I’ll have to DVR tomorrow night to take a look But It still didn’t seem at the time like it was 720P HD. O’Reilly’s pin stripes were really muddled, far more muddled than 720P would allow for. Compression wouldn’t necessarily be the cause of that. Upconversion of some sort would however.

  9. [...] exactly is the story of The O’Reilly Factor in HD? When The Factor went HD in February, I noted that it seemed “off”. The next day TVNewser reported that The Factor would be full HD [...]

  10. [...] HD. The upgrade is expected to take about 90 days. Inside Cable News first spotted this last night, but questioned why there was a discrepancy between The Factor in HD and other FNC shows which are true HD. [...]
