Rick Santelli – Does this one really need explanation…
Twitter – Cable news talent’s Twitter use was all the discussion this week, spurned on mostly by a bunch of NBC/MSNBC like David Gregory and Davis Shuster jumping on the Twitter bandwagon the past couple of weeks.
What’s Not:
Bright Blue Scrotum – Some websites were duped by a bogus YouTube video which tried to make it look like John Gibson had used the term.
Diving to 130 feet – You spend 5 minutes getting down, 5-6 minutes max on the bottom to avoid having to make a long decompression stop, and then 9 minutes going back up. That’s a 20 minute dive with only 6 minutes of bottom time. I can spend an 40 minutes on the bottom diving at 60 feet. But to go to 130 feet you have to make trade offs. And then you can’t dive again for at least an hour while your body dumps the nitrogen your body built up going down to 130 feet. Oh, and to top it off you’re narked when you’re on the bottom so you can’t fully appreciate what you’re seeing anyways because your brain is taking a break from reality.

CNBC’s “NEWBOs: The Rise of the New Black Overclass” Will Premiere Thursday, February 26th at 9PM & 1AM ET on CNBC
CNBC’s “NEWBOs: The Rise of America’s New Black Overclass,” is an original one-hour primetime documentary about the growing wave of young black multimillionaires coming out of the sports, media and entertainment industries. This project examines the rise of “Newbos,” — young black athletes, entertainers, and creative entrepreneurs – who, with the right amount of financial literacy, collaboration, intergenerational mentorship and social awareness, could have a profound, positive impact on black America. The special, hosted by Wall Street Journal reporter and CNBC correspondent Lee Hawkins, who coined the term “Newbo,” is based on Hawkins’ forthcoming book of the same title.
Newbos captures the pressures and prominence of the fascinating Newbo class and includes data about the wealth and financial impact of black athletes and entrepreneurial black music moguls in America.Contradicting old-guard leaders who assert that Newbos offer little to the black community as a whole, Hawkins puts the spotlight on the entrepreneurial, social and charitable efforts of several Newbos and their contagious financial power. The documentary offers behind-the-marquee stories on several high-profile Newbos, including NBA superstar LeBron James, Major League All-Star Torii Hunter, The Williams brothers of Cash Money Records, Dallas Cowboy star Terrell Owens, billionaire entrepreneur and Newbo pioneer Bob Johnson and musician, Multiplatinum gospel star Kirk Franklin, and television network owner Wyclef Jean.

FBN Wins FOIA Suit
Posted in FBN on February 20, 2009 by icn2Broadcasting & Cable’s Alex Weprin writes that FBN won a FOIA suit against the government…
Fox Business Network has won its lawsuit against the United States Treasury Department.
As a result of the victory, the U.S. Treasury will have until March 23 to comply with a Freedom of Information Act request filed by FBN parent network Fox News last year. The Treasury will also have until April 6 to provide a Vaughn Index, which identifies withheld documents and the statutes justifying their exclusion.

Posted in Miscellaneous Subjects on February 20, 2009 by icn2The Canadian Press’ Lee-Anne Goodman takes on the US media over its Canadian coverage yesterday…
American news channels, bloggers and others who watched live on Thursday as U.S. President Barack Obama visited Ottawa were largely complimentary and admiring of Canada, even if they were somewhat unfamiliar with what they seemed to consider their quaint neighbour to the north.
“We love those Canadians; they’re good people,” CNN anchor Kyra Phillips said at one point during the cable news network’s coverage of Obama’s first foreign trip as president.
Later, however, Phillips said: “All eyes are on Ottawa right now — you don’t hear that every day.”
Her colleague, Fredricka Whitfield, was stumped earlier in the day when Air Force One first landed in Ottawa and a line of Mounties — clad in their traditional red serge jackets and Stetsons — marched out to greet the president on the airport tarmac.
Pausing as she attempted to describe the scene to viewers, Whitfield apparently took a wild guess and referred to them as “troops.”

There’s only one problem with all this: the video posted by HuffPo is a fake. The three words allegedly spoken by Gibson, “bright blue scrotum”, are actually in Trace Gallagher’s voice. Those words were lifted from a few moments earlier and pasted over Gibson’s actual sentence: “We were talking about Eric Holder today on the radio and his comment that this is a nation of cowards.” But don’t take our word for it. See, and hear, for yourself:

Here Comes the Santelli Blowback…
Posted in CNBC on February 19, 2009 by icn2You just knew the hype over Santelli’s outburst would subside and people would start looking at what he actually said. And then the blowback would come. CJR Daily’s Ryan Chittum has the honor of being one of the first. I doubt it’ll be the last. Earlier I said Santelli did a Howard Beale. I take it back. He did a Jim Cramer. Total meltdown…
In the annals of CNBC cluelessness, this morning’s outburst by the channel’s Rick Santelli is up there with the worst.
This is an example of what’s wrong with a certain kind of financial journalism, the kind where people of like backgrounds spend all day staring at tickers and interviewing each other.
The segment couldn’t more clearly illustrate the disconnect between the financial-services sector, certain financial journalists, and, you know, “reality.”
This was CNBC’s worst performance in an entire week—since Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, Dennis Kneale, Roben Farzad & Co. made horses’ rear-ends of themselves trying to squeeze investment tips out of two of the leading thinkers on the global financial crisis, Nouriel Roubini and Nassim Nicholas Taleb.

Know thy Subject…
Posted in Miscellaneous Subjects on February 19, 2009 by icn2The Washington Times’ Robyn-Denise Yourse and Elizabeth Glover try to make some hay at Jeff Immelt’s expense…
Recent Internet chatter has speculated about why on-air personalities such as David Gregory and Mika Brzezinski at GE subsidiary NBC and MSNBC seem to be flocking to Twitter, the social networking and news site. Could it be in part because of Six Sigma, GE’s management strategy?
Is Mr. Immelt a Six Sigma expert, or “Black Belt” as they’re called? “No,” he confessed. “I never was.”
I read this earlier and laughed. I wasn’t going to blog about it because it was so stupid. But then J$ sent me an email asking about Twitter and Six Sigma so I’ve changed my mind.
If Yourse and Glover had bothered to do even the most basic research they would have realized what I already knew because of my line of work. Six Sigma is a Quality term used in Quality Assurance and Quality Management. Attaining Black Belt status requires a lot of work and training (not to mention $$$ for the certification). It has nothing to do with Twitter or any social networking and even if GE does have a Six Sigma policy it wouldn’t pertain to establishing a web presence as a PR tool. I feel like giving Yourse and Glover Worst Persons in the World status for this because this story is pure idiocy. But Olbermann would probably sue for trademark infringement, so I won’t.
Rick Santelli has a Howard Beale Moment…
Posted in CNBC on February 19, 2009 by icn2This is classic TV but Santelli isn’t saying anything I haven’t already heard before on CNBC and FBN. The only difference is the cheerleading from the peanut gallery behind Santelli. A pretty good cross section of America? Traders? Umm…talk about preaching to the choir and stacking the deck. Let’s see Santelli get that kind of response in some of the harder hit sections of our Economy…
Erin Burnett Profile…
Posted in CNBC on February 19, 2009 by icn2Emmy Magazine‘s Christine Champagne profiles CNBC’s Erin Burnett. Here’s a snippet from the currently offline article.
Apparently, viewers like the duo’s mix of hard news and high jinks. Since Burnett began anchoring with Haines, viewership of Squawk on the Street is up 129 percent.
Meanwhile, Burnett also does well on her own: Street Signs, which she began anchoring in early 2006, is up 69 percent in total viewers since her debut.
Already a major player in financial news just a few years into her career, Burnett could likely continue covering the business world for decades to come. Would she like to branch out in broad- casting?
“I think the beauty of my situation is I cover business and money, which is a niche in journalism, but it’s one of the most important things in terms of mak-ing the world go round. So I think being able to have it as my base of strength is great,” Burnett muses. “But when you talk about telling broader stories, yeah, I’d have to say I’d like to do that.”
MSNBC goes Twitter crazy…
Posted in MSNBC on February 18, 2009 by icn2Is there some sort of internal directive at MSNBC to get on Twitter? Olbermann and Maddow have been on for a while, though Olbermann’s feed stopped last September for some reason. Mika started in December. But things have ratcheted up in the past couple of weeks. Now David Shuster, Tamron Hall, Luke Russert, David Gregory, and Contessa Brewer have started tweeting. And is this MSNBC head Phil Griffin’s first tweets? Judging by who’s already following it may be.

Lobbying for 10pm…
Posted in MSNBC on February 18, 2009 by icn2The LA Times’ Matea Gold writes about progressives lobbying for MSNBC’s 10pm slot…
MSNBC President Phil Griffin said he’s not necessarily looking for someone who shares the political leanings of Olbermann and Maddow, but is delighted by the response.
“If people identify with us, I’m thrilled,” he said.
“Obviously, we’re going to have flow between our shows,” Griffin added. “But it isn’t going to be ideology that drives it. I want that hour to be edgy, to be smart, to be a little snarky.”
At this point, the search for a new host is just an “aspiration,” said Griffin, noting that the network may not even select someone by the year’s end. But he said he had been floored by the reaction, which has included “dozens and dozens of phone calls from people I never thought about or considered.”
“It’s just incredible and just shows you where MSNBC is,” he said. “We’ve had times when hours have been open and nobody noticed.”
The end of the year? MSNBC can’t wait that long. It needs to strike now while there’s momentum.

Fight!
Posted in CNN, FNC, MSNBC on February 18, 2009 by icn2It’s been a while since we had a good back and forth between FNC and CNN. Two things puzzle me though. 1) Why now? It’s not like CNN did something outrageous with their ratings lately. So why is FNC picking this fight now? 2) Why drag MSNBC into this? MSNBC has had its PR sights on CNN and not FNC (if you exclude the world of Keith Olbermann that is) and has not in recent memory deliberately massaged numbers in an effort to get FNC (if you exclude the world of Keith Olbermann that is). So my take is FNC goes after MSNBC because of Olbermann. Not that FNC doesn’t have a salient point here. FNC continues to dominate the news landscape, even if you include CNN’s demo victory at 10pm.
As to the back and forth, both CNN and FNC are guilty of spinning their story rosy and the other guys’ story not so rosy. But then what would you expect? An honest assessment?

Mika Brzezinski Interview
Posted in MSNBC on February 18, 2009 by icn2Leslie Stahl interviews Mika Brzezinski on The Women on the Web. This is pretty close to a must read…
LESLEY: I guess my point was, now that you do this kind of a show, Joe Scarborough comes on every day and says, “I’m a conservative.” Are you trying to preserve your objectivity by not telling us? In other words, what roles are you playing on the show, politically?
MIKA: It’s a great question and I will answer it as honestly as I possibly can, given the fact that I am still trying to find my voice. My role is evolving. It started out as the objective reporter and obviously that changed. If you take everything I’ve ever said on “Morning Joe” and put it in right/left boxes, chances are you won’t really know my affiliation. I would say I’d lean to the left, but it’s not necessarily my role. My role is to challenge Joe when necessary and for the two of us to try our best to create an accessible show. And I would say my role is far less ideological and on one side than Joe’s, although I’m happy to lean left when necessary, because that feels more natural to me.
