Keith Olbermann vs. TVNewser…
Before I go completely offline for the next few days or so I just have to comment on this Keith Olbermann post on Daily Kos regarding TVNewser’s reporting on whether MSNBC producers were told not to mention the Cramer/Stewart showdown…(via J$)
So I’m reading the TVNewser post for the first time.
Frankly, the guy who posted this, the site’s Associate Editor, Steve Krakauer (“SteveK”), is well known around the industry as being entirely in Fox’s pocket.
His “MSNBC producers have been told” not to mention this, is, frankly, bullshit.
Have a look at his posts on this otherwise successfully neutral site: they are Fox News and Fox Business Channel press release rewrites, and anonymous criticisms from “industry sources” of people at CNN and MSNBC.
The Fox Business stuff is particularly egregious and particularly relevant to this. If a newspaper with a circulation of 500 people runs a feature on somebody on that channel, SteveK summarizes it, posts a picture from it, posts a link to it. I mean, seriously, if there’s been any publicity for this channel that has yet to get a measurable audience after a year on the air (that means they’re under 15,000 viewers), that hasn’t gotten a link on TVNewser courtesy SteveK, it’d be a shocking upset.
Rachel could get the cover of Newsweek and he wouldn’t link to it.
So, did Stewart do a good job? Obviously. Did we get ordered not to run it? Nope. Was stirring up rumors about a ban in the interest of a Foxophilic blogger with the credibility of a bush league Drudge? You bet.
Wow. Just wow. Ok, first of all I know for a fact of at least one incident where FNC was seriously pissed off with something Krakauer wrote and stood by so that sort of undermines Olbermann’s argument that Krakauer is in FNC’s pocket. Second of all, Olbermann can’t seperate Ariens away from Krakauer on this. Krakauer may have wrote it but you can bet your ass Ariens approved it. If he’s going to attack Krakauer, he has to attack Ariens. That would put Olbermann in a bind though because whatever you may think of TVN, and I’ve had my issues with that blog on occasion for ducking taking a stand on things they probably should, Ariens has been more than fair and even handed for the most part in how TVN covers the industry. And that would include Ariens’ management of Krakauer. It would also include Maddow getting the cover of Newsweek.
But Olbermann is showing with his attack that he doesn’t understand TVN’s purpose and position in the industry. It’s the Entertainment Tonight of cable news blogs. I choose those words deliberately because it’s known in the industry as the place to go to get your story out without serious blowback. And this doesn’t apply just to FBN or FNC, but MSNBC, CNN, and HLN as well. I reject a bunch of stuff that gets sent my way because it doesn’t fit with in what I want ICN 2.0 to be about. When I was doing ICN 1.0, things were of course different and you’d see a lot of stuff like what you see on TVN. But I realized I was posting fluff that basically amounted to free advertising so when I took that break and then came back I decided I was going to avoid that stuff this time around. But even going back to the days when Stelter ran the blog you would still see the types of articles that Olbermann complains about. So this is hardly anything new or anything that falls under the sole discretion of Krakauer.
I do dissagree with Olbermann that viewership levels should dictate coverage. Information is information. If someone writes an article on Bloomberg TV, which in many circles is considered even less of a player than FBN, and it’s newsworthy it should be posted. Let the reader decide if it’s worth their time. There is a difference though between posting newsworthy articles and posting about some guest appearance on a network or posting that some personality was an exclusive guest, after some other network had the same guest the day before.
I don’t know where Olbermann gets that 15,000 viewer number. The minimum subscriber level for Nielsen rating is 45 million, not 15,000. FBN may indeed be under 15,000 viewers, though there’s no way to know since that info isn’t publicly available, but it’s not the sole gating item to FBN getting rated.
Do I think Krakauer is in FNC/FBN’s pocket? Of course not. But then I once heard years ago from a very reliable source that Olbermann believed that right wing entities were paying people to comment on ICN. So maybe I’m compromised too.

Well, I find it strange that this Stewart-Cramer interview was the talk of the internet and cable news, except for MSNBC, which virtually ignored it. There is certainly some circumstantial evidence to suggest the story is true.
Later on Olby says, is essence, that he ignored this story because everyone else is paying attention to it. I find that hard to believe.
March 14, 2009 at 8:00 am
It is, well, ironic reading a message by an ostensibly objective and professional newshost/news anchor posted on a liberal partisan website complaining about the absence (as he sees it) of standards of another person.
Yes, it’s much more than ironic but I’ll leave it there as a sort of “sidebar” observation.
March 14, 2009 at 8:05 am
Why on ICN?
Hmm interesting comment though. Guess nothing much else is going on?
March 14, 2009 at 8:25 am
While I think Olbermann should have commented about it, he is right everyone else from CNN to Fixed News was showing it. I cannot wait because soon Stewart will start back on Fox News, which to me is much more fun to watch.
I am sure Johnny Dollar and his little trolls will make a deal of this since they have this obsession with Olbermann.
Hey Johnny why don’t you change the name of your site to “We Like O’Reilly Because He Likes Rapists”
March 14, 2009 at 8:38 am
^Douchebaggery of the highest order.
March 14, 2009 at 9:06 am
KO can cry about SteveK (whoever that is) all he wants, it doesn’t change the fact that MSNBC conspicuously avoided what everyone else considered a significant news story yesterday. And please, it was the kind of story Countdown would cover. It’s obvious NBC instructed its news division not to talk about its business division getting its arse handed it to it. I like KO but he should have left this one alone. Me thinks he was frustrated by being muzzled and took it out on TVN.
March 14, 2009 at 9:14 am
Have you ever noticed most of what TVN posts can be read a day or two earlier on this blog? I rarely go there anymore because its really redundant. Oh, and their comment section is infested with hardcore loons from both sides.
March 14, 2009 at 9:22 am
Agreed on both, Terance. I don’t visit much, either. The comments section is everything that is toxic about comments sections on the internet. Sometimes I regret all the interactivity we have, especially now that it bleeds into on air coverage. Every time I hear Cooper or Shuster say “send us your comments” I think, um , please don’t.

Red and Patrick, you’re both pretty good at this douchebaggery thing.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Dreaded Patsy, why don’t you trot back to your kennel and let the grownups talk in peace.
Regards,
Miss POOP
March 14, 2009 at 10:32 am
And Grammie, why don’t you drag yourself back to the old folks home and back to Crapper 2 so you can talk to people who actually understand what you say.
March 14, 2009 at 11:11 am
Sorry, Patsy, but being so old and frail I don’t have the energy left to drag myself back to the warm and welcome J$P.
So, I guess that means I’ll have to hang around here and try, its such a tall order I know, to keep you honest.

Miss POOP

March 14, 2009 at 11:46 am
The warm and welcome Crapper 2, wow, you mean the I like to kiss Mark Koldys bunghole site. Why don’t you drag some of them over to the kennel to debate us, especially that little girl Ashley, and see if you can keep up.

Anytime, I visit TVNewser, the right wing comments outnumber the left wing comments on a ratio of 10 to 1.
So what else is new? The far right always swarm media blogs to defend Fox News. Thankfully, the ratings of talk radio and Fox News is the only victory these people can talk about these days.
March 14, 2009 at 12:05 pm
Temper, temper temper, dear Patsy.
Being filled with what spills out of you sometimes just can’t be good for you and those around you.
Come on, give us a smile and a hug. Your lower lip hanging down to the ground like that isn’t attractive and you wouldn’t want your face to freeze that way, would you?

Can Miss Poop and Patrick take their witty repartee back to TVN where they’ll feel more at home?

And conservatives like you a putting a drain on our economy by getting arrested all the time and crowding the courts just so you can get your daily kiddie porn fix.
As for you Scrammie. Who won the election? Who is president?
Why did McLame lose? Why are you such a senile old bag? Just asking

One hopes that he’ll be removed by the adults running this site.
March 14, 2009 at 1:31 pm
Blog rules at this site:
“Treat fellow commenters with respect – We all know that there’s an ideological undercurrent that permeates how people watch cable news. But not everyone agrees on what we see on cable news means. Treat other points of view with respect. Flame wars will get deleted. Picking fights will get deleted.”
It seems to me that “Patrick” needs to be removed ASAP.
March 14, 2009 at 1:42 pm
stevemg , I’ve known him at various sites under a long list of names and he has been a bad tempered throwing tantrums little twerp until he is banned.
Unfortunately what he considers his rapier repartee is always what he learned in the boy’s bathroom sometime around the fifth grade. He is really harmless. Harmless but definitely a little obnoxious twerp.
unclearthur Says:
I sympathize with you but one of this little twerp’s bad habit is to brag on other sites how he drove off commenters from this site. I’ve also found him in his righteousness bragging about trolling other sites and how he made their heads explode. I just don’t think he should have carte blanche.

Yes, I made the mistake of responding. I felt like I was back in junior high school for a moment.
Obviously individuals like this have little actual human interaction and the only contact they have is through the internet where they like to playact. Odd generation we’re raising.
March 14, 2009 at 2:03 pm
Steve,
If those blog rules were enforced, BigRed would have been banned long ago.
March 14, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Bottom line…if Stewart had worked over an anchor/analyst from FBN, he would have done a whole segment about it.
I didn’t expect MNSBC to have much to say about the Stewart-Cramer episode, given that Cramer is on their sister network and Cramer didn’t put up any sort of fight.
March 14, 2009 at 2:09 pm
Steve and Monica, that is the conunmdrum. (?) Give him free reign and he will slime the site with a fire hose.
Engage him and he slimes the site with a fire hose.
I’ll cease and desist on this thread b/c it is a valid complaint that one not be subjected to such.
March 14, 2009 at 2:14 pm
Agreed grammie, let’s start with BigRed and maybe the others will fall in line through the carrot and big stick process.
March 14, 2009 at 2:33 pm

My only regret is that there is not a blog rule for the content of the “Free For All”.

March 14, 2009 at 5:44 pm
Now that Patrick has been taken care of by Spud (thank you), can we please get back on topic. What I found the most interesting is that KO may actually believe that right wing posters are being paid to post on this site.
Come on now BigRed, L & J, Steve & any other right wing poster come out & admit that you’re being paid by a vast right wing conspiracy (sarcastic). I’m sure all of us would love to know the truth about your postings.
If KO truly believes this then he might want to consult a mental health professional. Either he’s extremely thin skinned or he has some psychological issue that probably should be addressed.
March 14, 2009 at 5:45 pm
Thats right little Mikec. Why don’t you come over to the kennel for a good debate and for you Big Head, stfu
March 14, 2009 at 5:49 pm
He was taken care of at one IP address and under one moniker. He’ll never be gone. So, you know what? I’ll feed him. I don’t need to come to Newshounds to “debate” when you’ve brought the “debate” here.

March 14, 2009 at 6:04 pm
Chip, I can never make my mind up about KO. Is he just coldly calculating every word and move or is he just hanging on by his finger nails to keep from plunging over the edge.
Its just my opinion but I don’t see how a rational person could believe much less publish such a patently dishonest accusation against TVN. His wild eyed fans confound me too. About a 1/3 of Kos Kiddies are spitting never darken my door step mad and the other 2/3 are pleading his case written in their own blood.

Spud, nice to finally meet you.

March 14, 2009 at 6:34 pm
Miss…you really posed a great question…what is driving KO? Need to succeed…fear of failure….need to be liked & wanted.
So many areas to analyze & really no method to determine what makes KO tick.
March 14, 2009 at 8:00 pm
I’ve been told it’s safe to come back.
I’ll get on topic: Keith has used posts from Steve Krakauer’s website, TVNewser, as sources for attacks on all things News Corp in WPitW. And now, suddenly, after TVNewser’s story about his network, Steve Krakauer is “entirely in Fox’s pocket.” Oy.
March 14, 2009 at 8:21 pm
Mike, there is no question that KO is loyal to one person and one person only, himself.
I think he let his refusal to confront anyone or anything that disagrees with him get him in hot water this time. Look what he actually did. In an effort to placate the Koz Kiddies he made the situation worse and in the process dumped on someone who has always given him a fair shake. How obtuse and stupid can he be?
March 15, 2009 at 11:04 am
KO is turning into Greta… and Greta jumped the shark about 6 months ago.
March 15, 2009 at 12:08 pm
KO is a mental case….which makes him awesome. If he ever gets “in recovery”, I’ll quit watching.
Hey, who you calling adults?
March 15, 2009 at 1:39 pm
Joe…lol. I think you’re the first liberal to ever admit that KO is a mental case. If the Daily Kos folks find out where you live they might want to pay you a visit…just kidding.
Thanks for your honest assessment of KO.
March 15, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Olbermann found his voice when he did his first special comment. He was speaking out at a time when Donald Rumsfeld had accused those who were still questioning the logic of going into Iraq as “confused,” and Olbermann rightly let him have it. Over time, however, Olbermann’s hatred of all things Bush became somewhat irrational, he started using websites as sources and over time he became what he used to scold Fox News for – a partisan hack who goes by the philosophy that there is no objective truth, just interpretation.
To me he has jumped the shark many times, but I can’t see him as anything but a goofball after he responded to Ann Coulter’s charges that he attended a lower division of Cornell by bringing his 30 year old diploma in and showing it on air.
March 15, 2009 at 3:33 pm
“Here’s my receipt.” Classic. He truly makes Jon Stewart look like a giant of journalism, especially after the Cramer interview.
March 15, 2009 at 8:06 pm
Let’s hope no one makes any disparaging remarks about any other shortcomings that he might have.
I shudder to think of him whipping something other than his diploma out and slapping it on the table to prove his critics wrong. I’m not sure my poor hear could take that.

March 19, 2009 at 10:33 pm
Keith is an ego maniac, and damn, is he ever butt-hurt about getting bitch slapped at the Daily Kos by his fans (a lot of them now former fans) over his lame excuses as to why he didn’t cover Stewart bitch slapping Cramer and CNBC.
He had a special comment tonight, and you wouldn’t even have known it. There were no promos, and he didn’t go to D/K to hype it an hour or so before air like he usually does.
And tonight? Jon Stewart and the Daily Show scoop Keith and Countdown again! It WAS Senator Chris Dodd after all who stripped the language from the stimulus bill that would have prohibited those AIG bonuses. All the lefty blogs, including the Daily Kos were defending Dodd and villifying Harry Reid for trying to “throw Dodd under the bus”. And they were all wrong. Keith and Rachel had best mention this tomorrow, since they both missed it tonight.
