Examining Meet the Press…

Newsday’s Verne Gay in effect detonates a bomb in 30 Rock by asking tough questions of Meet the Press that NBC probably would prefer not be asked…(via Chickaboomer)

The problem? Actually, problems. The new moderator often seems like he’s wearing a suit made for someone else – Russert – and as a result has yet to clearly establish why he got this gig instead of anyone else in the conga line of potential successors. Gregory is terrifically polished, well-informed, a good listener and has the talking points of both sides down cold. But he also seems more intent on covering the waterfront than digging for news, or in pushing the talking heads off their talking points. Recent interviews with Sens. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) felt like a waterfront that went on for miles – an endless vista of chatter and spin. His exclusive interview with Defense Secretary Robert Gates was thoughtful and probing, but not particularly memorable.

the two worst news host is Campbell Brown & David Gregory. Neither of them will be in their current positions by the end of the year. Brown should have stayed at NBC and Gregory doesnt have the “presence” needed to host MTP.

  4. I still miss Russert

I think Gregory still has time to grow into the job. I doubt that Russert was running on all cylinders a few months after taking the show over. Nobody should expect Gregory to be a carbon-copy of Tim Russert – Gregory is his own guy.
That said, he did inherit a show that had become a sort of rite-of-passage for all politicians and if the show is slipping by the end of this year Gregory’s job will probably be in jeopardy.

Wrong on both counts. NBC has too much invested in Gregory to make a move that quick. Same goes for CNN…

  7. It would be impossible for anybody to pick up from Russert. I’m not a big Gregory fan, but he’s doing as good a job as anybody could, and better than many at NBC would. The show was there long before Russert was. Gregory will eventually make it his own. You have to give him credit for treating it with respect, as opposed to barging in and saying, “My turn.”

Spud, I’m in agreement with you regarding Gregory & MTP. However, with Campbell Brown going on maternity leave & with CNN’s prime time ratings being down, CNN management might view this as an opportunity to make some changes to their evening lineup.
