UPS to Stop Factor Advertising?
I don’t like bully/pressure groups in general as they tend to be a waste of time, plus I don’t like mob/minority rule. But occasionally they do succeed. Case in point: Think Progress managing to apparently get UPS to drop advertising for The O’Reilly Factor over its ambush interviewing…
Today UPS announced it will stop advertising on O’Reilly’s show. Here is the statement UPS emailed out just moments ago:
Thank you for sending an e-mail expressing concern about UPS advertising during the Bill O’Reilly show on FOX News. We do consider such comments as we review ad placement decisions which involve a variety of news, entertainment and sports programming. At this time, we have no plans to continue advertising during this show.
Here’s a graphic of the email statement we received:
Thank you UPS! We need more corporate sponsors of O’Reilly to follow UPS’s lead. Let’s keep up the pressure. Please sign onto our campaign and tell your friends to do so as well:
Obvious question: Did Think Progress’ pressure really get UPS to stop advertising? Or had UPS advertising deal with The Factor already run its course, which means that Think Progress really didn’t accomplish anything?
March 27, 2009 at 1:47 pm
Hey! FNC can always show “direct buy ads” to fill the vacancy, eh?
March 27, 2009 at 1:51 pm
I highly doubt the #1 rated show on cable will have any problems finding sponsors.
March 27, 2009 at 2:00 pm
UPS’s statement implies acquiescence to Think Progress’s request. I’m surprised this worked. Something tells me somebody at the company saw the video with Turkel. There was something about how slight and young she is that made this particular ambush a lot more sinister than usual.
March 27, 2009 at 2:03 pm
“Obvious question: Did Think Progress’ pressure really get UPS to stop advertising?”
I’m sure O’Reilly or his fill-in will let us know tonight. Jeez, I might have to actually watch the train wreck.
March 27, 2009 at 2:50 pm
The UPS email implies nothing other than, “At this time, we (UPS) have no plans to continue advertising during this show.”
“Something tells me somebody at the company saw the video with Turkel.”
With 425,000 employees (355,000 U.S.; 70,000 International) that’s a safe bet.
March 27, 2009 at 2:55 pm
To answer your obvious question, Spud, UPS had already dropped sponsorship. No matter. Vendettamann will trumpet this “victory” tonight.
March 27, 2009 at 3:07 pm
This is just a guess on my part. Honestly, I don’t want to think that TP (and by extension, Keith Olbermann) accomplished the first phase of their mission.
March 27, 2009 at 3:14 pm
Maybe I’m missing something. This post says “Today UPS announced it will stop advertising on O’Reilly’s show”, then shows the text of an e-mail stating that UPS monitors the content of shows they sponsor and says they have no plans to continue advertising on The Factor at this time.
So there is either a direct line through Think Progress contacting them to them stating they monitor content to them stating they won’t continue the advertising, or there isn’t. If the contract was abandoned before this incident and had nothing to do with it, why would they leave the issue open to interpretation?
March 27, 2009 at 3:17 pm
I can’t parse the UPS statement definitively. It’s vague enough to be interpreted either way. Which is why I posited that question at the end of the blog post.
March 27, 2009 at 3:29 pm
I’m reluctant to answer “why” questions because not everyone has the ability to think critically without perceiving through the lens of prejudice.
That usually results in a protracted argument between one who sees the obvious and one who refuses to see anything that doesn’t explain their pre-judgment.
March 27, 2009 at 3:32 pm
Tough day for you jazz man,
First the Doctor who O’Reilly declared jihad on is acquitted, and now this news regarding UPS.
Glad I had a small part in that success.
March 27, 2009 at 3:38 pm
So when liberals reporters from the MSM do ambush journalism, it’s not harrassment? People on the far left need to stop whinning about the Turkel video. She got exposed by getting her facts from discredited left wing websites and the liberals are doing damage control by silencing opposing views.
March 27, 2009 at 3:43 pm
CHElmonica, He may be acquited but he faces a new complaint before the State Board of Healing Arts, which could revoke, suspend or limit his medical license, or fine him.
March 27, 2009 at 3:51 pm
Zone, who said ambushes are OK if liberals do it? Are you OK with Turkel’s ambush? Instead of accusing us of supporting it when it happens to conservatives – a topic that hasn’t even come up – why don’t you just stick to your story. You disagree with her so you think it was cool.
March 27, 2009 at 3:54 pm
How about the frakkin appeal too dip? Bottom line is he won’t be in jail as the right wing nuts wanted.
P.S.
Democratic America knows who the real criminals are.
March 27, 2009 at 4:56 pm
It’s a truly sad and sick world when we have people cheering for someone who performs late term abortions.
March 27, 2009 at 5:16 pm
If she’s not too young to send a hack piece to the masses, she’s not too young to have someone question her on it. You better be able to back up your position. The best part about the “ambushes” are they show both sides, the questions and the answers. They aren’t sliced to only show her answers. it’s pretty raw footage. We can all decide if it’s apprpriate or not. He wasn’t disrepectful, or mean, but pressing. If you’re gonna play with the big boys… you gotta be ready to get a bit dirty!!!
And forget UPS.. use FedEx!!!!
March 27, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Buy FedEX stock!
March 27, 2009 at 5:26 pm
I’ll break the ice then and mention ambush journalism.
Sixty minutes has been using none too gentle ambushes for decades and I don’t remember any concerted campaign against them.
Michael Moore was lionized by the same left that is demonizing BOR for his ambush style documentary films.
Selective outrage is worse than useless. It demonstrates a strong ethical lapse.
March 27, 2009 at 5:38 pm
Yes Joeremi, You damn right I’m ok with the Turkel ambush. She got exposed and the far left are doing their best for damage control. Not one of you heard the full radio program and read the unedited transcript! When Watters confronted her, she was backpedaling because she got snippets of this and that from left wing websites…
March 27, 2009 at 5:43 pm
CHElmonica says, I hate Fox News!.. Blah..Blah..Blah.. I hate opposing views! Blah…blah..blah. Free Speech only applies to Liberals, not conseratives or Libertarians! Blah..blah..blah.. FASCISTS! Blah..blah..blah.. I hate Fox News… Blah…blah..blah MURDERS! Blah..Blah..Blah.. WAR CRIMINALS! Blah..blah..blah. JOSEPH STALIN IS A PATRIOT! Blah..Blah..Blah
And CHElmonica, America knows the real criminals are. The ones who perform late term abortion for not apparent reason like a bad headache. Enjoy 3 years of 9 months of Obama when the American people throw his butt out of office for being another Jimmy Carter and adding another $10 Trillion debt to our great grandchildren…
March 27, 2009 at 5:44 pm
Of course Misspoupou, CHElmonica and the others on here fine that perfectly fine because it fits their liberal ideology. If a conserative does it, CHElmonica would be screaming “FASCISTS”!
March 27, 2009 at 5:48 pm
misspoupou, OUTSTANDING points. For which they have no rebuttal.
March 27, 2009 at 6:32 pm
Special Report had the UPS advertising tonight.
Maybe they made a mistake or were confused and canceled their advertising on MSNBC. I have not seen any UPS ads over there. Smile
March 27, 2009 at 6:41 pm
I think KO did something with it tonight, but I’ll have to wait until Monday’s transcript.
If he did I would think he would embarrass himself b/c that would be so childishly spiteful. Oh well I don’t think anyone has ever accused KO of being mature.

Some idiot stalked that girl for 2 hours. It was wrong and O’Reilly, who is often entertaining and sometimes right, has better things to do.
March 28, 2009 at 7:34 am
doesnt ups advertise on beck and hannity too?
March 28, 2009 at 8:47 am
The term “stalking” used for a decades old time honored tradition of the ambush interview is a bit much, don’t you think? Stalking is the term we use for a heinous felony in these times. Sixty Minutes was the last word in ambush interviews.
So, do you have the same reaction to sixty minutes jumping out to corner a chop shop owner they just targeted, or anyone else in their cross hairs, as you do to the Watters/Terkel (?) interview on a public street?
If not, why not?
Dittos for a local on air talent doing consumer and citizen safety ambush interviews
Dittos for any political reporter popping up unexpectedly in a politicians face with tough embarrassing questions?
Miss Terkel (?) based on her answers seemed clueless about a subject she had just weeks earlier felt informed enough on to rally the public to her way of thinking. Yet she at first dissembled to hide her ignorance of the subject matter by first claiming she hadn’t highlighted Mel Gibson. True enough, except totally misleading, or prevaricating or possibly lying b/c it was obvious she had not any idea of what happened beyond a few carefully cherry picked quotes.

Perfect example of the triple threat of anad hominem attack, a false accusation based upon a false definition and the stating “facts not in evidence” as if saying it makes it true in just 8 words:
“Some idiot stalked that girl for 2 hours.”
Well done, joey!

That idiot followed her for 2 hours. That’s stalking. You conservative apologists astonish me.
March 28, 2009 at 5:30 pm
Joe, I have made several comments outlining why I don’t consider this anything other than an ambush interview.
You have not addressed one of them but persist as if your accusation is the same as THE TRUTH.
I’m going to run some errands and I hope you see this and respond.
March 28, 2009 at 5:35 pm
It’s the subject that won’t die. Six months from now….
March 28, 2009 at 7:56 pm
That idiot followed her for 2 hours. That’s stalking.
That idiot: ad hominem attack
followed her for two hours: facts not in evidence, hearsay, assumption
That’s stalking: false accusation based on a false definition based on hearsay, facts not in evidence
You conservative apologists astonish me.
TRUTH means never having to say you’re sorry.
Honesty and accuracy are values that transcend political ideology.

MissP, is the the only topic you care about? The blogger was at her house, then drove two hours to a vacation spot. Her itinerary wasn’t posted anywhere. The only way that producer could have known she was there was to follow her from the only location he could have predicted she would be at, her home. A guy following a college-age girl for two hours is a stalker.
All ambush interviews are lazy journalism and stupid. This one was REALLY stupid. Talk to ya in six months…
