What’s Hot/What’s Not: 05/17/09
What’s Hot:
The case of the missing Olbermann – City File ran wild with a story about Keith Olbermann taking time off from Countdown over a booking war with the Rachel Maddow show. Olbermann fired back hard at City File (and Gawker) by saying that his time off had to do with the passing of his mother.
Nancy Pelosi – Pelosi made herself topic 1 the latter half of the week as she escalated her (losing) war against the CIA.
Tucker Carlson – Carlson joins FNC and in the process joins an exclusive club: talents who have worked at all three cable news channels.
What’s Not:
Is it Live or is it Memorex? – MSNBC’s decision to run ancient taped programming instead of carrying Barack Obama’s Notre Dame address was a bad call all around. The network spent a lot of time covering the run up to the address but when it came time to cover the address the network suddenly grew weak knees.

Not: Definitely City File. Sometimes people take a day off and it’s none of our d@mn business why. Olbermann’s an @ss, but he wasn’t hatched from an egg. Apologize, and stfu. (City File, that is.)

And re: MSNBC not carrying 0bama’s ND speech live.
Similar stuff happens all the time on cable news. So many times, cable outlets bring in the pundits to talk about an issue, but then cut out of the actual event so that they can bring the pundits back on to analyze, even while the story continues to unfold!
I’m trying to remember specifics, but I believe this has happened with a lot of those business stories (when CEOs were being prosecuted for malfeasance), during war updates (when Pentagon officials would be briefing the media), and various other stories, including court proceedings. It is infuriating – I’d rather see the actual story than to hear someone analyze the thing!
But here is MSNBC, totally ignoring the actual event, but just talking about it before or after.
BTW, very distubing about 0 talking at ND. I’m not blaming him here, believe it or not. But for a Catholic university to invite a speaker who is so against the teachings of its faith is just unbelievable.

And therein, ladies & gentlemen, is why this kinda-lefty has a secret crush on that right wing wacko, Laural. Preach it, sister!
Missy, if it was someone other than the President of the United States, I would agree. But it’s the President. Any college should welcome any Commander In Chief IMO.

I agree with missy’s sentiments, but the man is the President. I hate agreeing with joe.
I don’t see anything wrong with those who staged peaceful and respectful protests of his appearance at ND, either. Any president gets plenty of that, and should.
NOT: While certainly a news story that should be reported, why all the bloviating on cable news about the president accepting the invitation to speak at ND and the inevitable groups who showed up to protest against him speaking at a Catholic University? I just think they over-hyped the controversy.
HOT: Almost live broadcasts on cable news of Hubble getting rebuilt. Can’t get enough of that stuff.

Not: Naional pro-life figures bigfooting (?) what is otherwise a legitimate protest @ Notre Dame.
Terry Schiavo flashbacks. When Randall Terry shows up, part of my soul dies. His divorce (and other personal problems) was the best thing to happen to the pro-life movement.
