O’Reilly vs. Perlstein…
Newsweek’s Rick Perlstein responds to Bill O’Reilly over an article Perlstein wrote…
Were I a conservative, and a fan of Sarah Palin, and a viewer of Bill O’Reilly—but not a particularly conscientious reader of Newsweek—I would have been mad at me, too.
What had I written, and what had Newsweek attempted to get away with? Here’s how one friendly blogger summarized “Beyond the Palin”: “Perlstein’s entire article is … a chronicle of the division within Republican ranks between the party’s elites … and its far more strident base.” Any contempt present in the piece, he pointed out, came not in my own voice but those of the elite Republicans I quoted, who “treat part of the base with a certain amount of disdain, courting them with a wink and a nod when necessary, dissociating from them … when they fail to deliver the electoral goods…. Indeed, Perlstein’s article is not so much a liberal elitist sneer at the lumpen proletariat in fly-over country as much as it is a careful examination of conservative elites toward those they regard as such.”In truth the article was a little more than that. I also quoted author and former Bush speechwriter David Frum asking worriedly, “What’s happening to Fox News?”, and suggested that, in an era of occasional violence from the right-wing fringe, all responsible conservatives should all be asking that question. My friend David Neiwert, a Seattle-based journalist and author of the recent book The Eliminationists: How Hate Talk Radicalized the American Right, explained to me the problem thus: “I’m hearing now, from supposedly mainstream conservative pundits”—he singled out Fox’s Glenn Beck, who has been entertaining the notion that Obama might not be a natural-born American citizen—”the kind of extreme rhetorical appeals that I used to hear from militia movement leaders in the early 1990s, talk about how the evil liberal president literally intends to destroy our country.”

This Perlstein sounds like a complete whack-job. Number one, it’s the oldest left-wing media trick in the book to write a hatchet piece on a particular conservative then defend it by saying, “no, that’s not from me, that’s what I hear from OTHER conservative types”. Blah, blah, blah.
Second, they are using the number one tool of the left, a tool which has been employed effectively since the election of Barack Obama: the pre-emptive strike. If you criticize The One, you are either racist, treasonous or now a militant revolutionary. I watch Beck from time to time and have never heard him embrace the birth certificate thing. BTW, where were these folks when Beck railed on the Bush admin day after day on his radio show?
Newsweek is a radical fringe entertainment rag, nothing more, nothing less. For the newsweek guy to quote a perspective on conservatives using a radical leftist who authored some moronic book (that nobody has heard of) that rails against talk radio is typical of the new Newsweek…or the Newsweek of the last 15 or so years.

The article was ABOUT Palin dividing the GOP, NOT about Palin. And the author quotes conservatives (by name). He made his point. Easy to see what side of the conservative divide YOU’re on.
I watch Beck from time to time and have never heard him embrace the birth certificate thing.
From Beck’s own website, July ’08: Obama birth certificate ‘horrible forgery’ – http://www.glennbeck.com/content/articles/article/198/12701/
It’s a quote and a link to another article, but it is presented without comment.

The quote from David Neiwert:
“I’m hearing now, from supposedly mainstream conservative pundits the kind of extreme rhetorical appeals that I used to hear from militia movement leaders in the early 1990s, talk about how the evil liberal president literally intends to destroy our country.”
Glenn Beck in one of his more lunatic rants, in which he pretends to be preparing to set a guy on fire, addressing Obama: “If Your Agenda is to Destroy America—Why Don’t You Just Set Us on Fire Right Now?”
Glenn Beck on changing the tax deduction for charitable contributions: “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a president or a government do anything that I thought was out-and-out evil. I mean, we’ve gotten close. I think rendition is pretty darned evil. But this is enslaving, what our president has proposed and what is in this new bill. Changes in the tax deductions for charitable giving!”
Yeah, changing the tax code is EXACTLY like slavery. I can see how a white guy might think that.
Glenn Beck asks “Pastor” John Hagee: “There are people — they say this about Bill Clinton — he might be the Antichrist. Odds that Barack Obama is the Antichrist?”
But hey, he’s just ASKING if Obama’s the antichrist, he’s not SAYING… Biiiiiig difference. [forestalling Red, *guffaw*]
And that’s just a quick google search on Beck. I wonder what I’d find if I googled Hannity, or Limbaugh?
July 22, 2009 at 8:11 am
And that’s relevant… how?
July 22, 2009 at 8:19 am
lonestar, very well stated!
It looks as if the author had a recipe (and a new dictionary, as well!) when he sat down and wrote this thing, utilizing all the tactics you mentioned. It was very formulaic, and obviously so!
Bottom line, anyone who disagrees w/0bama is a rube, hick, and of course, a “hater”! And Fox News, the only media outlet consistently challenging his programs, is the evil villian here. Fine. Whatever. But thank God they’re telling us what’s going on, as our country gravitates toward socialism, and as it continues to take over the automotive, banking and now healthcare sectors, plummetting our country into TRILLIONS of dollars of debt.
Even the left is beginning to bail on this very radical POTUS! They have to – when Congress goes home next year to try to get re-elected, they will have to account to their constituents as to how they voted on this massive government takeover of our entire economy.
July 22, 2009 at 8:22 am
Clearly the entire point of the article was lost on not only Lonestar, but Missy as well.
July 22, 2009 at 8:56 am

His PROGRAMS? yeah. Try ‘challenging his very humanity’. (See: Glenn Beck – Is Obama the AntiChrist?)
July 22, 2009 at 9:21 am
“(See: Glenn Beck – Is Obama the AntiChrist?)”
See that the video you (allegedly) quoted isn’t from FOX News… it’s from when Beck was on HLN/CNN.
Close… but no cigar.
Now, of course, in watching the video it’s obvious Beck was joking with Hagee… mocking people who think that Obama is the anti-Christ… but again, never let the facts get in the way of a good smear.
July 22, 2009 at 9:38 am
The smartest thing CNN ever did was get rid of Beck. Now if they’d get rid of that other nutcase, Dobbs.
July 22, 2009 at 9:39 am
Oh suck it up, righties. The article was about the divisions and distractions in the GOP right now…the same kind of stuff that happens to any political party that loses their incumbent and the last election at the same time. A similar piece could have been written about the Dems in 2001. I swear, some people will have a fit over ANYTHING. I’m sure Red will be a long soon to call it “disgraceful, disgusting and shameful.” And, of course, Perlstein is a douchebag.
July 22, 2009 at 9:50 am
Don’t forget ‘vile’. And scurrilous!
July 22, 2009 at 9:51 am
Joe & Art…I have no problem with the article however it’d be nice if NewsWeek would have properly identified the writer as not a correspondent for their publication but as a left wing blog writer.
It’d be like Bill Kristol or Fred Barnes writing about MSNBC or KO without proper identification.
July 22, 2009 at 9:57 am
Chips, I’d be more inclined to agree with you if the original article was ABOUT Fox, but it’s not – it’s about ‘conservatives’. In the quoted article, he’s addressing O’Reilly, who picked the fight in the first place.
Spud left off the beginning of the (response) article, which is really the best part:
July 22, 2009 at 10:04 am
Chips, Newsweek has been transformed into a largely anaytical newsmagazine recently. They decided to stop competing in a losing battle with cable news and the internet for straight news reporting.
That said, I have a tough time seeing the left-wing bias here. The stuff Perlstein reported on isn’t much of a secret. The GOP is divided over whether to lean further right or moderate, and the right-wing call to arms about “socialism”, “the destruction of our country” and “Obama is an African” has been loud and consistent since Jan. 20. The latter DOES remind me of the militia movement of the ’90s and anybody who doesn’t see a similarity isn’t trying very hard.

I think it would be instructive if Palin went third-party; would be very interested to see both who went with her and how her own message would evolve. I understand she’s flirting with birther-ism now?
The latter DOES remind me of the militia movement of the ’90s and anybody who doesn’t see a similarity isn’t trying very hard.
Cue the usual suspects to come out shouting that you’re a hater…
three… two… one…
July 22, 2009 at 10:32 am
I TOLD you…I love everybody!
July 22, 2009 at 10:36 am
It would be interesting to see Sarah Palin run as a third party candidate…she kinda reminds me of a cross between Ross Perot (I’m all ears) & John Anderson. Before everyone starts Googleing…John Anderson was a 3rd party candidate for the White House in 1980.
Unlike Perot, he didn’t really have a big impact on the election however he did force many people to choose between Carter & Reagan.
At this point in my life, I’m pretty disillusioned with both political parties & I’d really like to see a strong 3rd party launch.
July 22, 2009 at 10:40 am

Joe & Art…I do agree that the piece had very little to do with Fox News however, I still like to have "outside" authors identified as to their background(s) especially if they are not "regularly" employed by the publication.
July 22, 2009 at 10:42 am
Let’s see a true socialist 3rd party candidate…Dennis Kucinich. He would make cries of Obama being a left wing wacko socialist look ridiculous. Plus…Mrs. Kucinich!
July 22, 2009 at 12:13 pm
Yeah, what do you think Mrs. Kucinich sees in Dennis the Martian?
Oh, and thanks for slamming me when I’m haven’t even posted. I appreciate the love from you & art.
July 22, 2009 at 12:24 pm
Oh, and thanks for slamming me when i haven’t even posted.
Preemptive strike my brotha. I learned it from the last administration.

Joe…roflmao. Dennis would certainly make the White House interesting. I’m not certain our country could survive with him in the White House (I have a feeling that most of our treasured nation’s secrets would be released). Dennis does not have the tempermant for the position. During his tenure as mayor of Cleveland he would often get into verbal bouts with reporters, the City Council, & with city residents. In addition he fired his police chief on live television during the 6pm news. I could just imagine Dennis firing the VP during the State of the Union address.
In addition, the city went bankrupt during his administration (no small accomplishment for a city that had the river catch fire…Google Cuyahoga River Fire & you’ll get a good laugh).
Yes, Dennis definitely upgraded both in height & in stature with his current wife (he’s only 5’4 & she’s gotta be 5’9-5’10). The White House state dinners would certainly be interesting since he is a strict vegan.
Joe, you’re always good for a good laugh & I appreciate the Dennis for President statement.
July 22, 2009 at 12:54 pm
Well played, Joe. Well played.
Are you insinuating that I’m stockpiling WMD-like comments?
July 22, 2009 at 12:54 pm
I have a soft spot for our little UFO believer. I’m 5′-6″ and my wife is a smokin’ 5′-8″ blonde. I get the same thing Dennis gets…”Um, how’d THAT happen?”
July 22, 2009 at 1:02 pm
Are you insinuating that I’m stockpiling WMD-like comments?
First reports had me a little worried, but a deeper look at the intelligence shows there’s nothing there.
July 22, 2009 at 1:29 pm
but a deeper look at the intelligence shows there’s nothing there.
Duuude. Layers! Well done.
July 22, 2009 at 1:31 pm

Joe, can you imagine Shirley McLaine has our ET Czar? Deidre Hall (strong Kucinich supporter) as our Arts Czar? Kate Mulgrew (Star Trek Voyager & married to a Cuyahoga County commissioner as Defense Secretary)???
The possibilities are endless…Warren Beatty as __________ (fill in the blank)
July 22, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Duuude. Layers! Well done.
Appreciate the compliment, bit I have no idea what “layers” means.
July 22, 2009 at 1:48 pm
I meant your remark could be taken several ways, the surface meaning (a play on the missing WMD) or as referring to RED’s intelligence. Apparently unintentional, but I LOL-ed.
July 22, 2009 at 1:52 pm
Oh it was intentional. Glad you appreciated it. I thought “layers” might be some urban slang I wasn’t hip to.
July 22, 2009 at 1:53 pm
oh, heh – no, just contextual analysis of your many-layered post. Kudos.
July 22, 2009 at 1:56 pm
Hmmm, there’s actually another layer there I didn’t see. I’m questioning Red’s ability to provide powerful comments, not his actual intelligence. That’s not an impression I want to leave. I’m happy to disagree with Red and question his tactics, but I’m not going so far as to call him stupid.
I’ll call a spade a spade when I see one, i.e. Sarah Palin is an idiot, but I don’t thik Red is an idiot. I’m just having a little fun with him.
July 22, 2009 at 2:01 pm
I agree with you Joe. I don’t think I’m an idiot either…but I could be mistaken. It has happened once or twice before.
July 22, 2009 at 2:06 pm
But c’mon Red, give me some props. That was a killer comeback. I’m feelin’ GOOD today.
July 22, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Geez, I gave you props earlier.
Don’t break your arm patting yourself on the back.
Are you hitting the red wine again? Or did laural lend you her bong?
July 22, 2009 at 2:17 pm
Or did Laural lend you her bong?
Yeah right. That girl’s a total bogart.
July 22, 2009 at 2:27 pm
Bogart: An obnoxious and overbearing person
You know me too well.
July 22, 2009 at 4:15 pm
Come on Laural. Puff, puff, pass.
