  1. I’m no fan of Sarah Palin that’s for sure but Chris Matthew’s appalling smear of Palin as a “poster girl for racism” last night was almost as shameful as Glenn Beck’s earlier explicit smear of Obama as a racist. Yeah, Beck was worse but not by much.

The “black man vs. white woman” reduction and simultaneous extension (quite a feat even for the slobbering Matthews) as a sort of “dog whistle” for southern racists was risible.

Matthews has always been, for me, the “good liberal” vs. the Olbermann “bad liberal” but we can jettison that distinction after this performance.

    What a jerk.

  2. Steve, I caught the tail end of that and never quite understood it. Was he connecting Palin’s opposition to Obama as being a racial divide?

  3. Speaking of outrageous statements, is it good or bad that Rush’s inflammatory crap barely raised an eyebrow (even from me) today? This time he was yapping about Pelosi and Hitler and sw@stikas and N@zis. Is the GOP ever going to denounce this crackpot?

  4. Was he connecting Palin’s opposition to Obama as being a racial divide?

Yes, but more. The argument posed by Matthews (columnist Kathleen Parker was his agreeing guest) is that the old southern racist fear of black men and white women will be exploited by Palin through a series of “dog whistle” appeals to those who hold such views.

    Matthews argues:
Palin has attacked New York, Washington and Los Angeles. She goes after the government, after the media, after Hollywood. Anything that`s on the coast is evil to her. She`s an Alaskan who, I bet you any money, is going to spend most of her time down in the middle parts of the country, the rural white parts. She`s going to find those cul de sacs of whitedom, and exploit the hell out of them, right?

By exploit Matthews means playing upon these racist fears.

To be sure, that racist view is still here (I live just outside of Mobile, Alabama after moving here about 7 years ago from DC) and yes the Republicans have clearly played on those (and other) fears.

But there is nothing I’ve seen from Palin that she has a record of such racial fear mongering. It’s all speculation based on nothing in her record.

If she does it – clobber her. Until she does this is all smearing.

Is it possible? Sure. Although my own view has always been that she can simply not survive any national campaign.

  5. Parker did say: “Don’t get me wrong. I don’t think Sarah knows she’s fanning the flames of racism; it’s being done on a subconscious level”.

Hoo boy, amateur psychology at its worst.

I say Parker is a frigid women who envies Palin’s looks and husband and is sexually frustrated to such an extent that she must use her pen as a substitute sexual device to mitigate such feelings.

Yeah, I made that all up too.

  6. What a stupid thing to say. “Palin appeals to Southern whites, some Southern whites are racist, therefore Palin is playing on racist views.” That’s hugely unfair. The GOP is a predominantly white party. If you’re a Republican, there’s a good chance you’re going to have a large white audience. The larger the audience, the larger the odds of a few racists being in it. What does that have to do with Sarah Palin? Mathews really overstepped here.

  7. savefarris Says:

    joe,

who was it that brought up Nazis in the first place? It sure wasn’t Limbaugh. If someone calls your side Nazis, you’re not allowed to defend yourself?!?

  8. Steve, you really had me going with the Parker analysis. Well played.

  9. –pen as a substitute sexual device–

    Words….fail me.

  11. What a stupid thing to say. “Palin appeals to Southern whites, some Southern whites are racist, therefore Palin is playing on racist views.” That’s hugely unfair

    Good for you.

The GOP has clearly played on these fears, of course, for year. The old “Southern Strategy” of Nixon’s. To their shame.

But there is no evidence of Palin doing this. It’s all supposition about a very serious matter.

As I said, if she does run and does play on the fear, I’ll be first in line to condemn it.

Until then, let’s not make it up.

Speaking of outrageous statements, is it good or bad that Rush’s inflammatory crap barely raised an eyebrow (even from me) today? This time he was yapping about Pelosi and Hitler and sw@stikas and N@zis. Is the GOP ever going to denounce this crackpot?

Rush is an entertainer with 3 hours of radio to fill per day using only his words. Contrast that to Dem Rep. Brian Baird who said “What we’re seeing right now is close to Brown Shirt tactics” in reference to the protestors. Is the entire Dem party going to “denounce this crackpot”?

  13. Why bother accusing her of playing on unsubstantiated stuff? Her “he’s a socialist he’s a terrorist” rants were clear shouts of stupid fear idiocy, which I roundly criticized her for many times. I thought she was a jerk during the campaign, but that doesn’t give me or anybody else the right to, as she says, start makin’ stuff up.

  14. Her “he’s a socialist he’s a terrorist” rants were clear shouts of stupid fear idiocy, which I roundly criticized her for many times.

If Obama was an albino she would have made the same over-the-top attacks.

Why Matthews had to dumpster dive for this story is a mystery.

  15. LS, If all you’ve got is “Rush is an entertainer”, BS. Rush is a leading voice of the far Right that the base of the GOP genuflects to. And I don’t play “oh yeah, what about you”, especially when I don’t know what a “Brown Shirt” is, and am only vaguely aware of a Brian Baird.

Don’t bore me with insignificant members of a party I often disagree with when we’re discussing the leading voice of the conservative movement.

  16. lonestar77 Says:

“Don’t bore me with insignificant members of a party I often disagree with when we’re discussing the leading voice of the conservative movement.”

The only people I hear saying that Rush is a “leading voice” is the left. We heard this distraction over & over again from the left-wing media a month or two ago when Obama started slipping. I’ve still never heard a Republican say it. I don’t listen to Rush often but when I do, I find him ENTERTAINING. I don’t (and none of my conservative buddies) look at him as a leader. He’s an entertainer. I have no control over whether or not the left wishes to admit that or not.

I think it’s a little more important when a congressman calls protestors Nazi’s. I think it’s a little more important when Pelosi says the protestors are carrying swastikas.

  17. –Matthews –

Get the feeling he’s left behind with all this Olbermann-O’Reilly-Dobbs war-of-the-roses crap going on. All that’s left is the occasional blog-mention.Has anyone seen his ratings lately?

  18. Can you imagine Chris Mathews being the one guy you can’t hear?

  19. –Matthews–
Would’ve been unthinkable 5-10 years ago. Watched him on CNBC, back when that meant something.

  20. savefarris Says:

Joeremi, if Rush is a “leading voice”, what does that make Pelosi? Was it Rush or Pelosi who first used the S-word?

  21. Yep Laural, I remember when his CNBC show was called Politics.

SF, I don’t know what S-word means, nor what Nancy Pelosi has to do with the subject I brought up.

  22. What’s bizarre is that Matthews once (in fact several times, I think) guest subbed for Limbaugh on the latter’s radio show in the early 1990s.

I guess the “neocons” drove him back to the liberals.

  23. –subbed for Limbaugh–

I remember that. He wasn’t bad, either. The best substitute Rush had in those days was Bob Dornan, B-1 Bob. That man was a three-hour Freudian slip.

  24. bigred08 Says:

Jpe. you’ve got your facts totally wrong on the Pelosi/Rush thing.

SHE was the one accusing townhall protesters of carrying swastikas.

The proof is in the pudding. Watch the video for yourself.

    http://hotair.com/archives/2009/08/06/pelosi-beware-of-astroturfers-carrying-swastikas/

  25. missy5537 Says:

I was just about to SCREAM that Nancy Pelosi “started this”, but bigred beat me to it.

Nancy Pelosi CERTAINLY DID start this mess, stating that people opposed, or even questioning the proposed health care program, were “wearing swastikas”.

So Joe, are your far left sources making it sound as if Rush brought up the Nazis/swastikas, etc.? Because it was NOT HIM, it was the person third in line to the presidency!!!!!!

I still can’t believe how the left, who’ve been protesting, kicking and screaming about EVERYTING for years, now feel that questioning government’s actions is no longer lawful.

  26. missy5537 Says:

And now Sarah Palin is a racist? I hope she sues Matthews when she goes after that teacher in Alaska, who seems to be the origin of the false story of the Palins divorcing.

  27. Red, they WERE carrying swatiskas. Rush compared the Democratic Party to Hitler.

  28. And spare me the technicality. Jagged double SSs are an obvious variation on the swastika. Rush and his dittohead goons are drawing a line from Obama to socialism to Hitler, which is kinda funny considering the President is black.

  29. Missy, I hope Sarah is smart enough to leave teacher/blogger alone. I don’t know what her weakness is for this stuff, but she needs to realize anonymous bloggers should remain just that, anonymous. If I wanted to start a left wing blog and get some attention, the first thing I would do is stir up some crap about Palin, hoping she comes after me.

There’s enough Perez Hiltons in the world, and by that I mean…why do I know his name?

  30. bigred08 Says:

Pelosi’s implication is that the townhall protesters are Nazi sympathizers. That’s what your liberal friends want the rest of the world to believe.

  31. bigred08 Says:

Pelosi’s implication is that the townhall protesters are Na<i sympathizers. That’s what your liberal friends want the rest of the world to believe.

  32. No Red, the implication is that the rabid righties are accusing the opposition of it. Nice turn around, though. That took talent.

  33. zonedaiatlas Says:

    ^
That’s what the far left been screaming for the last 8 years. I guess it’s not fascism when you guys do it.

  34. God bless ya Zone, you’ve finally hit the too-tired-to-respond nerve. Let’s do this again tomorrow. :)

  35. unclearthur Says:

Joe, the jagged S in pairs is the sign of the Nazi SS or state police. It’s now commonly used by skinheads and racist neo-nazis. Both swastikas and SS symbols have been deployed by the rent-a-mobs – there are photos.

  37. zonedaiatlas Says:

Sorry but Queen Botox B**ch needs to be back handed after smearing Americans who are exercising their right to free speech. You people on the far left sure do love to call people they disagree Nazis or Fascists! Joremi, where were you when on the far left called President Bush a Nazis, a Fascist, Hitler and burning his likeness in effigy? Where were you? Where was your outrage?

One more thing, where is your proof that Rush Limbaugh is the leading voice of the far right? What makes him far right? Because he believes in a smaller government, Capitalism, Free Market, Strong Defense and etc. That makes him a “far right”?

  38. Yeah Art, and it needs to stop. There’s no reason we can’t disagree on policy without throwing Hitler into the mix. Just as it’s unacceptable in discussions on ICN, it has no place in discussion elsewhere.

  39. Don’t you ever shut up, Dope-re-mi?
Talk about a waste of bandwidth!

  40. zonedaiatlas Says:

A video of Angry Racist Mob of SEIU Members attack a “Black” Conservative at a Town Hall protest of Obamacare..

So who is the angry mob of Racists now? Who’s astroturfing? And where is Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton at?

  41. Both swastikas and SS symbols have been deployed by the rent-a-mobs – there are photos.

    Now there’s a smear.

There’s no evidence of anyone with SS symbols being hired to protest.

You guys are really getting desperate now.

If there are pictures of pro-Obama/pro-healthcare reform wearing a Che t-shirt, I guess we can smear all of you guys as being pro-communist?

    Man….

  42. Don’t you ever shut up, Dope-re-mi?

Really, that’s all you’ve got? Thanks for your erudite contribution to the discussion, Mr. Just Discovered I Can Call People Names On The Internet.

  43. Zone, we’re talking about Rush Limbaugh NOW. Not only do you not know where I was or what I was thinking during the Bush administration, I don’t know where you were, either. Is this “oh yeah, but what are you” debate tactic taught in Conservative Defensive School?
