How much longer do we have to endure this? How can 24/7 coverage generate ratings? Are there really that many people who can sit there and watch this stuff all day?
August 29, 2009 at 7:20 am
I’m reminded of some small familiarity with what it’s like to grieve publicly. It’s not pleasant.
Gotta behave, everyone’s watching. No wonder they drink.

Dems pushing for “Obamacare” At Ted Kennedy’s funeral. Smells like another Paul Wellstone debacle…
August 29, 2009 at 8:19 am
Not to be partisan but it appears that liberals just can’t help themselves in politicizing these events. Or making political statements at them. Wellstone’s funeral, Correta Scot King’s funeral, this one….
I don’t recall similar actions during Reagan’s funeral or Nixon’s or even Buckley’s.
I could be wrong but I just don’t recall it.
Seems “out of place” but apparently the deceased at these events, according to families and friends, wouldn’t have minded.
And that’s the standard.

LS and Zone, do me a favor. Go outside and do something nice for somebody. Or pound sand. Whatever works.
August 29, 2009 at 9:16 am
I like that the graphics are being kept to a minimum.
August 29, 2009 at 10:06 am
Joe, I am doing those things but everyone once in a while I like to look at the news on my picture box.
August 29, 2009 at 10:16 am
Try the computer machine.
August 29, 2009 at 10:22 am
Yep it’s pretty much what I expected the Dems using Teddy’s funeral to push Obamacare and hiding behind his grandson to do it…just lovely.
August 29, 2009 at 10:26 am
Joe, don’t be so hard on everyone. It’s one thing that the man died, but to cash in on it (via asking for support for legislation he wanted) is super disingenuous.
And another thing. I am sick of these liberals being outrated now that people are protesting their policies. I can NEVER forget seeing Sen. Claire McCaskill whining about how “unpleasant” and/or “disrespectful” the people were at her town hall meeting. Could you imagine Pat Buchanan, Ann Coulter or Tom Tancredo stating such things? No; they couldn’t be heard because of the tremendous outburst of people shouting them down. Plus, they were too busy deflecting projectile pies being hurled their way.
And another ‘nother thing: the left has a habit of demonizing the right, accusing them of attacking their offices, carrying guns to meetings, using “Hitler/Nazi” rhetoric and signage. Yet upon further investigation, it’s always the left who is ultimately behind these antics, as they sabotage certain events to make it look like the right is to blame!
Sorry for the rant, now back on topic.
I’ve actually not seen any of the coverage today; I’m just going by what my pals have said, above. Kennedy is being honored sufficiently by the festivities today. Health care legislation should be passed not to memorialize him, but based on its merits and the will of and the impact on the American people. No other such criteria should be applied.

why do some anchors insist on talking non stop during continuing live coverage?
During Kennedy’s funeral mass on Fox broadcast network Jaime Colby couldn’t keep her mouth shut –while the other networks did what’s far more respectful — let the video speak for itself and not do play by play over a solemn service. The fox coverage on cable was far more professional with Shep at the anchor desk.
August 29, 2009 at 10:39 am
Missy, I don’t see the point in commenting on the coverage of a funeral if all you’re going to do is complain that it’s on, or complain about the speakers. Starlite addressed the coverage. Isn’t that what this thread is for?
August 29, 2009 at 10:54 am
By the way, Missy, as Corny mentioned, looks like they heard you about lower thirds.
August 29, 2009 at 12:05 pm
Yesterday on Rush Limbaugh’s show he said that if it rained during the funeral someone would claim it was tears from heaven for Teddy. Andrea Mitchell didn’t let him down. You are so right about Jaime Colby and her mouth – it seems like every anchor wanted to act like they were personally involved with this spectacle. Sorry folks, but I live in middle American where the Kennedy’s are respected, but not adored and worshipped like the diety.
August 29, 2009 at 12:54 pm
I assure you that people in ALL regions of the country cared for Sen. Kennedy, no, not all of the people given the right-wing hate shown here towards him but there are plenty of people who loved him and know that there were never again be a Senator who will be as revered or as remembered as Sen. Kennedy. No wonder the GOP is seething: jealousy.
August 29, 2009 at 1:16 pm
Asleep… thank you for keeping the streak alive. 100% jerky comments from you… every time, all the time.
I wonder if you’ve ever considered posting something constructive, without something nasty attached. I’m guessing no… perhaps that’s something you might want to look into for the future.
August 29, 2009 at 4:54 pm
As they often do for important stories, Fox had all it’s weekday regulars on for the coverage except Gretchen Carlson. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her work a Saturday. How does she get that deal?
August 29, 2009 at 6:54 pm
Having watched much of the all day Kennedy coverage I felt it was too much for ANY Senator. Will coverage be as extensive when Senator Byrd passes … or President Bush 41 … or President Carter?? I doubt it. Bill Clinton, maybe. Bush 43 will be lucky to get on the scroll at the bottom of the screen on CNN or MSNBC. This was a over-rated salute to Clan Kennedy – by all of the cable news channels … even Fox. I don’t think any left wingers can complain about the Fox coverage on Saturday. Fox was truly fair and balanced on Saturday.
August 29, 2009 at 7:21 pm
I agree, biz, that Fox covered it fair and appropriately. I don’t agree with the rest of what you said, though. All of the presidents will get even more wall-to-wall coverage and you can look back to President Ford’s funeral for that.
Yes the coverage was too much for any senator, but this wasn’t just about him being a senator… or even being the “liberal lion”, for that matter. Many of us weren’t yet born or were very young for the funerals of President Kennedy and Senator Robert Kennedy and so may not fully appreciate this as being the end of an era.
August 29, 2009 at 9:43 pm
You’re killin’ me, Al. That’s called ‘perspective’.
August 29, 2009 at 10:12 pm
Since I hate killin’ ya, joe, I’ll say that I believe Senator Kennedy should have been voted out of office a long time ago – back when he was a privileged womanising drunk. And I truly want to slam that man for his cowardly actions after the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, but I can’t. So many people, many on my side of the aisle, have given witness to his kindness toard the less fortunate… and so it is not my place to judge.
And while I have little use for former aides, confidants, and Secret Service agents who write “tell all” books, turns out Senator Kennedy shares a relatively rare trait among politicians with presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. That is, all three gave away large sums of money from their own personal fortunes to people in need who they met along the way, and all three did so without ever seeking any publicity.
To use an O’Reilly-ism, that makes the late Senator Edward Kennedy from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts a patriot.
August 30, 2009 at 12:06 am
Even though I disagreed with Kennedy on most everthing, I did watch some of it and it was unbelieveabe how he was loved in Mass. I also felt sorry for any family that is still alive of Mary Jo Kopechne, I do remember how he waited hours to report it and I remember thinking how sad and that he was married, but I really think thru his later years he did all he could to change his image, I hated the way he ranted and ranted on the floor, but I have to say it is true what they were saying today, millions of people are benefiting from legislation that he had his name on, republicans and democrats, he really cared for the poor and underprivledged and it was not put on, I really believe that. But I have to say the coverage was overboard, way to much, you would have thought the president died, I was really getting tired of it. Like others have said enough is enough. And please give me a break, people saying obama is the next camelot, I doubt it. And to Al who wrote above me, you are so right about the three BUSH, REAGAN, and KENNEDY giveing of their personal wealth and quite about it. I am from Texas and if it had not been for BUSH who helped my husband to get his disability before he died of prostate cancer at 54 his last few years would have been so hard for us, and it was not just a form letter he did, he called SS and called us personally to let us know it was being approved asap. I will forever be greatful for that, these libs that hate BUSH do not know the man, and please libs here, do not start the rants that only a lib can do, its old now, . Sen. Kennedy, may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

It’s one thing that the man died, but to cash in on it (via asking for support for legislation he wanted) is super disingenuous.
Unbelievable. Well, actually, it’s not, sigh.
Picture a Pope’s funeral without any mention of his faith. JK Rowlings’ (future) funeral with no mention of Harry Potter. Michael Jackson’s funeral with no mention of his music.
“It’s okay to honor a man but it’s WRONG to mention his life’s work…”
Yeah. Not at all surprising, alas.
August 30, 2009 at 9:56 am
If it’s Sunday, I’m in an argument with Art!
Look, pal, Michael Jackson’s music, JK Rowling’s witchcraft writings and the Pope’s faith will not affect millions of Americans and the health care they receive! These clowns in Congress are actually smitten enough with Kennedy that they’d pass legislation just to honor him, and to hell with the American people and their fate!
In the last six months, our country has had enough “hope and change” to last 10 lifetimes. Enough already.
And I hope this post makes it in before 0bama calls an emergency and shuts down the Internet!
August 30, 2009 at 10:14 am
So proud to live in a country that has a family as noble and giving as the Kennedys. How many parents would be proud to have children and grand children as well-spoken and graceful as those we saw during the memorial speeches yesterday. How can you not be proud of the likes of Teddy’s grand daughter Kylie?
If you have evil things to say about the Kennedy family I hope you have done as much for the world as they before you stink-up this blog with your ill-timed bile.
August 30, 2009 at 10:30 am

Gee… my parents are proud I’m well spoke… AND not a single police report to my name! Now THAT takes talent… apparently.
If you have evil things to say about the Kennedy family I hope you have done as much for the world as they before you stink-up this blog with your ill-timed bile.
I’ll remind you of those feelings next time you talk about a Republican’s family. Somehow, it’s never “ill-timed” to talk about them… right? Gotta love double standards.

Some people would beg to differ.
I love your characterization of the Harry Potter books… teaching our children wiiiitchcraft. heh.

Cute. The ‘baby safe’ ball is a bit much, though.
August 30, 2009 at 10:54 am
Laural – I liked ‘the President was visibly shaken’…
August 30, 2009 at 10:56 am
Almost too real, wasn’t it?
Be perfect if they had Waffle House up there.
August 30, 2009 at 11:00 am
There’s a Waffle House just 15 miles from that Denny’s. Manassas boasts its five star breakfast restaurants.
August 30, 2009 at 11:00 am
Their news clips slay me – they use all the news-speak cliches.
August 30, 2009 at 11:09 am
Guess Waffle House is a southeast thing. Everybody knows Denny’s whether they want to or not.
It had a definite local news by way of CNN look about it. Wasn’t that waitress in ‘Transamerica’?
August 30, 2009 at 11:36 am
The chipsohio household love Waffle Houses in Northeast Ohio. There’s nothing better than Waffles & Smothered Hash Browns.

-The Onion-
Whoa. A little too early on a Sunday for me. I got a as far as ‘certain word’. That was enough for me. “‘Caus, ya know, he’s the president” was pretty good.
August 30, 2009 at 11:42 am
Never heard that word on local news.
August 30, 2009 at 11:43 am
I hope this post makes it in before Obama calls an ermergency and shuts down the internet!
Overwrought much?
August 30, 2009 at 11:47 am
Really. Only W would do something like that…
August 30, 2009 at 11:48 am
Overwrought much?
Heh – there’s no frenzied anti-Obama meme that Missy won’t accept with thanks.
Here’s one – Obama’s going to sell you grannie to CANNIBALS! (I expect to be reading this on Red State by tomorrow.)
August 30, 2009 at 11:58 am
Well, I did call W a CRIMINAL, so I probably don’t have a lot of room to be picking on Missy.
August 30, 2009 at 1:12 pm
I have to point out that Health Care reform wasn’t some new thing for Kennedy. He’d been trying to get it done for a good chunk of his career.
August 30, 2009 at 5:15 pm
You people think I’m making this up?

August 30, 2009 at 5:27 pm
I saw that earlier, missy. Haven’t yet decided whether or not it’s a good idea. Although I haven’t yet had the chance to properly verify, I believe the president already has the authority to do this in certain emergency situations.
August 30, 2009 at 8:28 pm
Here’s a big whopper from the factually challenged Keith Olbermann.
KEITH OLBERMANN: Tonight, at the JFK Library in Boston, the crowds having waited for hours to pay there respects to Edward M. Kennedy, the man they sent to the Senate nine times, who served them in that capacity for nearly five decades.
Good evening from New York.
One year ago this month, as he was undergoing a chemotherapy treatment, Senator Kennedy having read in the newspaper about two servicemen from the same small town in Massachusetts who had been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan respectively. “We are going down there,” he said, to pay a call on the families.
And when his treatment had ended, despite the fact that his treatment had just ended, that‘s exactly what he did. He hugged everyone, he pet the dogs and recalling his oldest brother Joe, the pilot who had been shot down in World War II.
Here’s what really happen Keith!
Now Olbermann has gone after O’Reilly over simple mistakes like this all the time…
