What’s Hot/What’s Not: 08/30/09

What’s Hot:

Ted Kennedy – Kennedy’s death pushed just about everything else to the side the last half of the week.

Beck tops O’Reilly – Like him or not, the fact that Beck had bigger numbers than O’Reilly one day this week is no small achievement…

What’s Not:

FNC’s early morning Kennedy coverage – Not what should be expected from the cable news leader.

Non-business news pandering – FBN interrupting its business coverage to talk about Michael Jackson’s autopsy results with a forensic pathologist raises serious questions about the network’s dedication to business news.

Ratings spat – Olbermann and O’Reilly went at it again this week. This time over who has the most young viewers.

Hyperventilating – Too many commenters threw objectivity out the window when covering Kennedy’s death. This applies to both those who agreed with the Senator and those who didn’t.

Cash Cow? or Beached Whale? – The ruckus over Beck advertisers taking their money elsewhere continued to get played up. Problem is that money didn’t leave FNC. Just Beck.

  1. I mostly watched FNC and didn’t see any of that. I’d say supporters of Sen. Kennedy were given more latitude, but nothing over the top.

Spud, you’re referring to us, right?

Re: advertisers boycotting Beck: “Problem is that money didn’t leave FNC. Just Beck.” (I think you meant money didn’t leave FNC, money just left Beck”? )

Well maybe “money” and advertisers left Beck, but viewers sure didn’t. People on boards I visit that typically don’t follow national politics are all extremely uinterested in what Beck has to say, as are apparently millions of others who watch his program and who have bought his “Common Sense” book.

I hate to break it to y’all, but I think the boycott has failed! With a program as highly rated as Glenn’s, other advertisers will just pick up where the others left.

  4. Not: No mention of FOX early Kennedy coverage on FOX News Watch. Didn’t really expect it, still would have been nice.

What should they have mentioned about Fox’s early coverage of Kennedy on Fox News Watch? That Fox covered it too much? They were wall to wall Kennedy from the moment it happened.

They had Earhardt on the air breaking into Beck numerous times till finally it was all Kennedy from then on till around 5:20 ET when the Fox and Friends crew took over.

Then Bill gets blamed for the ratins spat? Also, it was Beck who had more fun with Keith lying about his ratings than Bill. It’s pretty bad for Keith when even Dan Abrams site is calling Keith a liar for his ratings imagination.

Fox didn’t do a good enough job of exposing the left for tying to capitalize on Kennedy’s death. Of course the other networks weren’t going to mention that. They were all in locksteap of changing the name from Obama care to Kennedy Care.

NBC was even attacking John McCain for not compromising at all (like Kennedy would do) over health care legislation.

The only thing one can say about Beck and the advertising boycott is how bad the media is in just running Color Of Change press releases and not exposing the group or their faulty claims.

This statement proves you didn’t watch the whole broadcast. It didn’t go “wall to wall”, which really wasn’t wall to wall but wall to commercial to wall to commercial, until after 2:45 am.
