I realize this probably belongs in the “Where Is Courtney Friel” thread, but it’s dropped way, way down. According to the slapmonkeys on whatever the replacement is for Reporter Caps, she started yesterday doing an hour a day on the online Strategy Room “show.” Hopefully this doesn’t precede her return to actual TV.
On a more positive note, Ainsley Airhead is nowhere to be found on the upcoming weekend TV schedule.
Watching my tape of Morning Joe. Scarborough mentioned something I noticed during Balloon Boy yesterday. “CNN and MSNBC were running tape of the balloon when they didn’t have a live feed, with ‘recorded earlier’ on the screen. Another cable network said screw it, and just threw whatever video they had on the screen and pretended it was all live.” Joe said his producer turned to him and said, “God, I respect those guys!”
I hereby retract my support for how cable covered Balloon Boy. I’m just getting back to a TV, so I’m a little behind on the visuals, but the home video I’m seeing of the balloon shows Crazy Guy purposely sending that thing into the sky…without a ‘box’ attached to it. It never had a box, and it clearly didn’t have another opening for someone to climb through. So who convinced the media there was a kid in there, and why didn’t they make some effort to know what they were dealing with before taking his word for it?
A caller to Randi Rhodes, claiming he was a comic from LA, says Balloon Dad (sorry, can’t remember his name…thank God) is a well known production guy that does reels for comics to present to club owners as demos. He said every comic who’s been around a while is well aware of him, and his gig is always to get something on television. The comic, a guy named Roy, said he even worked with him on a failed reality show concept called Laughing Gas, which, if true, is pretty funny, considering the balloon was filled with helium!
The media got had by a con man…a con man who let his son vomit on television this morning. They need to stop putting that family on camera and get Child Protective Services over there.
Oh my God, Ed Schultz just showed the video of the kid getting sick on Today and GMA. I’ve never seen anything like that in my life. Diane Sawyer had to tell mom to go help her son!
OK, so they’re doing a Rush/Sanchez-story on FOX. They used an old picture of Rush, circa 300 lbs. I think we can generally put aside the idea of an ‘ideological slant’ as far as how he is presented, visually. Maybe they should all update their file-photos a little more often.
Although, in his case, it’s a bit more egregious, since so many news outlets made a big deal over his recent weight-loss. You might think they’d have a pic…from one of those stories! Which, to me, also indicates ‘sloppy’ over ‘slant’. Not that any of us really care, of course.
Courtney Friel also has a new Lips and Ears segment up today. Very odd since Liz Smith has been doing them for almost the last 6 weeks. Why would they not use her for almost a month and a half and then poof she’s back again?
boogiewoogee-I didn’t know you visited ‘fan sites’ like that. Although, I guess its good for a laugh once in a while.
Maybe they sent Courtney to a 6-week crash course in reporter basics? Nah not likely.
Since we rarely watch the online crap, she can be on there all day and all night for all we care as long as she doesn’t appear on our TV again.
We sometimes look in on the creepy perv-stalker sites but, as you said, mainly for laughs. Although they do get kind of icky sometimes.
Ainsley did her headline reading the other night, but for what we believe is the third weekend in a row, she is not in the line-up to co-anchor any of the news shows this weekend.
It seems like each time Ainsley gets some sort of promotion or even just a shot at something more prominent, she screws it up and is relegated back to late night headline reading and packaged bits for Hannity’s show.
Can’t help ya, Blue. I’m not proficient in that “screen grabbing” you kids are into. I was watching Shep, and he did make several references to “this is not live video right now”, but there was no notation on the screen. They just kept swapping shots, and sometimes Shep would say, “OK, this is live.”
All nets were alternating between live and tape of the balloon. but CNN and MSNBC were putting up “recorded earlier” or similar banners on top of their taped footage. I can’t say for sure if FNC did or did not.

The Men Who Stare At Goats,
Chickaboomer, The Daily Show, John Oliver describes CNN’s professionalism. The Video TDS segment on Chickaboomer is hysterical.
