What’s Hot/What’s Not: 11/15/09
What’s Hot:
Lou Dobbs quits CNN – This news was speculated about forever but the sudden way it went down sent shockwaves both inside and outside CNN. Immediate speculation turned to whether Dobbs would go to FBN or FNC, but the networks played down such a possibility.
John King gets 7pm – CNN didn’t waste any time naming a replacement for Dobbs as John King was named the next morning.
Rick Sanchez doesn’t get 7pm – A clearly disappointed Rick Sanchez Tweeted his way through his grief at not getting the 7pm slot. Maybe a little too publicly. Sanchez is well known for playing fast and loose with Twitter – earlier in the week he was crowing about his hour being the only CNN hour in Dayside to beat FNC and MSNBC (apparently in the demo though we’re not sure since Sanchez wasn’t specific) – but this recent outburst probably didn’t go down too well inside CNN.
Murdoch “backs” Beck “Racist” comment – Predictably, Rupert Murdoch’s apparent agreement with Glenn Beck’s “racist” remark spread across the blue blogs like wildfire.
Jeff Zucker Lives? – News that Jeff Zucker may be retained in a post Comcast/GE deal for NBCU left a lot of people kibitzing about whether that was a good move or not.
Carrie Prejean’s Meltdown – Carrie Prejean’s threat to walk off Larry King Live over King’s (what could be generously called) fumbling questioning of her over her settlement with the Miss California organization dominated the news for at least a day.
MSNBC uses fake Sarah Palin photos – The Red Blogs were up in arms but I thought they overplayed their hand…
What’s Not:
Possible Dayside changes to MSNBC – Word leaked out via TVNewser that MSNBC was contemplating breaking up Dylan Ratigan’s Morning Meeting into two shows, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. This is just the latest signal that MSNBC Dayside is in real trouble and they’re still trying to figure out how to deal with it. Ironically, Nancy Snyderman’s show is still apparently untouchable despite all signs pointing to it being the weakest link. With the new Health Initiative from NBCU, MSNBC is truly stuck between a rock and a hard place with Snyderman.
Three fingers for you – Keith Olbermann’s three fingered salute to Carrie Prejean left a bad taste in even some of his supporters.
CNN.com ends live anchored newscasts – CNN plays this as a shifting of priorities and resources but it’s unfortunate for those who regularly tuned in on the internet where TVs weren’t available.
FNC vs. YouTube – FNC sent a bunch of takedown notices regarding the News1News Channel.
B Roll Blues – Hannity caught a lot of flak, thanks to Jon Stewart, for using the wrong video to make a statement about Tea Party protests…

I had forgotten about the FNC/Youtube thing. Earlier today, as a matter of fact, a link I clicked had the message, “This Video Cannot Be Played Here” and directed me to FNC’s own video site. I guess I see their point… still don’t like it.
