The Ed Show: Kos vs. Matthews…

DailyKos has the video of Kos trashing Chris Matthews on The Ed Show for trashing the Democrat “net-roots”.

What makes this truly bizarre isn’t that Kos is fighting back – that’s to be expected – what’s truly bizarre is that MSNBC signed off on setting up Matthews to be trashed on one of its own shows, knowing full well he would get trashed. Rule #1 of a cable news network: You support the home team. You don’t necessarily have to turn a blind eye to what Matthews did and try and sweep it under the rug. But there’s a better way of handling this than having a different MSNBC program set up Matthews for target practice, with Schultz helping to aim for Kos. For example, a Hardball showdown. It’s where the original incident occurred, it only makes sense for that to be the place for the response.

  1. Ed didn’t just help aim; he did some shooting himself. Did he already get his pink-slip and doesn’t care anymore?

  2. Call me cynical… but a great way to boost ratings, is to have a feud. Is it possible that in an effort to help themselves (and perhaps save their skins if the “new management” thinks they program do better), they started up a little feud? Some blogs talk about it… then the story heats up a bit with the big sites talking about it… before long Drudge has a headline, and TMZ is asking questions. Could be a very clever strategy.

    Or not.

  3. I really hate to see the lefties implode. It breaks my heart.

The poor lemmings don’t know where to turn.

“Should I follow Barack, Nancy & Harry and demands ObamaCare be passed?”

“Or should I follow my idol Olbermann and demand the bill be trashed & burned?”

    “I’m so confused.”

  4. ” Rule #1 of a cable news network: you support the home team.”
That’s the rule for non opinion cable news networks like CNN. For opinion cable news networks MSNBC & FOX; it’s every host for himself. :)

  5. Not really. I can’t recall any FNC program where they brought on a guest to take shots at another FNC host. Usually they do it face to face on the show where the incident happened.

  6. You just don’t do this to your own people/co-workers/fellow employees.

    In any business. Period.

  7. It’s conceivable – though not likely – that Schultz contacted Matthews beforehand and told him that he was going to have Moulitsas on to respond to Matthews’ criticism. And Matthews didn’t object.

Given Schultz’s temperament and style, I doubt it.

  8. “Not really. I can’t recall any FNC program where they brought on a guest to take shots at another FNC host. Usually they do it face to face on the show where the incident happened.”
Your probably right, I don’t see enough Fox to know for sure but perhaps one of the many Fox watchers here can think of a case. O’Rielly is pretty thin skinned; so perhaps something he said about another host like Rivera.

  9. The closest I’ve seen before this is Scarborough alluding to “others here”, and I think KO may have done that a few times, too. But when Ed Schultz blurted out “Chris Mathews”, I couldn’t believe my ears. I’d love to know if anyone approved it, or if he just naturally progressed from using it on his radio show earlier without thinking. He almost always repeats that day’s radio subject on The Ed Show.

  10. Now that I think about it; I think there was some on air grousing from the more liberal CNN pundits about Lou Dobb’s more outrageous birther & immigration statements. I just can’t think of a specific incident at the moment.

Lib on lib war breaking out everywhere. I hope the networks report on this “civil war” as gleefully as they did about the supposed republican civil war a few months ago.

Let the circular firing squad go at it. Very entertaining.

i think people are making too big of a thing out of this… schultz didnt even criticize matthews there. he just repeated his statements, showed the video to moulitsos and he answered. the possibility of a feud or spat here between matthews and ed is highly unlikely. and seeing as how matthews likes to shoot off at the mouth all the time saying random things without thinking sometimes, people expect it out of him.

  13. L&J, do you even watch cable news? They’ve been reporting the dissension in the Democratic Party incessantly.

  14. he just repeated his statements, showed the video to moulitsos and he answered

Yes, but it’s not like Moulitsas doesn’t have a venue to respond to Matthews. He has a major blog to do so.

For Schultz to invite him on the network and let him rake Matthews over – he must have known that would happen – is pretty eye opening.

And let’s be blunt: Matthews was also implicitly taking a shot at Schultz too when he (Matthews) criticized those on the left opposing Obama.

Matthews may be more “sinned against than sinner” here but it could be argued that he “sinned” as well.

  15. “For Schultz to invite him on the network and let him rake Matthews over – he must have known that would happen – is pretty eye opening.”

true… i wonder who allowed that. somebody must have given him the idea to bring someone to rail against matthews. maybe matthews will invite moulitsos to debate about it… thats the good thing about chris. he is always game to debate someone.

  16. I’m wondering if Schultz is concerned about losing his show. During his show tonight he made reference to fighting for his show to be aired on MSNBC. Unfortunately, you cannot determine if Ed is talking past or current tense. I’m certain Ed is concerned with the recent ratings book & is also concerned about Comcast’s purchase.

  17. “for non opinion cable news networks like CNN.”

When did CNN become a “non opinion” network? Throughout the 90s, it was known as the Clinton News Network, and in more recent years, the Crescent News Network for their blatant biases.

Interesting to see some of these liberals now experiencing their own brand of everyday rudeness.
Markos is one very angry man.

  19. Joe hates KO,KO hates Chrissy,Chrissy hates ED,Daily Kos hates MSNBC….man without Bush to aim their collected hate at their all losing it.LOL!!!!

  20. bushleaguer Says:

I don’t know if “trashing” is the right word to describe this. This Kos guy basically refuted Matthews’ assertion (which was pretty harsh) and threw his comment in regards to “mission accomplished” in Iraq back at him.

I saw Schultz on Morning Joe on Thursday and they were talking about the health care bill and I think Schultz sees himself as a progressive talk show host who happens to have a show on MSNBC and considers himself to be part of the progressive movement, and that would include Olbermann, Maddow, progressive talkers and progressive blogs. He used “we” several times when he was on Morning Joe talking about why progressives are revolting against the Senate bill. I guess he took Matthews “they aren’t real Democrats” line personally.

  21. I think BL’s assessment is accurate. BW’s assessment that CNN is biased is more evidence that anything ‘they’ perceive as not biased their way is automatically biased against them.

  22. Missy, I like the link. Enjoy the show! ;-)

  23. “Joe hates KO,KO hates Chrissy,Chrissy hates ED,Daily Kos hates MSNBC”

none of those are even true. nobody hates anybody just for their opinions on msnbc.
