Countdown fading?
Daily Finance’s Jeff Bercovici writes about Countdown’s January ratings sliding. I smell a leak. But from whom? According to Bercovici’s numbers Campbell Brown came within 12,000 average viewers of beating Coutndown in the Demo. This past week probably is what saved Countdown from falling to 3rd as the show has beaten Brown’s show handily every night this week so far. Bercovici also has Phil Griffin commenting on Countdown’s January numbers with surprising frankness…and some spin.
Griffin, not surprisingly, says he doesn’t believe Olbermann’s recent hiccups are part of any larger trend. “Keith has been our tentpole,” he says. “I watch the show every night. It’s a great show. It’s as smart and clever and fun as any out there, and I’m pleased with where we are.”
He attributes Olbermann’s January ratings slip to a news cycle in which international news, rather than domestic politics, was the No. 1 story. “On big, breaking international news, CNN tends to do better than us. They did a great job in Haiti, and I tip my hat to them,” he says. “We’re the place for politics, and there are times when politics does great, and there are times when it doesn’t.” With primaries in the midterm elections already looming, he says, “I think we’ll get our momentum back.”

‘Countdown Fading’ .. and no one commenting. Connection? Hmmm..

^Eh, it’s Friday. No one here but us shut-ins.

Queef Oberdouche would have better ratings if he wasn’t in the bag for King Barry Hussein. How was that?

Countdown is a show I never miss.
We need Mr. Olbermann (& Rachel) to stand up for our President Obama big time. Both these two head anchors of MSNBC are the smartest anchors on TV.

“Keith has been our tentpole,” he says.
Uh, griffy. That’s a little tmi, k?

Hmm, I didn’t know the purpose of “anchors” were to stand up for the President. I went to J-School (yes I did) and must have missed class the day that was taught.
Cheap snark aside (sorry), haven’t both individuals been somewhat critical of the President recently? Re budget freezes, healthcare reform et cetera?

Griffin is right; the Haiti story boosted CNN, mainly at the expense of MSNBC. Now that Haiti is off the front page the Olbermann/Maddow ratings are returning to normal.
But I’ve noticed Olbermann has been slowly slipping, slightly, for months and often is edged out by Grace in the “all important demo”.

He will bounce back as 2010 goes along and Politics become a front ans center issue.

Weather Olbermann admits it or not, he wants another republican president to be elected. That way his “followers” will tune in for his insane anti rupublican rants

I could’ve sworn there was some pretty big political news in January.
Was I hallucinating? Wasn’t there a pretty big senatorial election in Massachusetts, that shook U.S. politics to its core?
Wasn’t “the most brilliant, eloquent President of all-time” giving his first State of the Union?
Yet people weren’t watching “The Place for Politics”. Hmmm….
January 30, 2010 at 9:08 pm
Olbermann’s show has become way too predictable and, recently, way too over-the-top.
Also, he clearly doesn’t have the knowledge that Maddow does in regards to politics. Too bad that Maddow doesn’t have the 8pm time slot….at least she is willing to debate Republicans.
In regards to the network, Griffin is right that they will see increased ratings with the upcoming elections, but that isn’t recipe for long-term success for a news network.

I disagree about the ratings spike, BL. The Place For Politics has an election coming up every two years, and for political junkies, the lead-up starts the day after the last election. MSNBC should expect ratings spikes on a regular basis.

Joe, not when there are enormous Dim losses on the horizon. I don’t think September-Nov. will be very good for MSDNC.

Actually, ratings might at least level, what with conservatives tuning in to see the conniption-fest. Pop up the Act III, sit back and smile.
January 31, 2010 at 6:19 pm
^I’m deeply offended. And what’s a ‘conniption’, anyway?
January 31, 2010 at 6:21 pm
If you don’t know what it means, then what’s to be offended?

Silly Laura. I know what it means, but I don’t know where that odd word came from. I know I know, I can Google it. Why spoil the mystery?
