Olbermann, Matthews, Maddow to do Obama/Congressional Republican recap…
Keith Olbermann wrote on Daily Kos this afternoon that MSNBC will be doing a two hour special tonight from 8-10pm on today’s Obama powow with congressional Republicans…
This is a plug for sure, but kind of an organic one because our ability to get out the word on this is limited by the lateness of the hour.
But from 8 to 10 PM Eastern tonight, Rachel, Chris Matthews and I will be presenting a two-hour special report on the President’s remarks (and answers) to the Republican Retreat (and wow did it live up to that name).
We will be aiming for analysis and perspective for sure, but not to the point of carving this up into little soundbites. We will be running, as they say, “large chunks” and then cutting back to the studio to see which one of our jaws can drop the closest to the floor.
Parenthetically, I always said the actual “Prime Minister’s Question Time” on C-SPAN was one of my favorite tv shows but the thought of doing an American version gave me the mental image of all of our politicians running screaming into the streets after the first five minutes of questioning.
Apparently that would all but one of our politicians.

Wow, Spud, with friends like Puhleeze you sure don’t need any enemies!
From my vantage point of wisdom and grace let me be the first Fox Fan to set the proper example of tolerance and respect to Puhleeze”s comment.

I found it really interesting and great television. Both sides say they did well in the exchange and that may be true; but MSNBC is rebroadcasting it in primetime and FNC cut it off twenty minutes before it ended. That says it all for me.
My hunch, and I really hope I’m wrong, is that if the Republicans ever invite Obama back to their retreat there will be no cameras to record the event no matter how bad it makes them look.
I’ve heard Democrats say they should invite Obama to their retreat but they may find it a big a political gamble as the the Republicans did.

This is going to be awesome. I’ve only seen short clips so far today, but I liked what I saw. That’s the guy I voted for.
January 29, 2010 at 5:22 pm
You know, I just may tune in, too.
I’ll close my eyes and pretend it is BHO negotiating Obamacare sams any special interest groups on C-Span
Now that’s the guy I voted for, not.

^ What?
January 29, 2010 at 6:26 pm
Just sarcasm, Fritz, that’s all.
If I were less cynical I might have actually believed BHO and continue to believe him.
However, I am. I didn’t and I still don’t. My opinion and support/nonsupport of BHO is based what he actually does, not what circuses he gives us in the Coliseum (sarcasm again).

It was nice to see him stand up and be a Democrat for once. Yes, we disagree with the other side. That’s the whole point of ‘other sides’.

I think it was great and would be a smart thing to do semi-regularly. President Obama came out of it looking pretty good as did the Republican members of Congress. Even though I don’t expect much relenting of positions to come from either side any time soon, the exchange does set the stage for a possible working relationship in the next Congress when it is likely that Republican support will actually be needed in order to get anything accomplished.
While this can certainly work to the Republicans’ advantage, as is the nature of the presidency Mr. Obama stands to gain the most from this. I see no reason why the Repubs would not want these to be televised in the future.
Totally unrelated: The spell check on this particular computer wants me to spell “criticised” as “criticized”, but it has no problem with the word “televised”. What is the rule for using “s” instead of “z” (which is pronounced “zed” for me and “zee” for you) in American English?

– What is the rule for using “s” instead of “z” –
My mother-in-law could tell you, being a retired grammar-teacher, but it’s midnight and she’s asleep.
January 29, 2010 at 9:33 pm
-sleep-
Now there’s a bloody interesting concept.
January 29, 2010 at 9:49 pm
The rule is hard to follow on a blog with US and UK writers. I read Autosport from England a lot, so I’m constantly confused about the s/z thing. I’ve been known to write “humour” and “colour”, too.

– “humour” and “colour” –
Must be that bad element you’re hanging out with.

I used to try very hard to Americanise my spelling because, well… because I’m an American who shouldn’t have to explain why I use a superfluous “u” in some words. Then a colleague made the point that I speak with a distinct Brit accent and it’s probably a bit silly for me to spend much time correcting my “centre”.
January 29, 2010 at 10:13 pm
Indeed. There’s nothing worse than having an off ‘centre’..

I heard someone say yesterday (cant remember who) I agree with 80% of what Obama says, and I DISAGREE with about 80% of what he does.
