Ouch…

This is kinda embarrassing…(via J$)

  1. Guess Joe was busy that day..

  2. Forgetting J$’s cheap shot at MSNBC; there is actually some interesting information in this poll excerpt.
First the poll questions that J$ links to have not been released yet by CBS, so I’m not sure if they are accurate or even if it is legal to publish them without permission.
Assuming they are correct they do give some interesting info that seems to back up an idea I have as to why FNC does so well in the ratings.
The poll interviewed more Democrats (30%) than Republicans (28%) but the numbers watching cable news were over 5-1 (269-50) in favor of FNC over MSNBC.
50 is obviously not enough be meet the poll requirements in sampling thus the note in the poll.
This tells me, not that FNC has more viewers (that’s obvious), but that Democrats, in general, watch less cable news than Republicans.
My thought is that liberal/ Democrat supporters (who skew younger and more tech savvy) tend to get there political news more from the net; on sites like Huffpost or TPM: rather than cable news. Conservatives/ Republicans (who are generally older) obtain there political info from the more traditional talk radio or cable news TV sources.
Independents would not be a factor in that conservative independents (tea party types etc.) would watch FOX or listen to talk radio while liberal minded independents and moderates would get most of their political news from sources other than FNC or MSNBC; who both have a preconceived bias.

  3. fritz, don’t shoot the messenger! The CBS and NYT were the ones who asked the question and published the answer!

  4. “First the poll questions that J$ links to have not been released yet by CBS, so I’m not sure if they are accurate or even if it is legal to publish them without permission.”

Well then you better tell the NY Times. I took that screengrab right off their website.

  5. J$: Interesting, but it was an honest mistake.. There was no link to the poll so I Googled it and got the CBS version which has those questions unreleased. Wonder why? It doesn’t affect my slant on the data though.

Gee, Fritz, I really hate to think that you worked your little fingers to the bone on the keyboard when you have Lib Code that would have saved you all that work:

    Conservative/Repub/TeaPartier = old brain dead Fox/TV zombies

Progressives/Dems?Workerparty = hip cool engaged thoughtful intellectuals :)

  7. Fritz, I agree that your mistake doesn’t affect your slant on the data. So why did you lead off your comment with what you admit is an irrelevancy? If it wasn’t to somehow impugn the data, then was it just to take a shot at me by suggesting I was doing something illegal by publishing it?

  8. Progressives/Dems/Workerparty = hip cool engaged thoughtful intellectuals.

    Yep, that’s us. ;-)

  9. dollydollarite Says:

    You caught me out, Joe!

I had you firmly in mind, to the point that my heart was beating so wildly I could barely type, the whole time. :)

PS If I knew how I would have made that big smile a rather coy wink!

  10. Dolly: All I said was that conservatives generally skewed older and liked TV and liberals in general skewed younger and preferred the Internet: a generally accepted fact.
If you feel that “Conservative/RepubTeapartier = old brain dead Fox TV zombies” & “Progressive/ Dems?workerparty= hip cool thoughtful intellectuals” then you may have to explain yourself to some of the more conservative minded commenters on this blog. I certainly don’t feel that way although it is interesting that you would describe yourself in those terms.
Your “Lib code” is actually an uneducated perception of how conservatives think liberals view the world and says more about you & conservative views than me & liberal views.

  11. dollydollarite Says:

    Lighten up, Fritz.

I was just poking fun (and “fun” is an amusing way to convey a kernel of truth) and there you went again typing your little fingers to the bone.

If every time I read or heard a lib saying essentially my code talk I lost a minute of my life by now I would be a hot young thing again.

  12. Grammie, hit this ; instead of this : and you’ll get this. ;-)

  13. Fritz:
You’re theory leaves out one important fact. FNC destroys it’s competition in the “key” demo. O’Reilly had twice as many viewers last week in the younger demo than the rest of cable news had in total viewers.

But, if it makes you feel better to say that MSNBC’s ratings are so low because all the kool kids play on the internet, fine.

  14. J$: It wasn’t irrelevant. I was just giving Spud a heads up that the data hadn’t been released by CBS. Sorry; nothing to do with you; I don’t care if you use illegal stuff or not.
I wanted to see what questions led up to the ones you posted (for context purposes) and was surprised to not find them. Even the NYT version skips the two before the ones you highlighted. The other questions CBS blocked were all about people’s views on the tea party movement which is interesting.
Dolly: No problem. I wasn’t making a partisan comment, just pointing out a reason why FNC may do so much better in the ratings battle when the there are lots of potential liberal cable news viewers out there who are interested in politics and news.
It actually says to me that MSNBC & to a lesser extent CNN are unlikely to ever catch FNC no matter what show formats they use or what talent they employ. Sad but true.

  15. ^Which makes the entire exercise of giving a flip about cable news potentially irrelevant in the not too distant future. Fritz, you’re depressing. :-(

  16. dollydollarite Says:

    Thanks, Joe. ;)

  17. LS: you make a good point but it doesn’t change my thesis. The demo is usually 1/4 -1/3 total audience on all cable news networks. My idea is that cable news viewers are generally older and older people are generally more conservative; there fore more more viewers for FNC.

^Which makes the entire exercise of giving a flip about cable news potentially irrelevant in the not too distant future. Fritz, you’re depressing.
Joe: Don’t be depressed. Television will be replaced by Internet TV in the next decade just like CD’s are losing out to music downloads. Our day will come. ;-)

  18. What is this “music downloads” you speak of?

  19. itunes Joe itunes. Maybe your day will be delayed. :-)

Stop calling me old! I’m 32! I live in the most conservative county in one of the most conservatives state in the union, though. Even the young folks here are conservative. We’re just smart that way. Insert smiley face.

  21. lonestar77 Says:

I just re-read my post. No need for a joke about me saying we’re smart while I put an “s” on the wrong word.

  22. dollydollarite Says:

Not long ago I told my grand kids that the family joke when I was little was that I had been vaccinated with a phonograph needle.

After several seconds of puzzled silence one of them piped up to ask “what’s a phonograph needle, Grammie?”.

Just wait, you whippersnappers! What goes around comes around and you will get yours one day. :)
