Free for All: 03/05/10

My bad. The Crawford news distracted me this morning and I forgot to put this up, which probably contributed to the polluting of several threads. So, what’s on your mind?

Keith Olbermann vs. ESPN Bill Simmons
    (http://www.mediaite.com/online/keith-olbermann-has-some-strong-words-for-bill-simmons)

Keith Olbermann posted a comment on his MLB blog about Bill Simmons..

“”I am again left to marvel how somebody can rise to a fairly prominent media position with no discernible insight or talent, save for an apparent ability to mix up a vast bowl of word salad very quickly.”

    ESPN Bill Simmons responds…
    (http://twitter.com/sportsguy33)

“KO, please know the feeling is mutual. You’re my worst case scenario for my career in 12 yrs: a pious, unlikable blowhard who lives alone.

I’m furious that my Tiger column distracted America from a detailed and only mildly creepy case for Johnny Orsino’s Hall of Fame candidacy.”

    And this…

“I feel bad about saying Olbermann lives alone. I forgot about his cats.”

  2. Thanks for taking responsibility for the polluting of several threads. Usually we have to do that without your help.

  3. Following up Ouchboy’s comment in the polluted Crawford thread.

Palin isn’t stupid, but she’s not smart enough to hold high office. In my opinion, it’s by choice. She obviously has the ability to acquire knowledge; she just doesn’t seem interested.

Liberals aren’t looking for a handout. We pay our taxes and expect the government to use them for things like regulations and highway construction for all of us, and food stamps and unemployment insurance and low-cost health care for those of us at the bottom while we look for our next job.

  4. chipsohio Says:

Joe…as a conservative I’m in agreement with you re: Sarah Palin. She lacks the intellectual curiosity to be a serious candidate for President. If she does obtain that “desire” to be more interested in public policy vs. generic talking points then I’ll reconsider her as a viable candidate.

Did anyone else catch Harry Reid yesterday “spouting off” that we only lost 36K jobs last month. As someone who has been “bouncing around” on the temporary job market, Reid’s statement really ticked me off. I certainly understand the background/tone of his comments.

Keep on talking Harry…as a conservative independent you’re really getting me “Fired Up” for 2010 mid-term elections.

joeremi- I am one of the people in need of government benefits, I,ve been laid off for 15 months and just getting by, there’s nothing wrong with emerency help from tax payers. I,ve paid taxes for over 40 years, but the tax payer don’t owe me a finanical living for the rest of my life. Thats the only point I’am trying to make. Some people think the rest of us owe them a free ride and living without earning it. Now for Palin, I am assuming you and chipsohio have read her book since you’all have strong opinions concerning her intellectual intelligence. If i remember correctly one only has to be 35 years of age and an american citizen to become potus. I would agree she needs to firm up on some issues, but thats because shes lived in alaska an has not been exposed to inside washington spin and total BS. I hope you are not forming your opinion on the way she forms her speech or that northwestern accent she has. I think the reason the people that don’t like her because of the so called lack of intellect is very unfair. I think the people that don’t like her is because of what she stands for and feels threaten by her. By the way , I’am not a republican or conserative, just some perspective as to were i fit in the rim of politics. I will end with my opinion that people that thinks she is not qualified would not like her no matter what she said or done, and that OK, we all have our opinions and reasons for the way we think. I bet thou if she was a liberal and ran with Obama everything would be just fine with her intellect.

I like how the MSM is labeling the Pentagon shooter, John Patrick Bedell, a “Right Wing Extremist” when he’s a registered Democrat who hated President Bush and believes that President Bush was behind September 11th. He also belongs to far left groups and beliefs which includes PETA, Greenpeace, Michael Moore and Al Franken.

    via Ouchboy

“I think the people that don’t like her is because of what she stands for and feels threaten by her.”

It is not so clear what she actually stands for if one closely examines her record in public service and since. Space constraints would not allow a complete list of factual, let alone political inconsistencies her ,now voluminous, record offers.

Objective observations aplenty are out there, if one could bear reading a “Liberal” blog, or two. Also, by all means put something like AK Mudflats up next to C4P or Team Sarah and come back and go on the record as to what she “stands” for.

Sarah’s only goal in life is to trade that S in for a Denali of Dinero. That doesn’t “threaten” me, or any other Liberal or politically unaligned person I have ever discussed the matter with, in the least bit. It does bother me to a huge degree that, for some unknown reason, her “wild ride” explanation for the Trygg baby has been taken at face value by our vaunted “free press”.

My pet peeve is that far too many who are able to, decline to critically review information given them by authority figures(and wannabes too) that want to run our government. Actually, it might be more correct to say that most people do not update the knowledge & skills needed to honestly appraise what they are told.

  8. Ouchboy (I get a kick out of that username, by the way), I have know way of knowing how much of Sarah’s book was penned by her, so can’t use that as a source. My impression of her intellect comes from her bizarre, rambling answers and speeches. Pull any five phrases out rearrange them and put them back in, and you’ll get the same result. It’s a series of bumper stickers.

When she’s not in the ‘attack dog’ mode she was in during the campaign, I find her quite charming, funny (great comic timing on Leno), and – as us boys say – “easy on the eyes”. I’m not at all threatened by her. She can’t be on my TV enough. I wouldn’t vote for her, but she’s endlessly entertaining.

Liberals: Your contention that they feel the world owes them a “free ride” is baseless. They simply believe in some degree of wealth sharing in a developed country so we don’t end up with a few rich CEOs running everything, while the rest of us beg for their scraps. This fantasy America the right lives in where all capitalism is good and all socialism is evil doesn’t exist. Every smooth highway you traverse is a socialist project. The conservative goal isn’t for no socialism; merely less than liberals support.

  9. zonedaiatlas Says:

Sir Winston Churchill – “Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, it’s inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.”

  10. Sir Winston also wanted to tee up the Soviet Union to kick off WW III,
Code name – Operation Unthinkable. Once VE day was in sight the Brits kicked him to the curb, tout de suite ! Tenacity was Winnies’ strong suite, not political theory.

  11. Snappy comeback, Zoned. No effort to actually address my point, but who’s counting?

  12. -Liberals simply believe in some degree of wealth sharing in a developed country-

As do conservatives but through voluntary giving as individuals and private groups, and through public support on the state and local levels. Published statistics have shown for years and years that conservatives put their money where their mouths are.

Beyond its role as the facilitator of commerce and arbiter thereof, social programmes through the federal government generally create more long-term problems than they solve. While exceptions can certainly be cited, these could have been handled through compacts between the individual sovereign states, and some already were.

  13. As do conservatives but through voluntary giving as individuals and private groups…

You’ll forgive me if I don’t place much faith in that particular version of trickle-down economics.

But enough out of me for now. L&J’s statement that I “practically run this blog” made me nervous, and tells me I’m a little too eager to play in this sandbox. All yours, Spud. Hiatus time for me. Another time..

  14. Nothing “trickle down” about it. It’s why the American experiment became the greatest economic and standard of living power house in the history of civilisation.

Nothing is perfect, however, and if you’re looking for Utopia you will be disappointed. We have 50 separate and sovereign baskets with which to safeguard our eggs, but liberals (and socialists) want to trust our eggs being in one big basket. Seems kind of dumb not to have a back-up plan for when the weight of your eggs inevitably rips the bottom out of your basket… your only basket.

  15. wriskee Says:

    Quick quiz …

What is the heaviest egg in our National basket ?

    hmmm … ?

I have it now. It is the one labeled DoD.

Let’s hack that one up and give our fragile basket a chance to survive our fiscal profligacy. Just think of all the taxes we would be able to let the people keep if that egg could be broken, cooked up and sold off. Well the harmless bits at least, we would need to process the toxic parts ourselves. We could basically reinvent the Army/Navy surplus retail industry.

  16. Wriskee, you’re a walking cliche. Let’s put daisies in their gun-barrels while we’re at it.

  17. -What is the heaviest egg in our National basket?-

For FY 2010, Social Security is currently the heaviest single egg at 19.63% and growing. Defence, the constitutionally-mandated role of the federal government, is second at 18.74% and closely followed by Unemployment, Welfare & Other Mandatory Services at 16.13%.

Mandatory spending (including interest on the debt) now encompasses 61.5% of the federal budget. As federal “entitlements” and deficit spending grows year-by-year, so too does the percentage of mandatory spending.

  18. Joeremi- I don’t unstand the big deal about who penned her book, but i do know where you got that statement. (Cris Mathews) He tried to make a big deal out of it. Thats the way liberal pundits try to counter sarah, they don’t know how or are afraid to criticise her for what she stands for. wriskee commented about not knowing what she stands for, its very clear to me that she is for prolife, for consevative values, she believes we should drill for oil in the US so we don’t have to depend on oil from people that wants to kill us. She don’t want that HC bill that nobody really understands, she believes marriage, is between a man and a woman, she believes in christian ,family values she stands for less government that she believes well control our individual lives, i could go on an on, people that don,t know what she stands for just don’t want to know. Its ok to disagree if you don’t share her view, thats why we have a two party system so you can make your on decisions. We fought wars to obtain that right for us to disagree. She has a right to her beliefs. When shes in her as you say attack dog mode, she is defending her political beliefs and exposing liberal views so you can deside whats right for you. Do you really believe its ok to write all the crap thats been writen about her and her family. IT was ok for liberals to attack her but not her children, that is nasty, and unexceptionable, she has never attacked anybody outside of government or media as far as i know. Her children is neither one. Its ok to attack her on her pollitical views, thats fair game. Have all of you out there read the nasty lies that has been told on her and her family, its unbelievable that anybody could say those vile things about another person, no matter who it is. I believe some of you out there do it out of spite, or you get some kind of thrill out of trashing somebody that don’t see things the way you do. I know you will respond back to me with the tea party signs and all. Those that are racist is not right either, let me make that clear. theres alot more i would like to say but i have to stop for now.

”“A seven-month-old baby girl survived three days alone with a bullet in her chest beside the bodies of her parents and toddler brother.
“Argentines Francisco Lotero, 56, and Miriam Coletti, 23, shot their children before killing themselves after making an apparent suicide pact over fears about global warming…
“Her parents said they feared the effects of global warming in a suicide note discovered by police.”’
    ***http://michellemalkin.com/2010/03/01/al-gore-is-not-responsible-for-those-alleged-global-warmicides/
“After a year’s worth of unhinged lefties blaming conservative bloggers, pundits, and activists for every crime spree on the planet, it would be just desserts to blame Al Gore for the alleged global warming-inspired murders reported in the UK Daily Mail today. But count me out of that game…
“Al Gore is responsible for enough fraud and misery without overreaching and laying this strange case at his feet.
“Leave the hysterical smear-mongering to Frank Rich, Andrew Sullivan, Paul Krugman, and Keith Olbermann.”’

  20. Ouchboy,

Paragraphs are your friend. Please make yourself acquainted with them.

  21. “Ouchboy,

Paragraphs are your friend. Please make yourself acquainted with them.”

    Ouch! :-)

  22. Thanks Al. That’s the famous “Bikini Chart”.
There is a difference between the two graphs shown of course. The “Bikini Chart” is based on real data while the second one; as far as can tell; adds on rosy estimates from the Obama administration on top of the factual graph.
Gee politicians giving out projections that support their case: wow, that’s news!
The author did say, however, that the stimulus package was one of the main reasons for the decrease in unemployed under Obama.
    Thanks for sharing.

  23. – Paragraphs are your friend. –

Get the feeling Ouchie and Harry1420 were ‘separated’ at birth? Only..without..a.return..or.a..tab…

  24. We weren’t trying to mock Ouchboy, but we (one in particular) have a distinct loathing for dense, neverending paragraphs.

Maybe we’re just old and cranky, but we prefer shorter paragraphs, with lots of white (or in the case of ICN, black) space between and around them.

  25. – we prefer shorter paragraphs –

I think I can safely pull a ”we” on that one, as well. Paragraphs clarify thoughts. At the very least they give the illusion of intelligence that we all seek. Unending word-blocks are very easy to skip over, as they come across as a rambling rant.

  26. Normal sized paragraphs make big ideas (or at least longwinded ones) digestible by breaking them into smaller parts that can be read, comprehended and if necessary, thought over before moving on.
