Misleading headlines…

The Independent’s Stephen Foley has this breathtaking headline “CNN considers big changes to fight back in ratings war” followed by this lead paragraph…

CNN, the pioneering 24-hour news channel, is considering an overhaul of its schedule after haemorrhaging viewers in its core United States market.

This is followed by exactly zero evidence to support said headline or lead paragraph. No quotes from CNN. No anonymous quotes from CNN. Not even “sources say”. To quote an infamous Wendy’s commercial, “Where’s the beef?”. If you’re going to assert CNN is considering to make “big changes” or “overhaul” its programming you owe it to your readers to show what, where, and how and not write about crummy ratings and the changing cable news primetime landscape.

CNN may indeed be mulling changes. But don’t look to this article for what they are. Because it doesn’t say. It just throws out the allegation and then leaves it twisting in the wind. Even The New York Post wouldn’t go this route…

  1. Lets see — CNN pushes at least 10 hours of the following per week:

Kyra Phillips, Tony Harris, Ali Velshi, Rick Sanchez, Wolf Blitzer.

Campbell Brown is a joke along with Larry King. John Roberts needs to be taken off the morning program and moved to an hour where he can help the product. (I was thinking hard news, not morning fluff.) And AC360 has been hurting ever since they expanded the program to two hours.. regardless of whether the second hour is canned or not.

That said, the above “crew” that anchors 10 hours+ per week are unremarkable at best. Would it be asking too much for CNN to at least put “likeable” anchors on?

  2. Hillary’s dissent video is the misleading headline. All CNN does is shape the Average Americans Dissent as Violent “The Tea Partys” who does CNN think is NOT watching anymore? When Code Pink is covered by CNN, they are not shaped into “Violent” movement. How is Code Pink being covered for their behavior toward Karl Rove an FNC contributor? It’s like crickets. Bias much CNN?

Where is the violence of the TEA PARTY? Where is the video and the arrest by the authorities? CNN want’s to pander to the current administration, instead of objective journalism. Than they shouldn’t be surprised when they shed viewers.

Hillary stated “Dissent is Patriotic” and CNN covered it and lauded her position….now Average Americans are doing the same, and they are getting – called teabaggers, racist, violent…but NOT patriotic.

  3. People still watching CNN?

If we want condescending, anti-American, anti-Israel TV, we’d tune in to BBC. Or Al Jazeera.

  4. “Would it be asking to much to ask CNN to at least put “likeable” anchors on.”
I hear this complaint about replacing CNN hosts/anchors with ‘likable’ or ‘better’ or ‘high profile’ new talent but there is never any suggestion as to who this talent is or where they can acquire these anchors. Care to suggest some examples of new improved hosts that CNN could get?

  5. fritz, anyone from CNNI excluding Richard Quest.

  6. Common Terance I love Ricard Quest. :-)

  7. Why is AC360 constantly referred to as a two-hour show? It’s one hour, followed by a rerun of that hour.

  8. Remi – because its listed as a 2 hour block on all television listings.
