CNN’s Roberts/Phillips headache…
The the recently announced engagement of CNN’s John Roberts to CNN’s Kyra Phillips, a question is now presented for their network: can a married couple live and work in separate parts of the country? Roberts works in New York City, Phillips in Atlanta. CNN could afford to have things remain the status quo with the duo while they were dating. But marriage is another matter entirely. Something will probably have to give and one will probably have to move. The question is which one? A corollary question is will one lose their show as a result? There have been persistent rumors of an impending shake-up for American Morning involving the front line talent so maybe Roberts will move to Atlanta? Moving Phillips presents a problem because her shift immediately follows American Morning and that presents hand off issues for the New York studio/set. This could be overcome by moving her shift to another time period however. Time for a poll question…

One site reports that Nancy Grace of CNN doesn’t live with her husband or her kids either. Sounds like there was an “arrangement” made prior to her husband agreeing to marry Nancy after she was served lawsuit papers about a death of a victim she is alleged to have caused. And, the supposive “marriage” is only a smokescreen to avoid further ridicule of Nancy by the other media outlets for being pregnant before she was ever married. Plus, those twins are said to have been purchased from a donor that was paid, not of her husbands. The children appear to have suffered fetal-alcohol syndrome effects and will likely be in treatment for a long time.

I’m so tempted to take he obvious cheap shot. But I won’t…

Good move icn2, cause at least Nancy can still manage her alcohol and drug-usage issues (sometimes) while maintaining employment, even though she returns to therapy quite often.

While I hardly watch CNN at all at this point, I believe that neither of these two have programs with stellar ratings. So it probably doesn’t even matter whether either of them move, or get cancelled, or whatever.
And with satellite technology what it is, couldn’t either host be brought in from either location? The Fox people seem to be televised from New York or Washington at various times, with very little notice or distraction to the viewer.

with today’s technology where the show originates wouldn’t matter. a show in nyc can still be produced in atlanta. that’s the beauty of cnn technology. whats on the prompter in nyc can be pulled up in atlanta..and vice versa.

It does matter to a certain extent however in this case. Say Roberts moves to Atlanta and does American Morning remotely from there. That will affect the chemistry of the show. Say Phillips moves to NYC. Then you need to have a set available that doesn’t lower the quality bar vs. the rest of CNN’s dayside newscasts. That means using the main NYC set for American Morning. Having Phillips take over immediately after American Morning from NYC is problematic. I think they’d have to move her shift. That would cause look issues as the NYC set is not quite the same theme as the new Atlanta set.

I’m unsure why CNN needs to do anything. Roberts and Phillips chose this path and lots of people live apart during the week and hook up on the weekend.
That said, if CNN wants to appease these two.. Perhaps they’d move Phillips to NY to replace Chetry. Because moving Roberts to Atlanta makes no sense.

I always had a feeling that Kyra would move to NY – either to replace Kiran on AMERICAN MORNING or do her hour of CNN NEWSROOM from there. They have no issues handing off the different programs live when broadcasting from Atlanta, so I don’t think they’d have any problem doing the same in New York. If Kyra was from the standard NY liveshot location they would definitely have no issue, but I hope they would utilize the large studio if her hour of NEWSROOM would move there.
