This is a decline for cnn? Nope. Only strengthens its news gathering operations. Makes the people out in the field work harder and take more pride in their work. Wire services are for the lazy news operations. They don’t have to work for the story…just rip and read. They pay a fee to have the news delivered to them. Now CNN wants to do their own work. They already have the infrastructure in place…just means job security for its reporters and news gatherers.

As a reporter and former copy editor, it’s something I don’t agree with. There is a lot of great stuff we get off the AP that we would have missed otherwise — not because our staff is incompetent but because having a second person digging usually means they’ll find something you missed and visa versa.
There is a lot of news in Washington broken by the AP as well as a lot of domestic news, simply because the AP has reporters where CNN would never dream to send them. Places like Little Rock, Charleston, Sacramento, San Diego, Salt Lake City, and Austin – they all have AP bureaus, there’s no CNN presence.
And if they don’t have bureaus in those cities, phones at an affiliated newspaper will be ringing off the hook for content to feed the wire.
I guarantee CNN is just going to stop buying the AP service, but if you think that CNN’s assignment editors aren’t going to be looking at the AP feeds on MSNBC or the NYTimes, you’re crazy.
