Phil Griffin at the TCA…

Adam Buckman writes on Fancast.com about Phil Griffin’s appearance today at the TCA…(via J$)

But Griffin says he’s more focused on MSNBC’s own lineup changes in prime time – the cable TV home of Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann – than CNN’s. MSNBC is spending the summer getting its new 10 pm show – “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” – ready for its premiere Sept. 27.

“I’m not going to worry about them,” he said of CNN. “I’ve got enough troubles for myself. I recognize that they’re going to do everything they can to come back at us. They’ve been too successful and they have too much revenue at stake not to.

“But, that said, we have a vision. We have a real sense of who we are. Everything we do has a lens that it goes through, and Lawrence [O'Donnell] fits through that lens,” Griffin said.

NewsBusters’ Rich Noyes writes about Anderson Cooper admitting he should have challenged Shirley Sherrod when she called Andrew Breitbart a “racist”…

On Thursday’s Anderson Cooper 360, anchor Anderson Cooper faulted himself for not pressing Shirley Sherrod when she appeared on the show back on July 22 and claimed that conservative Andrew Breitbart was a “vicious” racist who “would like to get us stuck back in the times of slavery.”

Cooper now says he should have challenged Sherrod to support such an inflammatory charge with facts: “I believe in admitting my mistakes….I didn’t challenge her that night and I should have.”

Liza McGuirk Named Executive Producer of CNN’s 8 PM Program Set to Launch this Fall

Liza McGuirk has been named Executive Producer of CNN’s new 8 pm program with co-hosts Eliot Spitzer and Kathleen Parker set to launch this fall. The announcement was made by senior vice president of programming Bart Feder and is effective immediately.

“Liza has the experience producing quality television that is smart and informative, and she has the editorial muscle to develop a program that will be provocative and entertaining,” said Feder.

Most recently, McGuirk has been the executive producer of CNN’s Sunday morning news and discussion program Fareed Zakaria: GPS. Launching that program in June 2008, she has produced a one-of-a-kind public affairs program on cable news. Nominated for an Emmy after just months on the air, the Zakaria program led by McGuirk has provided intelligent and insightful programming about domestic and international issues.

GPS Producer Tapped to Helm Spitzer/Parker Show?

Posted in CNN on July 29, 2010 by icn2

New York Mag’s Gabriel Sherman scoops that CNN will tap veteran CNNer Liza McGuirk to helm it’s new 8pm ET Spitzer/Parker show…

McGuirk’s hiring affirms that Klein wants the Spitzer-Parker show to feature highbrow discussion, perhaps to avoid criticism that he’s putting a shoutfest like Crossfire back on the air.

That’s what worries me. This isn’t shaping up to be another version of Crossfire or another form of MSNBC/FNC’s talking head programs. It’s going to be Jonathan Klein’s re-imagined version of MSNBC/FNC’s talking head programs. In other words, it’s shaping up to be the Anti-Crossfire Crossfire; a show that debates issues like Crossfire but without the histrionics. And that kind of format given today’s prime time cable news landscape may doom the show from the outset.

A “cheeky” Jim Rogers appeared earlier on CNBC Europe (which incidentally is orders of magnitude better than its US equivalent), and confirmed the depths to which the once relevant and informative TV station has now fallen. In a discussion over the European Stress BS, the topic turned to the role of PR agencies when it comes to shaping popular perceptions, at which point this slipped: “The whole purpose of PR is to make stocks go higher. That’s what CNBC and many many PR agencies are all about. Yes, they make things look better for a while. Are they really better? No.”

NEW YORK—July 28, 2010—MSNBC and Ebony Magazine are partnering up in August to put education issues in the forefront of the nation’s spotlight. Beginning August 9, MSNBC will feature twice-daily segments focusing on a variety of pertinent education issues, including the central challenges facing our public school systems today, the benefits of charter schools versus traditional public schools and how to improve the quality of our school systems on a national level.

The partnership will culminate in a two-hour education special, “Making The Grade,” which will air on MSNBC on Sunday, August 15, beginning at noon ET. The special will ask the tough questions about the state of our nation’s education systems and will celebrate education methods that have a proven track record of making a positive difference for students and educators. In Depth: CNN Daytime Changes?

Posted in CNN on July 27, 2010 by icn2

TV by the Numbers posts some numbers for CNN and posits a question…

But CNN’s struggles aren’t just in primetime. Below are the monthly 25-54 averages by cable news network for 2010 for both primetime and total day. For four out of seven months of 2010, CNN has trailed MSNBC in the advertising-focused 25-54 demographic when it comes to the total day period. Can it be long before CNN is announcing changes outside of primetime, too?

First of all CNN already made changes this year with its dayside on air staffing. Secondly, and more importantly, MSNBC creeping up on CNN in Total Day is belied by the fact that MSNBC dayside is still not doing well with 4th place finishes dominating its dayside Demo. Ergo, whatever is causing MSNBC to gain ground on CNN, and even pass it on occasion, in Total Day’s Demo isn’t because of daytime programming. The gain is coming from elsewhere, perhaps primetime and other non-dayside hours. So we should be looking closer at pre-prime programming (Rick’s List, The Situation Room, John King, USA), overnight programming, and weekends. We already know that John King, USA is not doing well and today we learned that Rick’s List is way off as well…

The daytime program to decline the most year-to-year for CNN was Rick’s List, down 49% and 51% in total viewers and demo. Of course, Rick Sanchez is now hosting CNN’s 8pmET show too.

And The Ed Show beat The Situation Room in the Demo…

“The Ed Show” drew more viewers than CNN at 6 p.m. for the fifth consecutive month (633,000 vs. 521,000). “The Ed Show” also topped CNN in the 25-54 demographic (157,000 vs. 150,000).

From my vantage point, if the numbers posted by TV by the Numbers suggest a Total Day Demo erosion for CNN vs. MSNBC, it is the 3-8pm ET block in combination with a still sagging primetime that’s the main reason for the erosion.

But will there be a near term change? Doubtful. Given that the 3-8 block is relatively new and CNN doesn’t have a documented history of making quick hair trigger changes, unlike say MSNBC for example, I think CNN will ride this out and see what happens. Too much is being banked on with 3-8 to alter it this soon. To do so would open up a new round of articles questioning CNN’s programming decision making, talent choices, and overall leadership. And that would likely result in a change at the top of the network.

The key still remains primetime. If CNN can stabilize that, it will take a lot of the pressure off Total Day.

CNBC July Numbers: Not Good?

Streetinsider.com posts some disturbing numbers for CNBC…

According to data from Nielsen Media Research, CNBC has lost viewership during every hour long block during the prim market news hours from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm EDT, with the biggest overall drop seen during the network’s “Mad Money” show featuring Jim Cramer.

The eccentric investor’s hour-long show starting at 6:00 pm lost 25 percent of its total viewer year-over-year in July, from 188,000 to 141,000, while its key demographic of viewers age 25-54 fell 24 percent for the show.

Morning Show Battle: Ratings vs. Publicity…

Posted in CNN, HLN, MSNBC on July 27, 2010 by icn2

It’s interesting looking at the morning show battle between HLN, MSNBC, and CNN (forget about FNC which is way out in front of all three). There’s really two battles going on here: a ratings battle and a branding battle…

The branding battle is more clear cut. MSNBC has Morning Joe which is aimed at the Washington D.C. crowd and gets nice write ups in the MSM about how influential it is. HLN has Morning Express which is more or less built around Robin Meade and her personality – you remove Meade from that chair and the show loses its identity. CNN has American Morning which is a straight newscast.

None of the three appear to be in direct competition with one another in as much as where their branding takes them. CNN and MSNBC appear to be in more direct competition because American Morning’s daily coverage frequently enters into the political territory that Morning Joe has staked its claim to. And there’s not much intersection at all between Morning Express and Morning Joe but some intersection between Morning Express and American Morning as both cover the news.

But in the ratings battle things become more muddled. Morning Express has beaten Morning Joe in the demo for 16 months straight. There was a time, years ago, when HLN wasn’t a player in the mornings. Not anymore. Morning Joe may be getting all the press but Morning Express is getting the viewers. What’s going on with American Morning and its numbers is less clear. We know that last month Morning Joe beat American Morning in Total Viewers because MSNBC said so but where it came out in the Demo ranking is not obvious. But Morning Joe also lost to Morning Express in the Demo because CNN said so.

Morning Joe’s audience appears to be getting older – it tops CNN in Total Viewers but loses to HLN in the Demo – which is not something MSNBC wants to see. But it is getting more buzz in the MSM as the “Morning Show of Washington D.C. power players” which is something the network does want to see. Morning Express is going strong in the Demo continuing its domination of Morning Joe which HLN loves. But it is not generating the equivalent level of MSM love that Morning Joe gets which must drive HLN crazy. American Morning seems to be trending sideways – its ratings direction is muddled with Morning Joe frequently beating it in Total Viewers – and it’s not generating much MSM love either…the worst of both worlds.

David Asman Profile…

Posted in FBN on July 26, 2010 by icn2

Wall St. Cheat Sheet’s Damien Hoffman has a pretty good profile of FBN’s David Asman…

Damien: What has been the biggest development since you joined Fox in ’97?

David: The major shift here from ‘97 until now was the emergence of Fox Business in 2007.

Damien: Right before the crash.

David: Talk about baptism by a fire. It was terrible from a business standpoint but wonderful from the journalistic standpoint because there was so much to talk about.

I love the amount of input everyone has here. It’s like the beginning of Microsoft or Apple — very entrepreneurial. Roger is involved. Rupert is involved. They think so far out of the box that they very often keep their competition guessing.

Everybody knows Roger is a genius when it comes to programming. So, people look very closely at what we’re doing — not necessarily because they think tomorrow we’re going to overtake them in the numbers, but because they know eventually we could …
