MSNBC’s “Lean Forward” Campaign…

MSNBC put out a release concerning its Lean Forward ad campaign…

MSNBC SET TO LAUNCH NEW BRAND CAMPAIGN OCTOBER 11th

Lean Forward: An Invitation To Viewers – And The Nation – To Advance The Issues

Spike Lee Directed Ads Air On All Network Platforms

NEW YORK – Oct. 5, 2010 – Building on the most successful period in MSNBC history, including solidifying the network’s ratings strength over CNN, MSNBC is launching a comprehensive branding initiative. The brand platform will be built around the new network vision Lean Forward, which captures the network’s mission to become a thought-leader brand dedicated to advancing the issues that move America ahead. The announcement was made today by Phil Griffin, President of MSNBC.

Launching on October 11, the brand evolution will be supported by an aggressive advertising campaign, including out of home, online, print, and off-channel components. One element includes a series of television ads directed by academy award winner Spike Lee. The advertising campaign, featuring MSNBC anchors, will run on all platforms of the network, including msnbc.com.

“In its simplest form, it’s a tagline. You will see it on-air, in promotions and in advertisements,” said Griffin. “In the broader sense, however, Lean Forward captures the spirit of everything we do and everything we believe. It’s about celebrating the best ideas, no matter where they come from; that tomorrow can, in fact, be better than today. Lean Forward is our message.”

Lean Forward encompasses the sensibility represented in all parts of the network, including breaking news coverage, thought-provoking conversation, fresh political analysis, and award-winning documentary programs. The effort represents the first comprehensive branding strategy since the network launched in 1996 and will be supported by the largest ad campaign in network history.

“MSNBC wants to be the champion for those who believe in progress,” said Sharon Otterman, Chief Marketing Officer and Vice President of MSNBC. “Lean Forward captures the cultural momentum for progress that resonates strongly with our audience. We’re not just creating advertisements. We are building a stronger consumer brand that differentiates us from the competition and prepares us for future growth.”

MSNBC has topped CNN in primetime for four consecutive quarters among both A25-54 and total viewers. For the third quarter of 2010, MSNBC beat CNN in total day for the first time since 2001 in the key adult demographic and is the only cable news network to grow in total day compared to the second quarter of 2010.

  1. “MSNBC wants to be the champion for those who believe in progress.”

Unless your opinion of progress differs from ours, in which case we will belittle you personally in a thoroughly childish and unprofessional manner.

If our hosts disagree with your opinions, they will simply infer you to be racist, sexist, homophobic, and/or insane.

It says a lot about what a bottomless hole MSNBC used to be, because even after “the most successful period” in the network’s history, Fox regularly doubles or triples them in the ratings.

And THAT’S why Big Ed wasn’t invited to be part of the campaign!

  3. thought-leader brand

Yeah, that doesn’t sound at all corporate and creepy.

“Compared to Fox News getting teabagged by Glenn Beck’s gang of paranoid misfits,”

Huh? What does that even mean? I can’t imagine it means anything. It seems as if you reached into a hat full of words lefties love, and randomly put them together.

  7. Huh? What does that even mean?

Um, Lonestar… don’t act dumb. Fox News has promoted the hell out of the tea parties, Glenn Beck is, obviously, the tea party leader in the media. Are you unable to figure out the connection there? Try and keep up next time, buddy.

“Um, Lonestar… don’t act dumb. Fox News has promoted the hell out of the tea parties, Glenn Beck is, obviously, the tea party leader in the media. Are you unable to figure out the connection there? Try and keep up next time, buddy.”

Those are your opinions but it doesn’t change the fact that the sentence you wrote at 12:19 makes absolutely ZERO sense. It’s a mixed up bag of words lefties use with a comma at the end. Can you even explain what it means? I don’t think you can. Actually, I know you can’t.

  9. PL, I know we generally agree politically, and LS and I don’t, but he’s right about your teabagger comment. It doesn’t make a lick of sense. I could do without the antiquated “teabagger” reference, too. Also, Sarah Palin is the Queen Bee of the Tea Party. Glenn Beck is her delusional lap dog.

  10. No, LS, those aren’t opinions. Those are the facts. Watch Fox’s coverage of the tea parties. Anybody with a brain can see their overwhelming support for the movement. Even their advertising of the subsequent tea parties on tax day were fawning. That’s all fine and dandy, but I’m just pointing out their agenda.

As far as explaining my initial comment, I don’t really have the time to spell it out. If you don’t know what being “teabagged” means, then look it up in a slang dictionary. But, it all goes back to Fox’s fawning coverage of the tea parties where they over promoted the hell out of it. Hence, they are being teabagged. It’s a joke… figure it out.

And, JR, I know Palin is the queen bee of the tea party, but I see Beck as the main leader in the media for them. Sarah is the queen bee as far as politicians go (if we can still consider her one).

  11. – teabagged. It’s a joke… –

And so original. And funny. About as funny as ‘The Anointed One’.

  12. Point taken, laura. It’s not exactly clever, but an easy shot to take when you bring up tea parties and whatnot. I’ll admit it’s childish, though. :)

  13. ‘Childish’ has its place. The Hannity-comparison might’ve been a low blow, however. :-(
