The fact that it’s Karl Rove will lead to many liberals dismissing him but Rove is absolutely right to complain about the President – the President! – accusing Americans of illegal activity. Based on unsubstantiated claims made by partisans.
This is really a terrible, terrible decision by the President. No President – of any party – should get into the gutter to go after the opposition. This is what the Vice President or other surrogates are supposed to do.
I simply can’t believe that a President would do this. I don’t care what party. It’s just making him appear small and petty. I didn’t vote for Obama and don’t care too much for his policies. But he’s still my President. And this is just beneath the office.
Thanks for posting a free-for-all to note this special date, Spud.
My kids returned from a camping trip with their church youth group this morning, and their goofy (and wonderful) youth minister insisted that they leave the camp site at exactly 10 minutes, 10 seconds after 10:00 on 10/10/10. Wow. That’s a lot of 10s.
I have been blissfully cable-news free all weekend, but have unfortunately been witness to my son’s high school team, my college alma mater, and our local pro football teams all lose – badly… yes, there are some things more depressing than what’s on tv these days…
We won’t know until well after the election where Rove and the CoC money came from so you may be right. Even so I have no problem with the POTUS or anyone who wants to attacking the practice.
If Rove and the CoC want to show us where the money came from they would have a case to make, but that’s not going to happen because they don’t want us to know. I expect it comes from a few right wing billionaires but who knows it could be China or Saudi Arabia for all we know.
I’m saving my outrage for Rove & the CoC. Get over it.
Notice, though, that when the President of the United States says something, people notice. Considering the importance of the issue, and Rove and CoC action’s conflict with the spirit of transparancy, I conclude that the Presidents statement is appropriate.
BW, you’re asking if I would like a person if they looked and acted like a different person. Impossible to answer. I like Courtney Freil in her capacity as an entertainment reporter and guest on Red Eye. I wouldn’t want her holding down a primetime news show, but nobody is proposing that.
What, may I ask, is all of this issue about liking people. I always thought that this was a positive virtue of humans, so long as it is respectful, considerate and definitely not base (not into that, though some do, so I’ll give an inch, not more). To me, each individual has their own criteria, based upon their own lifetime experiences. I’m not interested in lecturing, but, I’ll let you adore yours if you’ll let me adore mine.
Fair enough, Joe. Kind of funny that what you like and find endearing, both of us here find annoying, grating, and insulting to the intelligence of adults.
BWs, it’s nice to have you guys around again for this topic, and those are words I never thought would leave my typing fingers. Tough times in Joe World lately, and I’m quite enjoying babbling about Miss Courtney instead of another round of Whitman/Brown. Ugh.
I can handle the “meta” if you mean old timer experience, resulting in diplomacy, kindness and empathy as virtues. I’ll even accept “crazy” if you will mean it in a gentle way. I would prefer to translate meta into continuing to want to learn and to try to understand.
I’m astonished but not really surprised that some liberal apologists would countenance the President of the United States smearing fellow Americans based entirely on unbustantiated allegations by partisan individuals. This makes Nixon sound like George Washington.
To claim that these individuals have to prove their innocence – no presumption of innocence allowed – is unacceptable. Not acceptable at all.
David Zurawik, who voted for Obama, has the best word on these smears: “The politics of fear, slander and divisiveness” (the rest here: (The New McCarthyism).
The American people will speak in about a month and this type of thuggery will not stand.
I disagree, Steve. Republicans play hardball, and Democrats – including the President – have to fight back. The GOP is a bunch of bullies who scream NO! all the time. Suck it up.

When the President – Republican or Democrat – starts to smear other Americans based on unsubstantiated claims – that’s when the old saying that the country comes before the party is supposed to mean something.
This President has been savagely and unfairly treated by many on the right. And now he’s doing some of the same stuff.
stevemg, I have no intent to argue with your viewpoint. You have thought it out and it represents your belief. I would prefer, however, that since politicals are going to attack, especially during our lovely American tradition of election time, that the attacks be above board and not dirty jabs “under the table”, so to speak.
I take the position that I want the President to succeed, regardless of the political party in which they are affiliated. I just prefer that they act like responsible adults. President Obama talks openly to all sides, former President Bush prefered to only talk with his own audience. We can respect both, but, I prefer President Obama’s style.
Yeah, well in about a month partisan hacks who put their ideology above the country and who talk about “Jew money” buying candidates will be shown the door.

Sorry, this isn’t about “talking to all sides”. This is smearing people.
When the President – Obama or Bush or Nixon or Washington or whomever – accuses Americans of crimes based on unsubstantiated claims and then the President’s top adviser states that those being accused have to prove their innocence (!) – that’s when I’m say enough.
If this had been a Republican President accusing Carville or Begala or the AFL-CIO of this, I’d be just as displeased.
And so would, I might add, a lot of people defending the President.
“Yeah, well in about a month partisan hacks who put their ideology above the country and who talk about “Jew money” buying candidates will be shown the door.”

Lame try. Those who are screeching about “Jew money” are the Dems.
Yes, there are anti-semites on both sides, but you have to dig further on the right than the left to find them these days.

Mediaite has the inexplicable Amy Fisher appearance on Geraldo that Laura mentioned. I haven’t watched it yet. That’s gonna take a strong stomach.
October 10, 2010 at 4:22 pm
Obama warned about foreign money coming into our election cycles because of the idiot Supreme Court. He’s right to stay on the attack about it.
BW, the Courtney video was cute. She was apparently referencing a song of his. Lighten up.
October 10, 2010 at 4:45 pm
As usual, she had to put the attention on herself. And he didn’t look too comfortable with being asked to evaluate her butt.
October 10, 2010 at 4:56 pm
I know I know. I don’t care. She’s cute, she’s sweet, it was a lighthearted moment with a country singer on a morning show, and I like her. Sue me.
October 10, 2010 at 4:59 pm
Would you like her if she were a little better than average in appearance and not so overtly sexual/flirtatious in her presentation?

Fred is just too meta for us.
October 10, 2010 at 5:20 pm
Fred is one of the more intriguing human beings to grace our lowly presence. Given some of our previous visitors, the improvement is noteworthy.

Joe, we’re both sorry to hear that you’re going through a rough time, and hope it gets better very soon.
Sometimes distracting yourself with inane stuff (like debating Fox News airheads) is helpful in dealing with rough times.
Fred, we meant nothing negative.

In less than four weeks, these type of smears and character assassination will be answered.
Good riddance to bad trash.
