Soledad O’Brien Interview…

The New York Daily News’ Richard Huff interviews CNN’s Soledad O’Brien about her upcoming “Almighty Debt” documentary…

Black churches have always been different than others, says CNN’s Soledad O’Brien.

And never have those differences been more pronounced than during the economic crisis.

“As much as it’s bad for everybody, it’s devastating for the black community,” O’Brien says.

That’s the clear message throughout “Almighty Debt,” a 90-minute documentary airing Thursday at 9 p.m. on CNN. The show is the latest in her “Black in America” series.

    NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I read the title, I thought, Thank God, Soledad is FINALLY reporting on something not related to race!

However, my hope was short-lived, as I read the very next word of the following sentence, “Black….”

I’m sorry, but where would this woman be if she was not a minority? Has she EVER reported on anything of impact to the population in general? And while she constantly garners awards of different types, they are always related to her ethnicity.

Maybe she is a good reporter/anchor/whatever; who knows? But virtually everything I’ve ever read about her calls attention to her ethnicity, more than her abilities.

  2. Gonna have to agree with Missy on this one. Long before I was alerted to her race (sorry, I didn’t know what it was), I thought she was a fine news reporter. I don’t begrudge her desire to work on ethnic issues, but the way she has allowed – or encouraged – CNN to pigeonhole her as “the girl that talks about race” the last few years is annoying. I liked her when she was just “Soledad O’Brien, reporter for CNN”.

  3. It’s like Rick Sanchez. Who knew he was ‘Cuban’ before he exhibited the continent-size chip on his shoulder on the subject? How much of what is labeled ‘racism’ is just people who refuse to live-and-die on their own abilities, and choose to blame it on something else. But I digress…

  4. And I think I lost a question mark back there. Oh well.

  5. Missy & Joe have you watched any of her specials? They aren’t all that bad even if the subject matter is race. There is a POV but it’s not slapping you in the face.

I suppose they could get Kiran Chetry to do it because shes white but I don’t think the show would be any better.

  6. Yes, her specials are well done. That’s my point: she’s just good. Give her something to do besides this one topic. A show at 8:00 weekdays might be nice..

  7. ^O’Brian/Spitzer???

  8. ^ For the love of God, noooo..
