What’s on your mind?

  1. Loved the blow-up between LOD + Greenwald (from Salon) on MJ this morning. It seemed like a bit of a reprise of what happened on Dylan Ratigan show yesterday. There’s a lot of liberal anger out there and now they are turning on their own. Reminds me of what happened with conservatives in 2008. Let the games begin!!

  2. MSNBC has just hired a new Vice President in charge of ethics for the network.

Here she (yes, a woman) is preparing to meet Keith Olbermann:
    Ethics?, You betcha’.

No, I won’t quit my day job.

  3. I am quickly tiring of the charges of ‘sexism’ from women in politics, and the advocates thereof. Everyone in politics gets dumped-on. If some of the ‘dumping’ keys-off the fact that you’re female..tough. Yes, there are egregious examples that should be pointed-out, but most of it is just silly. Late-night-comedians are going to make off-color jokes. Deal with it or move on.

  4. ^ I have a particular – and particularly politically incorrect – pet peeve about “sexism”. If you’re good looking – and chances are you’re popular with the public patially based on that criteria – I don’t care if people comment on it. There’s a point at which it becomes offensive, but, in general, being considered “hot” has more positives than negatives, so get over your hot self.

  5. Wow. MSNBC indefinitely suspending Olbermann? They would never have done this if he was still 1/2 of the primetime lineup.

  6. ^ What are the chances he resists the urge to storm out? This is the longest he’s held a job..

  7. I just don’t get why MSNBC is doing this. They threw out standards on election night, why not in this case? I thought Olbermann ran the place. He complained when Scarborough dared to challenge him.

  8. lonestar77 Says:

    Steve:
    Sweet pic.

    Josh:
Great point. In the end, does it really matter that he donated to 3 dems. The guy is the biggest shill on TV. Between the giggles, hostility & openly mocking of members of Congress, I think the behavior of the MSNBC personalities on election night was worse than a monetary donation. I can’t say I’m not a wee bit happy about the news, though.

But, MSNBC had it coming. EVERYBODY knew something would happen sooner or later. It’s Keith Olbermann. He’s left a sh!t storm every place he’s worked. I honestly think the dude has some serious mental/psychological issues.

  9. Maybe this is Shuster’s big break. He can have Countdown. Trade one hack for another.

  10. And I don’t mean hack in a bad way. Shill might be the better word. Actually, no, hack is appropriate. And I do mean it in the bad way.

  11. Kos is not happy. Look at how they’re turning on MSNBC.

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/11/5/917893/-Olbermann-suspended-by-MSNBC

Back in the day when KO was rising, and we all began to realize what kind of nut he was… I said hitching your network to this one guy is a mistake. And then more recently, the Donny Deutsch thing happened, and I said “this is a problem, he’s got too much power over there.” And now this!

If Kos’s reaction is typical of the rest of the far left (and usually it is), this could spell doom for MSNBC. Yes, there are other programs… but there are a lot of folks who might say, “FU MSNBC,” and walk away. Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if Maddow made a “principled stand” and walked because of this.

This is what happens when you build a network hinging on one persona. It will eventually bite you in the butt.

  12. Sweet pic.

Not a Palin fan (politically) but she is quite impressive. Very low maintenance and I bet fun as hell. Fun is never overrated.

And if there’s a noise downstairs in the middle of the night, you can go back to sleep. She’ll handle it.

    Poor noise.

  13. lonestar77 Says:

Thanks for the link, INB. Derangement is the best term I can come up with to describe that ranting.

  14. starbroker Says:

FOX BUSINESS NETWORK CRUSHES CNBC ON ELECTION NIGHT!

Not bad for a channel thats in half the number of homes CNBC is in. And really great for a channel that’s a little more than 3 years old.

  15. lonestar77 Says:

    “Poor noise.”

Guess it all depends what you’re into.

BTW, I am a fan of hers (politically), though she wouldn’t be my choice for the GOP nominee…cuz I want to win in 2012.

But, enough about Palin, let’s get back to bashing Olby. It’s fun, easy, and never tiresome. Oh, and based on the way he’s treated others, this whole deal is gonna go 15 rounds with no TKO’s.

  16. starbroker Says:

Why is everyone bashing Olbermann? Why hasn’t Contessa Brewer been fired? You don’t give speeches (and probably money) to left wing gay causes and then get to report on them (as a “supposed’ straight news anchor).

Brewer gets away with that all the time and her extreme bias in the matter

  17. Olbermann can be partisan all day. What he can’t do is donate, then do story on recipient without disclosure. Journalism 101.

Interesting that Fox News website hasn’t touched this story. They know better than to draw attention to opposing hosts.

  18. More or less as I said would happen. He broke the rules and gets a suspension.

Props to NBC for not just saying he told them in advance. I have no problem with the suspension and it may lead to further action, I don’t know. Why he did such a stupid thing escapes me but, like Scarborough, he doesn’t have a lot of people at the network to speak up for him.

I expect they will put Cenk Uygur as host by next week. It will be a good chance to see how he does in a show that will be more geared to his talents. It will be interesting to see how the ratings pan out over the next few weeks.

I wonder if they will drop Olbermann from the title while he is away?

I think he will return; a lot will depend on how Cenk does: but you never know, look at Shuster.

BTW wasn’t Cenk supposed to do November in the Martin Bashir slot? I wonder how that works out. Who knows maybe if KO is gone for good they give Bashir a shot.

  19. “What he can’t do is donate,”

Actually, technically, he can; he just had to ask permission. He didn’t and he’s gone. Your never bigger than the network.

  20. Actually he has to ask and receive permission. If you ask and are denied that doesn’t give you an out when you go ahead and make a donation anyway.

  21. That true lalo; I stand corrected.

  22. wow, now salon.com is reporting Hannity gave $10,000.00 to Michelle Bachmann’s PAC. I don’t imagine there will be much fallout as FNC allows hosts to donate to politicians.
http://www.salon.com/news/politics/war_room/2010/09/23bachmann_hannity_donation Hope that was the correct URL

  23. – Hannity –

I would love to see him bouncing off his sanctimonious ass. Just give ‘em an excuse.

  24. I think URLs hate you.

  25. Oops, wasn’t finished. — It’s weird. I check your links just to see if they’re screwed -up. It’s a selling point.

  26. Hannity has too many staff members to do anything to get him fired. As for Olby, he has a history of leaving jobs under bad circumstances. I really don’t think this is an “indefinite suspension” offense. Then again, I thought MSNBC over-reacted to the Shuster thing.

Olby is a left-wing shill. What exactly is surprising here? I get that NBC News has standards, but last time I checked those standards are only loosely applied to MSNBC (see election night coverage, rude interview w/ Bachman, mocking John Boehner.). This seems to pale in comparison to the disgraceful showing on election night.

  27. Fritz, you took me a little out of context there. My issue is the donation without the disclosure. If he wants to tell his viewers, “My next guest is someone I support so strongly, I have donated to his campaign,” then I don’t think any of this becomes an issue.

  28. lonestar77 Says:

Regarding Hannity, get back to me when he is the lead anchor of an election coverage newscast. As Salon notes, he was the keynote speaker at some Republican something or other. Hannity promotes the fact that he’s all GOP. This is why FNC would never have him anchor election coverage. Olby always claimed to be a news person conducting a news show. NBC chose him to be the lead anchor in their election coverage. Apples & oranges.

  29. Sorry Jwe; I thought you meant disclosure to NBC, not his viewers.
This is only an issue because he didn’t get permission from NBC. I don’t think he legally had to inform his viewers although that would be smart as it was always going to get out. Most of his viewers wouldn’t care who he donated to anyway as long as it was a liberal. ;-)

  30. savefarris Says:

How awesome is it that Olbermann’s last tweet uses the word ‘Suspensed’ in a completely different context?

  31. Totally agree with Lonestar about Hannity. I just can’t miss an opportunity for a shot, cheap or otherwise. KO should be bagged for being nutty enough for thinking that he does ‘news’. I really can’t begin to care who he gives his money to.

  33. “Regarding Hannity, get back to me when he is the lead anchor of an election coverage newscast.”

LS: It doesn’t matter. It could have been Megyn Kelly or Bret Baier who donated and they could still appear as election hosts. FNC has no rule forbidding it. Hannity had every right to donate money to Bachmann or support her in other ways and so does everyone else on FNC. He could also host election coverage on Fox if that’s what Alies wanted.

KO broke a NBC rule and now gets to pay the price.

  34. lonestar77 Says:

I lost about 3.5 minutes of my life reading “the arena” over at Politico. Without exception, every lefty commentator basically said, “yeah, but NewsCorp blah, Republicans, blah, $1 Biiiiiilion. Someone remind these yahoos that GE also contributes to political candidates. Hell NBC actively promoted Obama’s green initiatives because they stood to make a ton of money from it. Olby could have kicked anyone of those lefties dogs in the face and they would have said, yeah, but Glenn Beck would have kicked him twice!

  35. lonestar77 Says:

Maybe they could have fritz, but there’s no evidence that they actually did. Besides, the point is that FNC wouldn’t put a foaming-at-the-mouth hyper partisan in the anchor chair during election coverage. As I stated earlier, these donations are the least of MSNBC’s problems when it comes to “journalistic standards”.

  36. Fritz, I’m not sure how you know what FNC’s rules are, but Hannity’s contrib to that PAC was made public, and Fox specifically noted in their statement that he was a talk show host. Not a news anchor, reporter, or election night anchor.

  37. J$ I got them from the article linked to by the Politico story. I didn’t say it was a secret or that it was wrong; I said I had no problem with them. I just linked to the story because it’s on the same subject matter.

If Hannity broke a rule at FNC and didn’t get disciplined, because of who he was, that would be wrong.

It’s nice to see that if KO had not hosted the election coverage you would have been OK with the donations because he’s just a talk show host too. ;-)

  38. This solves my ‘can’t watch Countdown anymore’ problem. Oh wait…it’s Chris Hayes? Never mind. NASCAR Trucks on tonight. I’ll be fine. ;-)

  39. lonestar77 Says:

^Read somewhere that it won’t be Hayes.

    Maybe it’ll be Alan Grayson.

  40. I know it’s not Hayes permanently, Texas. He’s subbing tonight.

  41. NO he’s not. Apparently some bloggers found all sorts of contributions to Dems from Hayes, and NBC announced it won’t be Hayes tonite.

The obvious choice is Larry O’D. He’s not on at 10 anyhow.

  42. lonestar77 Says:

I was just speaking about tonight, Joe. And, I was kidding about Grayson.

  43. CNN is in full “KO Crisis” mode. Weird.

  44. Apparently some bloggers found all sorts of contributions to Dems from Hayes,

When this controversy finally blows over, Olbermann won’t be the only one either out of a job or sitting on the sidelines. This is going to take a few others down (or sidelined).

Every news organization is going to have to re-visit its policies on this one. Either voluntarily or by exposure.

Soros (among others) better get his checkbook out.

  46. Beck spins a tale of imminent worldwide meltdown, while QVC sells popcorn for $37. There are no words.

Can I assume I needed to have watched Beck today to understand this? You know there’s not a chance in hell I did that, so, if you could..

  47. Now, if Limbaugh would retire then we’d be about 2/3s of the way to meeting Jon Stewart’s sanity restoration goals.

Throw in Ann Coulter and Michael Moore and we’re there.

  51. You shoulda watched, Joe. He had one of my favorite authors on.

If that’s a very sligh joke about Beck being an author who rarely has guests on his show, then you’ve picked up Laura’s sneaky sense of humor. Being that it’s unlikely anybody could duplicate that phenomenon, I’m going to assume he had an author on you like that, for some reason, you refuse to name..

  54. lonestar77 Says:

Want to see how much the hard left turn at MSNBC has changed Chris Mathews? This pretty much proves that either Chris made a huge turn towards hard-leftism/race-baiting, etc. or he’s a puppet trying to prove his worth to the MSNBC people.

    http://yidwithlid.blogspot.com/2010/11/when-chris-matthews-had-man-crush-on.html

  55. I was unduly impressed with O’Donnell admitting that liberalism is an absolute minority, and arguing it to someone who doesn’t grasp that basic concept.

    http://www.mediaite.com/online/glenn-greenwald-and-lawrence-odonnell-battle-over-midterm-message/

  56. I don’t know. Did Chris change that much, or did Beck? I didn’t listen to Beck back then (or watch Matthews), so I don’t know how much his focus may have changed. I don’t think GB was interviewing Brad Thor in ’05.

  57. lonestar77 Says:

Personally, I used to watch Mathews everyday. Now, hardly ever. I’m still the right-wing extremist I’ve always been. Limbaugh certainly hasn’t changed, yet Chris didn’t have anything negative to say about him. He seemed to agree with Beck that political correctness sucks and that Rush shouldn’t have been fired from ESPN. Also, Chris played the “but what if it was a liberal card” as he wondered if the media would have called the CA gov’s race a circus had it been a liberal who won instead of Ahnald. Chris isn’t 180 degrees from where he was but he’s pretty darn close. Nothing Beck said in that interview struck me as different from the Beck from today. As someone who used to watch Hardball everyday, the guy seems to get further & further left. I don’t know if it’s genuine but if you graphed it, it would mirror the MSNBC line.

  58. I used to like CM a lot, much as with O’Reilly. You appreciate someone that doesn’t agree with you all the time, but seems to have a basic fairness about them.
Chris always seemed to move left the closer he got to an election (going back maybe 10 years since I watched him). The advancing Bush-years seem to have progressively pushed him over-the-edge (for lack of a better term). All the ‘racist’ ‘bigot’ ‘phobic’ hoo hah seems fairly recent, and strictly in line with every liberal columnist out there.
He’s always been liberal, but not the doctrinaire-type. It’s a shame.

  59. lonestar77 Says:

Yeah, he’s always been a liberal but he used to have a decency about him. Now, if you chew your gum wrong you’re a racist. Still, I thought that interview was pretty amazing. It’s night & day from the Mathews of today. Today, a mention of Limbaugh’s name causes fire to come out of Chris’ nose. And, like I said, Limbaugh hasn’t changed.

  60. – Limbaugh hasn’t changed –

EXACTLY. It’s in line with the BS about how ”The Republican Party has moved so far to the Right..” Uh, no. It only seems that way when you won’t admit how far you’ve gone.

  61. It’s simple. Bush drove Matthews further left, and the Tea Party finished him off. It’s not an act to appease the boss. He got old and tired and fed up, and decided to stop trying to deal with the right. He’s sick of ‘em.

Before y’all crash down on me (bought a cool bike tonight, not in the mood), I’m doing analysis..not making a judgment about the “rightness” of his decision. I’m just telling you what I saw happen to him.

And don’t think constantly being harassed for “tingle” hasn’t played a part. Chris Matthews LOVES politics, and knows a political moment where politician and crowd rise together when he sees one, and reacted to it. It’s a shame the right constantly takes it out of context to humiliate him.

  62. The ‘tingle’-thing is stupid. I think we can all agree that the expiration date on ‘humor’ passes at some point short of two years. It’s lazy and juvenile.

  63. You have to understand something about CM. He worked for Tip O’Neill. An era where Tip and Reagan would fight like dogs during the day, then have a scotch and a cigar after work. A man who lived through that has a crazy woman advising an investigation of Congress to root out “unAmericans”. And the biggest star of the Tea Party is a pretty sportscaster who doesn’t know sh!t. It’ll get to ya..

  64. Poor thing. The world changes. We all get old. You don’t persuade people by acting every bit the fool that you portray your opponents to be. Screaming ‘racist’ won’t save us from President Palin. If anything, it increases the likelihood.

  65. And the growing mythology about Reagan and O’Neill…I have doubts.

  66. Reagan became friends with the leader of the Evil Empire. I absolutely believe he was friends with Tip.

  67. Screaming ‘racist’ won’t save us from President Palin. If anything, it increases the likelihood.

Don’t tag me with that. I don’t support it.

  68. Um, I believe we were discussing Chris Matthews.

  69. Uou responded to a commentary I made about him. I thought you were accusing me of agreeing with his tactics. Sorry.

  70. I don’t think Matthews has changed it’s just that MSNBC has changed and he is now permitted to express views that he couldn’t when the network had a more moderate POV under different leadership. He just wants to be like the other hosts on the network.

When Beck was with CNN he was not nearly the crazy he morphed into when he joined FNC. He could never do his current schick at CNN but at FNC he had to go to crazy town just to stand out.

Courses make horses so to speak.

  71. lonestar77 Says:

I’ve been listening to Beck for years, he’s the same guy he’s always been (IMO).

I know the reaction from the left (for everything) is to a) blame Bush & if that fails then, b) blame the tea party. But, you can’t blame them for Mathews following the yellow brick road to crazy town. The most striking part of that interview was that when Rush was brought up, Mathews didn’t bat an eye.

If calling Mathews, “tingles”, help to send him over the edge, well the whole world should be crazy cuz the dude calls someone an “idiot”, “lunatic”, “racist”, “extremist”, etc. every day.

This is a guy who actually said that it was his job to make sure Obama succeeds. Even Hannity would never say something like that.

I think he’s a fraud. I think he turned into a rabid lefty to try & keep up with the crazy that was going on around him at MSNBC. I think he’s playing to wingnuts. If Keith doesn’t come back, I could see Mathews becoming a little more sane.

  72. This is a guy (Matthews) who actually said that it was his job to make sure Obama succeeds. Even Hannity would never say something like that.

    ^Gee, Yeh think!!! :-)

  73. This is a guy (Matthews) who actually said that it was his job to make sure Obama succeeds.

That’s also taken out of context. Matthews has always felt that way about the President, and gave W. huge leeway for a long time. He had a problem with Rush saying he wanted Obama to fail.

  74. Your right Joe and he’s right to say that. No one should want the POTUS to fail. Having the POTUS succeed; no matter who it is; should be everyone’s goal.

  75. He ‘hoped’ that Obama would fail to do what he did that’s gotten us to where we are now. He Was Right.

  76. Y’all can debate Rush’s comment if you want, just don’t keep taking Matthews’ out of context.

  77. I’ll do my best.

  78. lonestar77 Says:

He said it was his job as a journalist, Joe. That’s not his job. That’s not out of context.
