Joe Scarborough Interview

Parade Magazine’s David Browne interviews Joe Scarborough…

Have there been moments–say, during the tax debate in December–when you wished you were back in Congress?

Not yet. I think I may at some point. We have more influence doing the show. There are 435 members of Congress. There’s one Morning Joe show. Hopefully, we can keep hammering the argument that you can disagree with other people and have debates but remain civil.

“At some point”? How seriously are you considering a return to politics?

My wife always tells people, “He’s not going to be able run to for anything because I’m not going to let him start a campaign.” Look what’s happened to Barack Obama over the last two years or George Bush for eight. It’s a blood sport. But at some point I may feel the need to run for office again.

What would make you?

An absence of leadership. The same thing that had me run the first time, in 1994, when I felt the country was veering off dangerously in the wrong direction. If Washington continues to fumble issues like taking care of the debt, getting the troops home, and rebuilding our economy, my wife and I may sit down and say, “These are critical things and maybe we need to get back in the ball.”

  1. He has (mostly) Ron Paul’s view of government. And Paul is, sorry for the lack of civility Mr. Scarborough, a nut.

I’m a conservative – sceptical of government – but I don’t go that far. Too conservative for me.

After all, he bashes Beck or Limbaugh for their rhetoric, not their public policy views.

  2. “Maybe not against a great Dem like Hillary, but I’d consider him against lesser ones.”

I think there’s zero chance he’ll run for national office. No money, no national name recognition, no base, and he has skeletons in the closet that have not been fully explored.

He might consider a run at statewide office in Florida but I doubt it.

  3. I like Joe, but he needs to stick to TV. He’s kind of expendable in a political race. I’d hate to see him run and get clobbered anyway.

He’s also a very friendly and kind person with a calm attitude. He’ll get passionate (like we all do), but he seems to be really devoted to civility, and I admire that.

He might come off as a d-bag most of the time, but it’s entertaining to see him like that.

  4. Wow…I think I set a record for the number of comments I had to delete just to get the acrimony and all the references to said acrimony out of the thread.

Joe and BW, put a cork in it. We all can tell you don’t get along. But take your pissing match elsewhere. If you’re going to comment here stick to the subject and not each other.

  5. When Spud needs to regulate on the comments, you can tell there’s certainly a war of words that shouldn’t be happening. I commend you on being lenient and regulating, though, Spud. Good karma for you. :)

  6. commend you on both*

  7. That ‘war’ happened because those people chased me all over this forum for a week. I apologize for nothing.

  8. Right. Because it’s a brave and noble thing to make up garbage and falsely accuse people, and then refuse to apologize for smearing others when proven wrong.

People with social skills know better.

  9. I said put a cork in it. It takes two to keep this going and right now you’re both not getting my hint. I don’t care who started it or who’s more to blame or who’s got more grievances. When I say it stops, it stops.

Knock it off both of you. Or else…

  10. Ok. Another time.

  11. I have a few more things to say on this matter having scanned some of the commments recently…

    1) Courtney Friel was NOT topless. Topless means nothing on top. Zilch. Nada. Zip. If she were topless you’d be seeing skin and not a string of lights. So Joe is right to argue that Friel was not topless. Deal with it.

Update: I wouldn’t use the term lying however.

    2) Not that I think that’s the kind of wardrobe FNC wants associated with it.

    3) I can see the game your playing BW concerning Joe. The subtle hints you’ve been dropping aren’t so subtle. Keep it up and you’ll make my decision on who I may have to block much much easier…

  12. Fair enough, Spud. But for the sake of accuracy, our problem with Joe is not with how much skin she was showing, but that he accused us of lying about her posting the photos herself, claiming that we made that up to make her look bad.

    That’s all.
