Monocle TV Comes to Bloomberg…

Posted in Bloomberg on December 6, 2010 by icn2

New York Magazine’s Amy Larocca in a profile of Monocle Magazine publisher Tyler Brule writes that Monocle will debut a new weekly show on Bloomberg TV…

But Monocle is not only the magazine. There’s Monocle radio, which offers up interviews with the Estonian prime minister live from Tallinn, and with the best Lebanese fashion designer working in Paris these days. There’s Monocle retail; there are now several Monocle stores around the world, including one that just popped up on Hudson Street. And starting December 18, there will be Monocle TV on the Bloomberg network. It’s a weekly hour of what Brûlé describes as “gentle, good, informative viewing” not unlike old episodes of 60 Minutes or even CBS’s retro Sunday Morning. The show will feature magazine-style reports from Monocle’s correspondents that are unhurried in tone. About it he says this: “I hope it will be a return to more elegant television.”

The key to comprehending the Brûlé philosophy is to understand it is developed chiefly via great enthusiasms. Monocle is not naïve about the world (though reading it, you could be excused for thinking the Japanese are incapable of bad design or deflation), nor is it cynical. “Through the darkest hours of a sagging economy, there’s always an optimistic tone,” says Brûlé. “There’s lots of hectoring voices out there, a lot of anger about things, but that’s not why people come to our brand.”

What’s Hot/What’s Not: 12/05/10

Posted in What's Hot/What's Not on December 5, 2010 by icn2

What’s Hot:

Dr. Drew to HLN – HLN hired Dr. Drew for a primetime show to launch in 2011. But HLN was cagey about when they would put him on, something which several media writers keyed off of as significant…as though another shoe was going to drop eventually.

Nancy Grace Cancer Scare – Nancy Grace announced that she had been in the hospital over a possible Cancer problem which turned out not to be Cancer.

Disharmony on Parker Spitzer? – The New York Post breathlessly wrote about Kathleen Parker being unhappy with Eliot Spitzer dominating the show she’s on. CNN, interestingly enough, didn’t deny the incidents cited in the Post story but did deny that it was planning on making any changes anytime soon.

Thomas Roberts – Without publicly confirming that Roberts had become officially part of NBC News staff, MSNBC has put Roberts into the 3pm ET slot for the rest of the month.

Wikileaks Strikes Again – Wikileaks dominated the news cycle this week but as is usual for cable news the signal to noise ratio was out of whack.

Congressional Stalemate? – The other big story to dominate the news cycle was what will Congress do or not do the rest of the year.

Robin Meade to CNN? – Speculation swirled on the heels of HLN’s November ratings that CNN would poach Robin Meade from HLN and put her in the spot where American Morning operates.

What’s Not:

Robin Meade to CNN? – I think the speculation may be misguided. 1) If HLN does lose Meade it creates a pretty big hole. 2) If CNN brings Meade over will it leave the forumula she operated with on HLN intact and does that really fit in with what CNN is trying to do? 3) If CNN brings Meade over on the notion that she’ll improve its morning ratings but it tries to make her work in the confines of its charter, which is not the same as what happens on HLN, will that be a recipe for disaster? All these questions are important and depending on how they are answered, Meade moving to CNN may not be the success that some think it would be.

Chemistry 101…

Posted in CNN on December 2, 2010 by icn2

The LA Times’ Jim Rainey writes about Parker Spitzer, post NY Post article saying Parker is unhappy with Spitzer.

Spitzer still dominates the show—boring in on guests the way that might be expected of a former prosecutor. The one-time New York attorney general conducts extended interviews, as he did Wednesday night with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Republican political operative Mark McKinnon.

Parker, meanwhile, tends mostly to smiling intros and sign-offs. She can appear decidedly passive, almost meek. Parker is supposed to offer the conservative alternative to Spitzer’s biting liberalism. But on Wednesday night, for example, she smiled benignly as her co-host asserted that “the entire agenda of progress in this nation” has been held hostage by Republicans in the U.S. Senate.

Too much of television gets judged too quickly, thrown off the air before chemistry can develop. But “Parker Spitzer” needs an infusion of charm, news and verve. And fast. If Parker’s really mad enough to walk off the set, she should turn a little of that animus on her co-host. It would make for livlier discussions, and better TV.

If not, CNN should be looking for a feistier counterpoint to the irrepressible Spitzer, whose strengths as an interviewer and host have been underestimated by most critics. But who would be the right foil?

FNC/FBN’s Hiring Strategy

Posted in FBN, FNC on December 2, 2010 by icn2

In an article that’s not going to please Fox one bit, The Washington Post’s Paul Farhi writes about FNC/FBN’s hiring strategy…

There’s a thread running through all these personnel decisions: McKelway, Dobbs, Williams and Imus all were controversial media figures. In each case, they ran afoul primarily of liberals who objected to something (and in some cases, a lot of things) they said. Dobbs, for example, was a liberal bete noir for his nightly criticism of federal immigration policy and illegal immigrants on his CNN show; he also kept alive questions about President Obama’s birth certificate long after the issue had been discredited.

By hiring each one at or near the peak of their notoriety, Fox chief Roger Ailes “is being opportunistic,” says Andrew Tyndall, who writes a newsletter, the Tyndall Report, covering television news. “It’s a way to play the culture wars.”

Tyndall jokes that the hiring policy may be turning Fox into “the safety-net network. If you say something outrageous, there’s still a paycheck waiting for you.”

Fox did not respond to phone and e-mail requests for comment.

Really? What a shock…not.

Parker vs. Spitzer…

Posted in CNN on December 1, 2010 by icn2

The New York Post’s Tara Palmeri writes about Kathleen Parker not being happy with her co-host. Do note CNN’s non-denial denial concerning the alleged incidents cited by Palmeri…

Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker actually stormed off the set of the “Parker Spitzer” show during a pre-taping a few weeks ago — furious that her co-host is continually allowed to take charge of their nightly CNN chat-fest, the insiders said.

Although still fuming, Parker did return to wrap up the segment, they said.

But she’s angry that the show’s producers are allegedly doing nothing to play up her strengths on the ailing show, the sources said.

Some staffers said Spitzer — the hard-charging, former state attorney general who resigned as governor in 2008 after admitting to patronizing prostitutes — thrust himself up front and center right out of the gate, leaving Parker without a chance.

But other insiders said the Pulitzer Prize-winning Parker has only herself to blame.
