Matthews vs. Scarborough? Not so fast…

Posted in MSNBC on January 5, 2011 by icn2

NewsBusters’ Mark Finkelstein writes about Chris Matthews seeing Joe Scarborough on the House floor this afternoon and getting kinda huffy about it. Or at least that’s the way Finkelstein portrays it…

Kvetched Chris: “What do you think of the rule that allows former members like Joe Scarborough to walk around the floor with such impunity, John Harris? We’re looking at him on camera here . . . I’ve never seen such casualness.”

Except it’s pretty obvious that Matthews was just ribbing Joe. Watch the video. Finkelstein makes the worst interpretation possible based on scant evidence while ignoring contradictory evidence…like Matthews’ jovial tongue in cheek tone during the whole exchange. If you just read the transcript you might come away with a different opinion but tone and phrasing are far better indicators than simple text. I was going to originally write this up the way Finkelstein had but then I played the video and I had no choice but to go in the exact opposite direction because the video is the best argument against Finkelstein’s theory.

There are people MSNBC who would definitely stick it to Scarborough on the air such as Keith “Get a shovel!” Olbermann. But Matthews is too much a wonk and hasn’t shown much public desire to take on the only conservative on MSNBC.

Nancy Grace Re-Signs with HLN after Flirting With FBN…

Posted in FBN, HLN on January 5, 2011 by icn2

TVNewser’s Alex Weprin writes that Nancy Grace re-signed with HLN. But the interesting part of the story was that Grace was talking with FBN.

Grace has a number of friends at Fox News, and has appeared on the network on a few occasions in recent years to promote her other projects. FBN is also home to another legal show, Andrew Napolitano‘s “Freedom Watch.”

My mind reels at the thought of Grace and her business journalism pedigree, or lack thereof, on FBN…

Tom Goldstone Tapped to Helm Fareed Zakaria GPS

Posted in CNN on January 5, 2011 by icn2

CNN announced that Tom Goldstone has been named Executive Producer of Fareed Zakaria GPS, taking over from Liza McGuirk who’s now with Parker Spitzer…

Award-winning television news producer Tom Goldstone, most recently senior producer of CNN’s FAREED ZAKARIA GPS, has been named executive producer of the program.

In the announcement made today by Bart Feder, senior vice president of current programming for CNN/U.S, Feder cited Goldstone’s 15+ years of experience in producing both live news and television magazine programming. Prior to joining CNN in 2003 to work on Paula Zahn NOW and special projects, and later, Campbell Brown, Goldstone worked at ABC News on various programming including “Primetime Live” and “20/20.” Goldstone’s appointment is effective immediately.

“Tom’s expertise in developing smart public affairs programming is an excellent fit for Zakaria’s incisive analysis and distinguished interviews with global news makers and business leaders,” said Feder. “It’s a successful partnership that has already yielded some of the most interesting hours of Sunday morning television.”

Why John Roberts Joined FNC…

Posted in CNN, FNC on January 5, 2011 by icn2

TVNewser’s Gail Shister writes about the reason John Roberts bolted to FNC…

That question has been buzzing in media circles since it was revealed Monday that Roberts — headed to Atlanta as CNN’s senior national correspondent — would be doing the same job in the same city for rival Fox News. He debuts next week.

While many assume it was all about the Benjamins, industry insiders say Fox and CNN offered comparable salaries and time frames for contracts (three years.)

Rick Sanchez Launches own Web Site…

Posted in CNN on January 4, 2011 by icn2

WebNewser’s Molly Stark Dean writes about Rick Sanchez’s new website…

But WebNewser stumbled upon Sanchez’s actual new home on the web, RickSanchezTV.com, which was registered on October 20, 2010 — 20 days after Sanchez was fired from CNN.

Right now the site is pretty bare bones, with “Schedule” and “Contact Info” tabs that are not yet functional, as well as a direct link to Sanchez’s Twitter feed, which he has since renamed @RickSanchezTV.

Looking at that place marker page one thing struck me. Aren’t those pics of Sanchez CNN’s property?

In Depth: The CNN – John Roberts Debacle…

Posted in CNN, In Depth on January 3, 2011 by icn2

We still don’t know exactly how and why things fell apart between John Roberts and CNN, the end result of which had Roberts winding up at FNC. But what we do know is that CNN horribly bungled the Roberts situation.

Last year CNN was involved in a very different bungled change; the exit/push of Larry King and the hiring of Piers Morgan. During that whole saga CNN wouldn’t say anything until the ink was dry. It wouldn’t say it was looking to find a Larry King replacement, even though the stories about Morgan had been circulating for a while, until King “announced” his leaving and a separation deal had been signed. It wouldn’t say it was talking to Morgan, even though it was (though maybe not in legal terms), until it had reached an agreement with NBC Universal. It wouldn’t say for sure that Piers was the one until it had hired him. Sure, all the leaks…many coming from Morgan’s camp…made this whole situation farcical but the point is CNN wouldn’t announce or do a thing until the ink was dry in all these instances.

Now contrast that with what happened with John Roberts. First word leaks out that Roberts is leaving American Morning and CNN issues a “No Comment”. So far, so good. CNN never talks about contracts so this is consistent. Then Roberts has his last day at CNN on Dec 24 and Carol Costello notes at the end of American Morning that Roberts will be staying in the CNN family and Roberts talks a bit about how excited he is about the new projects and being closer to his bride to be. So you have to figure that this is a done deal, right? CNN wouldn’t let things get this far and let it go out over its air if it didn’t have some contractual thing ironed out, right? It wouldn’t put the cart before the horse…the announcement before the ink hits the paper, right?

Wrong apparently. Because one week later Roberts is now headed for FNC and CNN is facing an unmitigated disaster. It announced the move over its own air before the contract had been signed. That’s okay as long as things go as planned. If they don’t…well.

This is a colossal top to bottom failure by CNN’s executive team which let things get out of control with Roberts to such a degree that public pronunciations were allowed to occur without any legal foundation to them, something that it never let happen with King and Morgan. CNN ends up looking feckless. Newly minted President Ken Jautz starts 2011 with a self inflicted black eye. CNN has to face a bunch of questions it doesn’t want to face. Roberts going to FNC would not be the story it is for CNN had it not made it look like he was staying put. Bad show all around.

Update: Could Roberts have been playing coy on his last day? Carpe Diem recounts the final minutes of Roberts’ final appearance on American Morning and correctly notes that the suggestion that Roberts would stay with CNN came not from Roberts himself but from Carol Costello.

There are two active questions here: 1) Was Costello ad libbing in the dark, not knowing Roberts and/or CNN had no intention of getting back together? 2) Was Costello being accurate and something happened after which made Roberts turn to FNC?

John Roberts to FNC?!?!?

Posted in CNN, FNC on January 3, 2011 by icn2

Whoah! Where the hell did this come from? TVNewser’s Alex Weprin scoops that John Roberts is bolting to FNC?!?!

Former CNN “American Morning” anchor John Roberts is expected to join FOX News Channel as a senior national correspondent, based in Atlanta.

Big steal for FNC. Can’t wait to read how CNN’s negotiations with Roberts went south and FNC swooped in…

Yes, Greta…But…

Posted in CNN on January 2, 2011 by icn2

Greta Van Susteren noticed something I wrote and chimed in…

I just picked off this (below) from Inside Cable News ….

“…After Connie Chung, Paula Zahn, and Campbell Brown I think CNN has finally learned that the solo straight newsie thing just doesn’t work at [8pm]…”

I guess the blogger does not remember The Point, CNN 8pm. It was a solo anchor show and it did well.

Yes, Greta…The Point was your show. It ran on CNN at 8pm until you left for FNC and it did well for CNN at that time. But since I was looking for evidence of CNN’s lack of success with solo straight newsies at 8pm why would I mention it? What Chung, Zahn, and Brown all have in common is they represent, in different ways, CNN’s inability to reverse ratings trends. In Chung’s case, the Iraq War happened and she was taken off the air and her show Connie Chung Tonight was not brought back after it was over. This is around the time FNC’s ratings really took off and the network got too close and eventually surpassed CNN primetime in the ratings. CNN next tried Paula Zahn (and later Zahn and Anderson Cooper) before settling on just Zahn. By this point CNN was #2 in primetime and the network was apparently willing to live with that because Zahn lasted there for four years and for most of which it was stuck in 2nd. It wasn’t until Countdown knocked CNN to 3rd at 8pm that CNN finally decided to make a move (after too much dawdling in my opinion). Next was Campbell Brown. No change in CNN’s 3rd place status at 8pm and Brown saw the writing on the wall, before CNN did, and took herself out.

So yes, I didn’t mention your show. But your show had nothing to do with my point. The cable news landscape at 8pm that existed when The Point was on is not the cable news landscape we face today. It wasn’t the focus of media writers’ attention like it is today. FNC and The O’Reilly Factor’s success changed all that. Countdown’s success on MSNBC drove the point home for the dullards who hadn’t figured it out already. 8pm ET is no longer an hour where straight news can work…or at least that’s the conventional wisdom of today until either people’s viewing habits change or some new show comes along to prove the conventional wisdom wrong. Given the way things are today I don’t think even The Point would be able to survive at 8pm if it were on today. 10pm ET is a different time slot with different expectations. On The Record isn’t The Factor or Hannity. AC 360 isn’t Larry King or Parker Spitzer. The Last Word is mostly a subdued version of Maddow or Countdown though there’s more commonality across MSNBC’s primetime landscape than either FNC or CNN’s. It will be interesting to watch and see how The Last Word’s success does or doesn’t force CNN to reconsider what can air at 10pm, just as The Factor and Countdown showed what apparently can’t work at 8pm.
