Fast and Loose…

Mediaite’s Tommy Christopher writes about something Andrea Mitchell said today on her show, and, in the process, throws a few accusatory darts at a NewsBusters article by Scott Whitlock. On technical points I give this bout to Christopher (in large part based on the glaring contextual omission by Whitlock in his article which Christopher highlights) though Mitchell probably could have phrased it better…

Rep. Peter King’s (R-NY) congressional hearings on radical Muslims in America have sparked a good deal of controversy, and a lot of compelling video. The latest example is an Andrea Mitchell clip that’s zipping around the conservative blogosphere with headlines like “MSNBC‘s Andrea Mitchell ’You and I Are Both White‘ We Don’t Get This Whole Getting Offended Thing Like Muslims Do.”

The knocks on Mitchell – ranging from “bigotry” to ignorance of the existence of white Muslims – rely on an omission of crucial context.

  1. She tripped over the question, Lundgren said ‘What!?’, and she clarified what she meant. Newsbusters is full of it.

  2. Yay!

  3. She’s not terribly polished, but she knows stuff..as opposed to some of the unpolished idiots at Fox. And in this case, she didn’t use the ‘some say’-tactic that so many use. It just took her a second to get to who was saying it.

Maybe I just don’t “get” her but I think Mitchell is awful. Does she know stuff? She seems terribly lost, way too often. I’ve tried to watch her but I just find her unbearable.

  5. She’s older than all of us, she must know something.. ;-)

Hey, I’m no genius but I expect a lot more out my TV talking heads, darn it.

  7. Yeah, intelligent interviews with interesting people is so BORING.

I like Andrea Mitchell, and her connections within Washington with all the big name politicians is a huge get (and reason why she has a show), but she’s incredibly hard to watch, as LS pointed out. She either has trouble reading the teleprompter or she has dyslexia (no offense to her if she does). She just isn’t a natural in front of the camera, though… she is great for interviews and debates, just not as the host.

Regarding her interview here and the comments she made, how is she wrong? We as caucasians don’t know how it feels to be discriminated against like African Americans and people of color are all the time. That’s a valid point. Conservatives are always complaining about political correctness, but when liberals say something politically incorrect (teabaggers, anybody?), the whole conservative blogosphere goes nutty. Total double standard.

my2cents, teabagger is an insult, not a politically incorrect term. It’s not the same as calling an undocumented worker an illegal alien or an african american black. No double standard here.

And when are people of color discriminated against? Did you take a time machine trip to the 1950s? you need to come back to 2011.

She basically said that white people don’t deserve to ever get offended about anything just because they are the majority. That’s total bull. King’s congressional hearing was a waste of time in my opinion but what Mitchell said was pretty stupid.
