More on Burnett…

Posted in CNN on April 29, 2011 by icn2

The New York Times’ Brian Stelter has more on Erin Burnett jumping to CNN…

Reflecting her interest in breaking out of pure business news, Ms. Burnett spoke fondly about her reporting for CNBC in countries like Nigeria, India and Iran. She spent more than a week in Cairo during the recent protests against the government of Hosni Mubarak. Among attributes of CNN that appealed to her, she said, was its “incredible global platform in covering news.”

Along with her anchor role, Ms. Burnett will be the channel’s chief business and economics correspondent. “We see her role as being broader,” Mr. Jautz said, than that of another CNN anchor, Ali Velshi, who is currently its chief business correspondent but may be getting groomed for a new position with CNN.

Mr. Velshi had been anchoring CNN from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Eastern, but he has lately been on a tryout of sorts on “American Morning,” the channel’s program from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., which is undergoing a reinvention. There has been speculation inside CNN that Ms. Burnett could slide into Mr. Velshi’s time slot if he were to be named a permanent anchor on “American Morning.”

Erin Burnett Joins CNN

Posted in CNN on April 29, 2011 by icn2

Out all day so I’m just now catching up on the blog. CNN announced that Erin Burnett has joined the network…

Erin Burnett Joins CNN Worldwide

Erin Burnett will join CNN Worldwide as anchor and chief business and economics correspondent, it was announced today by Jim Walton, president of CNN Worldwide. Burnett will anchor a weekday general news program and will contribute to CNN’s coverage of national and international breaking news events and contribute reporting to CNN.com.

Burnett will begin in June and will be based in CNN’s New York Headquarters.

“Erin Burnett is a talented journalist and her perspective will add meaningfully to CNN’s coverage of the top national and international news stories we cover each day,” said Walton. “Erin is the kind of all-star player that knows how to connect-the-dots and translate events into relevant information for viewers.”

Margaret Brennan Profile…

Posted in Bloomberg on April 28, 2011 by icn2

The Greenwich Citizen’s Barbara Perry Bind profiles Bloomberg’s Margaret Brennan…

Describe a typical day on the job.

Live TV is not predictable — that’s the fun and dangerous part of it. My team and I broadcast our program live on air from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET. I think of my day in two parts. The first part is a push to get myself ready for the live show. I wake up around 5:15 a.m. First thing, I walk and feed my puppy (a puggle named Maddy.). I also check Twitter, which I use like a newswire. I get to the office around 6:15 or 6.30 a.m. and read up on all of the news that has broken overnight. By 9: 57 a.m., I’m on set and ready for the show. During the next two hours, my team and I are constantly in contact, as the stories that we’re reporting on during the show often change.

The scripts and plans go out the window once news breaks. That’s when the fun starts. After we get off air, my team meets and we plan the next show. Then I work on projects, reports, talk to sources and work ahead. I try to end my time in the office by 4 p.m. and take the next show’s research “homework” with me.

What’s on your mind?

Erin Burnett to CNN?

Posted in CNBC, CNN on April 27, 2011 by icn2

The New York Times’ Brian Stelter scoops that Erin Burnett looks to be jumping to CNN…

The CNBC anchor Erin Burnett is poised to sign a long-term contract with CNN, according to three people with knowledge of her plans.

The signing will represent a shift to general news anchoring for Ms. Burnett, who has shown interest in branching out beyond business news, CNBC’s specialty. It is unclear what time slot she will occupy at CNN.

The only way this move makes sense is if an opening occurs during CNN’s dayside. Prime is locked up. Early prime is not but putting Burnett in at 7pm untested in a hard news format is probably too risky to contemplate for CNN. The one possibility I see here that makes sense is that Burnett slides in to Ali Velshi’s slot because Velshi will join American Morning full time.

Update: Actually there’s another option which didn’t occur to me even though it was staring me in the face. CNN is using the three headed monster format on American Morning. Burnett could join Velshi and Chetry at that show. That’s another possibility.

What, besides Obama’s birth certificate, is on your mind?

Cooper vs. Hannity…

Posted in CNN, FNC on April 26, 2011 by icn2

The AP reports that Anderson Cooper isn’t happy with something that aired on last week’s Hannity Bias special…

Cooper, on his CNN show, noted that he was quoted in last week’s Sean Hannity special on media bias. Fox aired a clip of Cooper saying that a former U.S. ambassador in Africa, Joseph Wilson, was “the victim of a Bush administration smear campaign.”

Cooper says that if Fox aired his full report, it was clear he was reporting Wilson’s claim of a smear campaign — not saying it himself.

Cooper says that he tries to choose his words carefully and “don’t like it when someone cuts around them to make it seem like I’m saying something that I’m not.”

Hannity’s executive producer, John Finley, had no comment Tuesday.

Mika Brzezinski Interview…

Posted in MSNBC on April 26, 2011 by icn2

Kirkus Reviews’ Devon Glenn interviews Mika Brzezinski

You speak frankly about your experience at Morning Joe. Were you worried about backlash from your employers?

I was very frank in the book. And you know what? It was liberating to write. Not a lot was edited out. In fact, two words were edited out. I handed it to my boss, the president of MSNBC, Phil Griffin, and I sat with him, and he read this book in front of me, page after page after page—about himself, about our company, about what we went through, about the other women that have chimed in with me—and I sat there shriveled up, thinking, “This is it. How much of this are we going to redact? And how frustrated am I going to feel when I walk out the door?”

In the book there are moments where Phil uses a curse word, where he’s talking to Joe. He said, “Motherfucker, is she crazy?” Well, [in the book] I’d actually used the word “dude” to protect him. But he goes, “Nope. You know I don’t say ‘dude.’ I say ‘motherfucker.’ Can you put that back?” He basically corrected the one thing I didn’t put in there perfectly…Then he said, “What can we do to help you with this?”

I gotta tell you, I’m still surprised at what can happen when you’re transparent—when you’re just yourself and you tell the truth. And you’re honest not only about yourself but about the world around you. I have found that only positive things have come from it.

Nick Wrenn Interview…

Posted in CNN on April 26, 2011 by icn2

The Business Standard’s Vanita Kohli-Khandekar interviews Nick Wrenn, VP of Digital Services for CNNI… (via CNN Observations)

Do you see any patterns in the way news is consumed on digital platforms across different markets? How are these different from the way news is consumed on linear TV?

Essentially, a compelling story will be well hit wherever the users are. However, we have seen an especially strong response to our mobile apps from South-East Asia, especially Korea and Singapore. It’s also interesting to look at how social media referrals to our website come largely from North America and the UK, especially from Facebook and Twitter. There also seems to be a greater appetite to comment on stories and share opinions from North America, too.

Another difference in news consumption digital vs TV is around video. Online users like to snack on video-on-demand; they are less likely to passively watch whole shows. At CNN, we like to make our video-on-demand a few minutes only; in fact, 2-3 minutes is a good length. We have been working on original video for the online audience and are pleased with how this is evolving.

Also, online we are cognizant of user comments, actively encouraging them on stories and when we can respond to the debates. Comments may not always be complimentary but they do often give us a useful insight into what issues are important to our audience. We have been working to actively highlight some comments recently with follow-up articles that keep the debate going.

Obviously, news consumption on digital is much more active, with users choosing the topics that interest them and skipping over ones that don’t. But like our TV colleagues, we want to keep our audience with us for as long as possible and encourage them to return frequently.

Was Today the Last Day of Glenn Beck’s Show on FNC?

Posted in FNC on April 22, 2011 by icn2

Twitter is afire with the buzz that today may have been Glenn Beck’s last day on FNC at 5pm. Brian Stelter tweeted the following

Glenn Beck opened his Fox News show tonight by saying, “Welcome to Friday. The final chapter begins of ‘The Glenn Beck Program.’”

…Does that mean tonight’s his last show? I don’t know. I’ve called Fox News PR; Beck’s PR; & Beck’s company; no one’s picked up the phone.

I doubt that today is Beck’s last show, but his detractors are abuzz on Twitter now; check out the #GlennBeckFinalShowSpoilers hashtag.

Though the schedule doesn’t list Beck next week, J$ correctly points out that it looks like it did the day that Beck’s show got pre-empted. Since Beck’s show is still listed on the FNC website, I think the “Final Chapter” reference today was a “beginning of the end” thing and probably not the final show.
