Describe a typical day on the job.
Live TV is not predictable — that’s the fun and dangerous part of it. My team and I broadcast our program live on air from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET. I think of my day in two parts. The first part is a push to get myself ready for the live show. I wake up around 5:15 a.m. First thing, I walk and feed my puppy (a puggle named Maddy.). I also check Twitter, which I use like a newswire. I get to the office around 6:15 or 6.30 a.m. and read up on all of the news that has broken overnight. By 9: 57 a.m., I’m on set and ready for the show. During the next two hours, my team and I are constantly in contact, as the stories that we’re reporting on during the show often change.
The scripts and plans go out the window once news breaks. That’s when the fun starts. After we get off air, my team meets and we plan the next show. Then I work on projects, reports, talk to sources and work ahead. I try to end my time in the office by 4 p.m. and take the next show’s research “homework” with me.
