More on Halperin
The Washington Post’s Greg Sargent has more details on what the thinking was that led to Mark Halperin’s suspension.
New details on Mark Halperin’s suspension: An MSNBC source tells me that MSNBC preident Phil Griffin’s initial response to Halperin’s “dick” crack was that he should be suspended for two weeks, in keeping with Ed Schultz’s recent limited suspension. But the volume of emails flooding in demanding Halperin’s firing persuaded him the suspension should be indefinite, the source says. That’s what MSNBC announced this morning.
But the White House has been privately sending MSNBC a similar message to what David Axelrod said earlier today, the source says: That they view Halperin’s move as stupid and distasteful, but ultimately a mistake that should not be a defining one. That, plus the commentary today saying it was an overreaction, likely means that Halperin will be ultimately allowed back on the air at some point, the source says.
There are indefinite suspensions and there are indefinite suspensions. In MSNBC’s history the only one that was “fatal” was David Shuster’s. Most of MSNBC’s “indefinite” suspensions aren’t very long. That’s the beauty of the indefinite suspension. It’s ambiguous which means you can make it as long, or as short, as you want to.

Thus leading to the inevitable ”suspended suspension”. The story is old already.

Come on, even Obama knows he was being “kind of a dick”. He may be “likable enough”, but he’s not exactly the warmest personality. Halperin got caught by the casual conversational style of MJ, with no small help from the panel. Who cares?

Has there been some sort of oranized effort by liberal/left blogs behind this? The Kos crew? I can’t imagine that this is all spontaneous.
Not that it necessarily matters for Halperin and MSNBC.

Uh, Steve..a lot of Obama supporters watch MJ, and most of them own a computer. You don’t need a “campaign” to get them typing..

Plus, Halperin is a frequent critic of the prez. A lot of those supporters were probably fed up long before this. Personally, I think they’re idiots for complaining, but I’m not what you’d call an “Obama supporter”.

I’m surprised that Mika and Joe haven’t issued a statement on their behalf. They sat there laughing hysterically after Halperin used the word.
And Scarborough certainly was encouraging him to say something.
My guess is they’ll give some type of mea culpa tomorrow.

Does retweeting on a blog break some sort of copyright law?

MSNBC’s overreaction to the Dick comment is another example of “if they left the story alone…” But instead now Obama = Dick. Stupid Left

Why was he sanctioned at all…..MSNBC did not do this type activity when Olberman bad mouthed Bush etc. But I guess you cant do this when the rest of the media is in high dudgeon and moving into protect Obama mode for the upcoming election.
As the first lady said last week….the media was protecting them.

Mrs. Obama was referring to her children, you lying hack.

Ehhh, I think this is a ridiculous overreaction, but I do see a bit of a difference between calling the President a ‘dick’ and all that other stuff. Now, if someone is able to find an instance of MSNBC personnel calling Bush the name, that’ll be fun.

Huge overreaction. He didn’t say he is a “dick”, he said he was “kind of a dick” at the press conference. Big whoop. Calling the president a fascist, insinuating he’s a murderer and calling for him to be put in prison is a lot worse.

Yeah, but I’d rather be kind of a dick than start a meaningless war, then botch the invasion.

Why not do both? (Libya…)
