No 100% BSkyB for News Corp at the moment it looks like.

I doubt many Americans realized how much power the Murdochs weild in the UK..I certainly didn’t. Things I learned this week: After the conservatives won elections a few years ago, a News International paper (The Sun, I think) claimed “We Wot Won It”; Tony Blair made a pilgrimage to Sydney to kiss Rupert’s ring in a bid for his support. That’s. Crazy.

  3. jackyboy Says:

Yea it certainly works differently there.

  4. stevemg Says:

The (liberal) Labour Party in the UK ran the government from 1997 to 2010. The conservatives won power last year as part of a coalition government with the Liberal Democratic Party.

Seems Mr. Murdoch’s influence didn’t help him out all those years.

  5. stevemg Says:

    ^Sposh Spice says otherwise.

Benny Hill was unavailable for comment.

  6. jackyboy Says:

I don’t know much about British politics, all I know is that what is happening has serious repercussions because this goes straight to the top. The magnitude of the press government relationship is really unimaginable here.

  7. joeremi Says:

Posh could topple a government. I can’t get through a British auto racing mag without some reference to her. I don’t know what she does over there, but they’re obsessed with her.

  8. paminwi Says:

One thing mentioned about the Murdoch deal in the European press is that other tabloid papers/newspapers are not doing a whole lot of Murdoch bashing because they are a bit afraid of where the investigations will go. It sounds like there is some fear that some of their misdeeds may come to light also.

  9. jackyboy Says:

There is no doubt that there a lot of skeletons in a lot of closets (or maybe a warehouse?).

  10. lonestar77 Says:

The whole stupid story is struggling to gain traction over here. Our media is all over it because they hate FNC. Politico has somewhere around 197 articles about it. CNN, MSNBC, etc. are just wishing the controversy will somehow destroy FNC. But, the problem is, nobody over here has ever heard of News of the World and nobody over here really cares about the media and government over in the U.K.

Sorry to break the news to you, lefties, FNC isn’t going away. Your monopoly isn’t going to be reinstated.

  11. laura l Says:

Having watched CNN’s coverage of Michelle Bachmann’s ‘business interests’, aside from believing that she’s cooked, it also occurs to me that Chris Matthews was right.

I used to think that she was just incredibly-well focused and prepared. Once you look at the clip from 2004 (with the cult-like hair), you realize how calculating she is. She has a way of brushing-off questions in favor of what she wants to say, and it always seemed to work for her. Watch that clip where the anchor tries to question her about her ‘business’, and you’ll see that it doesn’t play quite-so-well anymore. There’s a big difference from being ‘focused’ and being detached from your own reality.

To say that she’s ‘hypnotized’ or ‘Stepford-like’ might be a bit simplistic, but it isn’t so far off.

  12. Site problems. Lovely.

  13. Sorry to break the news to you, lefties, FNC isn’t going away. Your monopoly isn’t going to be reinstated.

That’s so sick. This response from the right is rampant over at Mediaite. Nobody cares about the 13yo girl, war victims, 7/7 victims, and possibly 9/11 victims being hacked. It’s all about how poor FNC is under attack from the Big Bad Liberals, when everybody knows if it was Imelt or Comcast involved, you guys would be screaming bloody murder. Disgusting.

  14. lonestar77 Says:

I simply have zero interest in the story due to the fact that it’s a paper I’ve never heard of over in a country I’ve visited once. I don’t know what Comcast does in Britain, nor do I care.

  15. Yes, you’ve made it abundantly clear that the only part of this story that matters to you is protecting Fox News. That’s creepy.

  16. lonestar77 Says:

Well, maybe cuz the stories I’ve seen on it begin with “Will this be the downfall of FNC”. You know that’s the only reason MSNBC, CNN, Politico, etc. care about it.

I just don’t care that much what goes on over in the U.K. I didn’t care about the stupid wedding, I don’t care about the Monarchy, red phone booths or tea time.

None of the story interests me. The “protecting Fox News” part doesn’t interest me. I was just pointing out my opinion as to why some seem to care so much.

  17. imnotblue Says:

Joe, you stated on Mediaite that you’re so interested in this because you hate (and always have hated) Murdoch.

So who do you think you’re fooling by pretending you have any interest in the actual victims in this story? You don’t. You’re just out to hurt Murdoch’s empire. That’s all.

  18. You don’t know shyte, Blue. I’m perfectly capable of holding more than one thought in my head at a time. In this case, they’re related: I’ve known Murdoch was scum since he foisted that rancid Current Affair on us, and this vile attack on murder victims validates my feelings about him.

Yeah yeah, I know, I can’t prove he was directly involved and I’m just rooting for FNC’s downfall blah blah blah. Go stuff it, you apologist hack. If he didn’t have direct knowledge, he fostered a rank tabloid atmosphere which encouraged it. It’s disgusting.

Also disgusting is that you presume I only care about murder victims when they’re being attack by people I don’t like. If you think I would be standing by GE or Comcast the way you are NewsCorp in a similar situation, you are sorely mistaken. Some things are more important than ideology.

Btw, I have no interest in “the end of Fox”. I’d like to see it run by people with an ounce of decency. Maybe that will be the final outcome of this horrible mess.

    How DARE Reporters ask questions!!!

  20. joeremi Says:

I can’t tell what’s different, but The Five is dull today. Maybe I already know what everyone’s going to say. Four righties agreeing on their talking point, while one lefty fights back with his has its limits, I guess.

  21. joeremi Says:

    Cantor is such a douche.

    @LukeRussert
Dem Aide, no walk out: Cantor rudely interrupted POTUS 3 times to advocate for short-term debt ceiling increases while BO was wrapping mtg

  22. mlong5000 Says:

As said the only reason anybody cares about the Newscorp story here in the US is because FOX news haters believe somehow this will help their goal of destroying FOX….but FOX isn’t going anywhere because it’s needed to balance the leftwing leaning CNN and MSNBC which by the way Joe who don’t have any more “people with an ounce of decency” as FOX.

As for The 5 their still finding their legs so yea Mathews will score(in the demo) a few victories.

  23. joeremi Says:

As said the only reason anybody cares about the Newscorp story here in the US is because FOX news haters believe somehow this will help their goal of destroying FOX

I’m losing count of the number of morons making this claim. It’s offensive, and has no evidentiary basis. You’re accusing me of not caring that murder victims were hacked for the benefit of a f****** tabloid. Go screw.

  24. Dennis Miller bores me.

President Obama is not serious about solving the debt crisis beyond his own re-election. The art of governing through statesmanship is far beyond his abilities so he falls back on his experience… political gaming.

He scares old people with a warning that their Social Security cheques may be in jeopardy after August 2 yet employers will continue to pay FICA and Medicare payroll taxes every week. Because the president can’t raid the SS trust fund without congressional approval, if those payments don’t go out it’s on him. He’s such a… what Halperin said. And he’s a scumbag to boot for scaring old people.

  25. lonestar77 Says:

^ Yeah, but whose gonna call him on it, other than FNC? He can pretty much say whatever he wants.

  26. ^ Anyone who earns a paycheck can call him on it. Look on your stub and you’ll see a deduction for FICA and Medicare. Your employer pays the other half. “What ya doin’ with my money, Barack?”

  27. joeremi Says:

Hey, did you notice that Bachmann’s campaign has hit some roadblocks lately? Someone did. She’s baaaack..lookin’ all demure and pearl-necklaced and blazered and hair-not-blowin-in-the-wind-ed. Reload! Times tested principles!

    http://www.mediaite.com/tv/palin-sen-mcconnell-plan-makes-no-sense-hands-obama-budget-with-white-flag/

  28. Sarah Palin isn’t back; she never left and she’s just doing what she’s been doing. Every campaign hits a few roadblocks. That’s the benefit of having primaries, after all, and we need to see how well the candidates survive problems.

If she was a former governor… or even a mayor or county executive, for that matter, I’d donate to her campaign. That she’d be major improvement over Obama is a given, but some executive experience in a government setting would be extremely helpful.

  29. joeremi Says:

“Reparative therapy” for re-education of “barbarians” whose sexual prefereces are “of Satan” is more than a simple roadblock. She’s cooked after Iowa, and Sarah knows it.

  30. Nah, that’s not as big a deal as you think. But it is important to get this stuff out during the early campaign season.

  31. joeremi Says:

I got news for ya, sonny, that’s a very big deal for a majority of the country. You need moderates/independents to win the general, and there’s no way they’re gonna go for that, especially after they get a load of Mr. Bachmann up close and personal. Remember when I said Kerry could never get elected because people couldn’t stand his wife? Michele has a Ter-AYZ-a problem..

  32. laura l Says:

Sarah Palin did glamour-photos for a magazine best-known for putting her on the cover in shorts. It was a clear declaration of “Notice me, I’m still hot, remember?” She was obviously stung by the fact that Michelle Bachmann had overshadowed her. It was silly and demeaning and utterly unnecessary in light of Bachmann’s emerging oddness…and no one will remember it a week from now.
I wanted Bachmann to be the real thing, just to get rid of the other one. Arg.

  33. John Kerry didn’t lose the election because of his wife. John Kerry lost because of John Kerry. Conversely, Barack Obama won because of his race, which is old news now.

  34. savefarris Says:

Mark Halperin was right. Obama is kind of a d___:

  35. One of the stories making the news rounds today is the Pennsylvania man whose life has been made difficult because his name is Casey Anthony.

People can’t tell the difference? Clearly, this country has a “moron” contingent outside of government, too.

I don’t think so. Bachmann has overshadowed her yes but if she were really uncomfortable with it all she had to do was announce she was running for president and the media attention will change in a heartbeat.

    And who remembers Newsweek articles?

  37. joeremi Says:

That presumes Sarah would run for President against a strong Bachmann, and would be dumb enough to announce this soon, thereby robbing her of her longstanding “will she or won’t she” gambit she strings everyone along with.

I don’t think she had any intention of running when she did the Newsweek shoot. If Bachmann continues to stumble, she will change her mind.

    And who remembers Newsweek articles?

    Nobody’s talking about the article..

  38. jackyboy Says:

Bachmann is strong but she isn’t invincible. She hasn’t been nearly as scrutinized as Palin has and so far Bachmann has taken some missteps. And yes it will rob her of her gambit but what about the whole I’m running for president thing that will take the place afterwards? That is far from insignificant.

Honestly I have no idea what she will do, one moment it looks like she ill run one moment it looks like she wont but I doubt Bachmann’s actions navigate her decision(s).

  39. joeremi Says:

Watching the Hannity segment. She doesn’t. Know. Anything. Why do I keep being surprised by this?

  40. jackyboy Says:

^Translation: I disagree with her but hey it’s Palin, what’s few insults eh?

  41. joeremi Says:

Dude, I disagree with lots of people I see on TV every day. Listen to her. It’s just a collection of words. Her answer to not raising the debt ceiling is “departments can be revamped”. Really? Which departments? How? She doesn’t know; it’s just a “thing to say to Hannity that no one will argue with”.

It amazes me that a former Gov., former VP, and potential presidential candidate is so utterly devoid of substance. “Obama isn’t good at his job” is not a policy proposal. It’s something people say on a blog.

  42. Joe is right about the things she says on most of her FNC appearances. Based on some of her written opinions, though, she’s obviously capable of thoughtful and detailed policy arguments. Why she doesn’t get into any of that on Fox is a mystery as well as a pretty dumb strategy as I see it.

  43. jackyboy Says:

Jesus joe do you want a campaign platform in every interview? Is she really supposed to tell you and go through a 2 trillion dollar budget and tell you exactly what needs to go where? If she runs then grill her on saying nothing on policy. For now she offered her analysis on Obama’s job performance (she’s not impressed). That’s all.

  44. Jesus Jacky, if all she’s gonna do is say “Obama bad, time tested principles, free market, constitution, we need to get the country back on track”, what the hell are they interviewing her for? The only thing she offers is repeated statements of the obvious whatever-the-current-predicament is, followed by vapid declarations of how it needs to be better with “hard work”. Or something.

She shows no grasp of governing facts, and makes no attempt to analyze anything. For God’s sake, the queen of useless rightwing talking points, Andrea Tantaros, would destroy her in a debate.

Anyway, I’ve got a big meeting tomorrow and can’t keep talking. My feeble little brain is a bit stretched, itself. Night kids.

  45. jackyboy Says:

I don’t see it that way at all but whatever, to each his own.

  46. I love when Joe gets really upset at someone on here and hits back at them. Good job of standing up for yourself against the likes of Blue and Mlong, who are definite Fox News apologists to the core. I’m sorry I missed it, though.

  47. savefarris Says:

Her answer to not raising the debt ceiling is “departments can be revamped”. Really? Which departments? How?

We all know that if she were to name a specific program (say, HUD for example), the very next night every other newscast would be filled with sob stories of HUD recipients just barely scraping by. And all the reports would be titled “Why does Sarah Palin want to kill these families?”

It’s the MSM modus operandi and she’s smart enough to avoid playing their game.

  48. Letmewatchthis Movies…

im impressed by the high-quality of information on this web site. there are a great deal of excellent sources here. i’m positive i will take a look at this position all over again quickly…
