WTF moment of the year.
That just happened.
August 23, 2011 at 11:49 am
Didn’t feel it here, but heard that tremors were felt in Athens GA. If I cared, I’d know where that was. Might be SE of here.
August 23, 2011 at 12:20 pm
Allegedly folks felt it here in CT (45 min away from NYC).
I was driving, or on a tredmill, or something… because I missed it.
August 23, 2011 at 12:26 pm
Bunch of pansies who freak whenever there’s an inch of snow falling, too.
My favourite tweet:
@jeffheimbuch: MSNBC says the Washington monument is leaning to left. Fox news says its to the right.
August 23, 2011 at 12:29 pm
– snow –
Hey!
August 23, 2011 at 12:30 pm
I cant tell… I might have just felt an afterschock.
Or I might be hungry.
It’s tough to tell.
August 23, 2011 at 12:33 pm
It’s all a misunderstanding. Newt had Mexican for lunch.
August 23, 2011 at 12:46 pm
This will be the most well-covered 5.9, no injuries, no damage, quake ever. Or as we know it in California..Tuesday.
August 23, 2011 at 12:55 pm
Larry Sabato
Some people are blaming Bush, but that’s faulty presidential history. Hoover and Nixon were the Quakers. #earthquake
August 23, 2011 at 12:58 pm
Well, it’s possible there actually is some damage that will be discovered. East coast builts weren’t designed well for being all shook up.
August 23, 2011 at 1:12 pm

The winner for stupidest earthquake story of the day is ^^^.
I’ve been banned from there so I don’t have the privilege of commenting.
August 23, 2011 at 1:18 pm
In a related story, bloggers say stupid sh|t, people with nothing better to do point and gasp.
August 23, 2011 at 1:25 pm
They banned you? What, were you too polite?
August 23, 2011 at 1:41 pm
I really have no idea. Suddenly, when I go to the site it says “The site has blocked you from posting new comments.”
The box to login is gone too so I can’t even create & use a new name…like “Ifitwas”
My last post, which got disappeared, was a TC story about Tom Hartman being correct about food stamps or something. I questioned whether there was a quid pro quo with Hartmann because TC always promotes him even though not very many people have ever heard of him.
Maybe I don’t curse enough. Those bleeping bleepers!
August 23, 2011 at 1:54 pm
Megyn Kelly today: Hawt. If I were relying on her to tell me about the earthquake, there’s a good chance I wouldn’t have heard any of it.
August 23, 2011 at 2:28 pm
MSNBC finally using Chris Jansing as much as they should, she’s anchoring Hardball.
August 23, 2011 at 2:39 pm
TC is on Hartmann’s show a lot. There’s probably a bit of “you have me on a lot, so I’ll give you some press” going on there. I doubt it’s a voiced, agreed thing.
August 23, 2011 at 2:44 pm
I’d never heard of the guy until I started reading about him on Mediaite every other day. Anyway, I guess that got me banned. It’s kinda ironic because when they announced a while back that they were going to start moderating comments, I was happy. Unfortunately, I seem to be the only one who’s been “moderated”. That site would be a heck of a lot better if they banned half the posters for actual things that should get you banned.
August 23, 2011 at 2:51 pm
Megyn Kelly is a freaking idiot.

August 23, 2011 at 2:56 pm
^ This is the story:
http://www.washingtontimes.com/blog/watercooler/2011/aug/23/picket-fnc-reports-washington-monument-may-be-tilt/
says her producer got it from a Capitol police officer.
August 23, 2011 at 3:04 pm
In the clip, she said that it was just two police officers who said there was “concern” that the monument was tilting but that it was unconfirmed, situation is “fluid”. She also sounded like she doubted the report.
I don’t see the big deal or why you would call her a “freaking idiot”.
August 23, 2011 at 3:12 pm
http://campaign2012.washingtonexaminer.com/blogs/beltway-confidential/top-politically-themed-earthquake-tweets
My favorite:
@calebhowe: Breaking: Obama administration points out they “inherited” fault lines from previous administrations.
August 23, 2011 at 3:13 pm
And now they’ll briefly overcompensate by reporting equally-meaningless earthquakes in other states. Yay media predictability!
August 23, 2011 at 4:09 pm
Uhh..reporting that the Washington Monument may be in danger of collapsing is kind of a big deal. That’s not something you “hmm, I wonder if that’s happening” about on cable news. Unbelievably stupid.
August 23, 2011 at 5:02 pm
Yeah it’s really stupid to report what the Park Police tell them. But on the other hand, this is great journalism:
BLITZER: Because I had heard those reports that some people looked at it and thought it was tilting just a little bit.
August 23, 2011 at 5:15 pm
Yeah, for something as potentially catastrophic as the collapse of a national monument, I would want more than “a couple cops think it looks funny”. That goes for Blitzer, too. Contrary to how it’s often run these days, cable news should be more than “I heard a guy say..”
August 23, 2011 at 6:04 pm
Most news stories are initially based upon, “I heard somebody say …” That poorly-sourced material gets out more often during breaking news is to be expected, especially with an audience clamouring for information overload. It’s always been this way and it always will be.
August 23, 2011 at 6:37 pm
@johnnydollar: That’s typical Wolf Blitzer. Well, typical CNN in general.
Going on the air and saying the Washington Monument, one of the most prestigious structures in the Nation’s Capitol, is about to collapse on the same week that thousands, are making the pilgrimage to the MLK Monument is reckless.
Even the very sensationalist WTTG (FOX 5 DC) didn’t go that route.
Absolutely reckless “reporting” from Megyn Kelly and Wolf Blitzer.
August 23, 2011 at 7:02 pm
The intro to FOX5 News at 10 was classic.
August 23, 2011 at 7:07 pm
Well golly, Andy, that’s good to know. Care to enlighten the rest of the country?
August 23, 2011 at 7:18 pm
I may have to rescind my comments about Megyn Kelly. They have live video from the monument on FOX5 right now, reporting there are cracks. It does look like it’s tilting to the right slightly.
August 23, 2011 at 7:21 pm
@Joe: They used horror movie music and showed pictures of stuff falling and, as dramatic as could be, “Where were you when the Earth started shaking?”
August 23, 2011 at 7:24 pm
“Where were you when the Earth started shaking?”
“On 101 trying to get home, like I always am when it happens.” The awe with which the East has received this event is highly amusing on this coast.
It does look like it’s tilting to the right slightly.
You’re kidding me.
August 23, 2011 at 7:26 pm
@Joe: I took a picture with my iPhone… the camera angle made it appear that way.
FOX5 sensationalist crap.
August 23, 2011 at 7:27 pm
– to the right slightly. –
Just depends which side you’re standing on.
August 23, 2011 at 7:29 pm
“The awe with which the East has received this event is highly amusing on this coast.”
My friend in Orange County was rolling in laughter.
Got to respect the fact that this is something many people out here have never experienced.
August 23, 2011 at 7:31 pm
If that sucker’s leaning, I’m not standing on any side of it.
It’s not leaning, it has cracks at the top. Megyn and Wolf are still rumor-spreading idiots.
August 23, 2011 at 7:32 pm
I love the video that shows people in a meeting taking 10-15 seconds for “earthquake” to dawn on them. Like they couldn’t get their heads around it.
August 23, 2011 at 7:36 pm
@Joe: I was working and the place started shaking, I was like “What the **** is that?”
August 23, 2011 at 7:38 pm
Emergency shelters?! ROFLMAO!
August 23, 2011 at 7:38 pm
“The historic earthquake that struck the East Coast!” Love me some local news.

Devastating Earthquake Damage (this was sent in to our site earlier): http://www.thebaynet.com/news/index.cfm/fa/viewstory/story_ID/23761
If it was Yuengling or Flying Dog, it’d be a tragedy.
August 23, 2011 at 7:42 pm
@Laura: You will LOVE FOX5 News: http://www.myfoxdc.com/subindex/live_video/live_newscasts

LONESTAR
Don’t worry about the banning at Mediaite… you’re in good comapny.
And that was very much the reason you got banned. TC and I have been emailing about it… more to come eventually.
August 24, 2011 at 8:19 am
I don’t blame Mediaite for getting fed up. I don’t know if LS is one of these ’cause I haven’t seen many of his comments, but there’s a faction of righties over there whose only responses are “why did you run this article you Commie douchebag”. It’s tiresome.
August 24, 2011 at 9:24 am
@ Joe
That’s fine. And there are the same on the left.
However, they’re not cracking down on that. This was a specific comment, directed at a specific writer, for a specific reason… and that’s why we were removed.
Attack other posters, fine. Attack politicians, fine. Criticize one of THEIR writers, and it’s over.
August 24, 2011 at 9:38 am
They ditched you, too? I mean, you guys are obviously blithering idiots, but at least entertaining.
If all they have left is The Lantern Of Truth, Gordon Blowyer, and the the guy who says “d-crat socialist” all the time, well..
August 24, 2011 at 10:56 am
Mediaite DOES have a problem. There’s way too many comments directly attacking the integrity of the authors. “I can’t believe you’re not a conservative who thinks just like me, there’s something wrong with you” is pointless, and poisonous.
It’d be like me going after Spud for “Too many negative posts about Sharpton, you must be a racist teabagger”, or “Oh God, another Megyn Kelly profile, is Fox paying you?” It’s useless comment content. You react to the article, or shut up. Reacting to every article you disagree with with “this site sucks” gets old fast.
August 24, 2011 at 2:46 pm
Doesn’t Mediate get the AOL and Yahoo crowd? I assumed that’s why their comments are so wacky. As for authors having their integrity attacked, at least that confirms that they must have at least some integrity on which to be attacked.
