Christiane Amanpour to Exit ABC’s This Week…Joins CNNI…

The New York Times’ Brian Stelter follows Page Six’s bread crumbs and reports that Amanpour is planning on exiting her Sunday show…thereby putting an end to one of the worst pairings of a host to a format not designed for said host since Katie Couric took over the CBS Evening News. The real question is will Amanpour exit ABC totally and if so is a return to CNN in the offing? The bonus question is whether ABC gives This Week to Jake Tapper or not. They better…

Christiane Amanpour is preparing to leave as the anchor of “This Week,” the Sunday morning news program on ABC, two people with knowledge of her plans said Tuesday.

Ms. Amanpour, a longtime international correspondent for CNN, joined ABC about a year and a half ago to anchor “This Week.” There, she replaced George Stephanopoulos, who had moved to the network’s weekday morning program “Good Morning America.”

Update: Stelter is now reporting that Amanpour is going to anchor on CNNI but will still have a role with ABC. Jake Tapper gets screwed by his network as George Stephanopoulos gets This Week.

Christiane Amanpour is leaving the anchor chair of ABC’s “This Week” and returning to her old network home, CNN, as the anchor of an evening newscast on CNN International.

The changes, confirmed Tuesday evening, come a year and a half after Ms. Amanpour surprised her colleagues at CNN by leaving the network to anchor “This Week,” the Sunday morning public affairs program on ABC.

There, she replaced George Stephanopoulos, who had moved to the ABC’s weekday morning program, “Good Morning America.” Mr. Stephanopoulos will return to anchor “This Week” while remaining on GMA.

Update 2: Statements from Amanpour and CNN Worldwide President Jim Walton…

Jim Walton statement:

Christiane Amanpour has been synonymous with international reporting and with CNN for many years. We could not be happier that through this unique arrangement with ABC News her experience and global perspective are returning to a nightly news broadcast for our international audience.

Jim Walton

President, CNN Worldwide

Christiane Amanpour statement:

This is an exciting and unique opportunity for me to take my love of story telling to primetime at ABC News with multiple specials, as well as becoming a roving Global Affairs anchor across all ABC platforms.

I am looking forward to getting back into the field to report stories on global issues that matter greatly to the American people. At the same time, I will be broadcasting once again to hundreds of millions of people across the world with a weekday show on CNN International.

This role is groundbreaking, bold and very different! I am thrilled and honored.

It’s been an incredible experience to have had a ringside seat to democracy in action at This Week. It’s been an incredible honor to anchor such a prestigious program and I thank all of you who have helped me on that journey.

  1. It is excruciating watching her on POLITICO’s “Turn the Table” videos. The extent to her political knowledge is whatever is on the NY Times’ front page. I don’t think she even reads the articles, just the headlines.

  2. lonestar77 Says:

I was wondering if this was ever going to happen. Is there a single person out there who actually liked her? I watched most Sundays but it was definitely in spite of Amanpour.

It’s not just that she’s a committed leftist, either. Her presentation, her voice, her looks, her posture, everything…she’s just awful.

  3. They’re giving it back to George Stephanopoulos. Sorry, Jake. You don’t have the years of journalistic credibility and impartiality that distinguish George’s career.

  4. If George really is getting in back, it will be through the election. Jake Tapper ought to take over, but ABC is going for the safe bet after the Amanpour error.

  5. lonestar77 Says:

Stephanopalous? Again? Terrible. Why do the networks make it so hard on themselves. Tapper is about the only representative of the MSM that plays it down the middle. So, of course he doesn’t get the job. It goes to the former Clintonista and lifelong Democrat.

  6. ABC’s love affair with Stephanopoulos is bewildering. Jake Tapper can actually ask a followup based on something the interviewee just said. George sticks to the script, no matter how much news is being made right in front of his face. This is ridiculous.

  7. I like Amanpour just fine and she is better suited for CNN. I am surprised this isn’t going to Tapper – her seems to be the most qualified and impartial. What does this mean for George’s role on GMA??

  8. Jake should look elsewhere. ABC does not deserve him. I could swear!

  9. Jake, my sympathies. You could kill David Gregory on This Week and have Meet the Press at least come in second.

ABC – what losers they are! My guess George had a deal that if CA sucked and left he got first dibs and there was no going back for the suits at ABC.

    What a shame.

On a totally other note: did anyone see CA’s hair last Sunday. Good Golly – who the heck was the stylist for her that day?

  10. My guess is that ABC sees Mr. Stephanopoulos as an expert on political affairs – and he is. Because he’s largely surrounded by people at ABC who closely share his basic perspective, he only needs to temper his own views ever-so-slightly in order to satisfy them that he’s acting as an impartial television journalist regarding political matters.

  11. Like I said they are giving it to Steph because he’s proven that he can host the show. This is probably just through the election. He will continue at GMA, though some reports say only for four days a week.

ABC is serious about beating NBC in the mornings, so it isn’t like Steph is leaving GMA and moving back to Washington.

  12. I don’t buy that, Josh. If they wanted to compete with NBC why go with the little man who needs a booster chair?

  13. ^ Bet they coulda gotten Gutfeld for half the money.

  14. ABC will never go for Gutfeld. Didn’t you hear him on The Five today? He had dinner with Donald Trump the other day -he thought when Trump’s people were calling it was a prank!

He has now gone to the dark side for most everyone except for those on Fox.

  15. Not a surprise with the 2012 elections coming up. I think the transition from Sawyer to Stephenopolus won’t be smooth – I think they just appeal to different demos. There might be hope for CBS News yet.

  16. last minute week end italia…
