It’s exhausting listening to this crap. Gov. Branstad repeatedly told Chuck Todd that the President removed the work requirement from Welfare To Work, and Todd repeatedly told him it’s simply not true. Doesn’t matter..Branstad just kept on rolling with it. IT DIDN’T HAPPEN. States were offered a waiver if – based on a stringent set of guidelines – they could meet the goals of the program in a way that created more jobs under their proposals than the federal government’s. That’s a conservative philosophy. But who cares? Just make stuff up.
August 15, 2012 at 7:18 am
Could what actually saves CNN be a transformation from this stiff, robotic news anchor format to a slightly more alive format?
Shepard Smith, even prior to the current era, was always fairly lively when doing Studio B or the FOX Report while being impartial. Even FOXs other programs back in the day, the endless hours of Fox News Live with Scott, Quinn, MacCallum, Skinner, and the rest just didn’t come off as unwatchable as an hour of Newsroom.
Even their evenings, I still don’t understand how people watch Erin, and Cooper just isn’t that great sitting behind an anchor desk. If they want to push their news chops, then anchor from the field more often, day or night, and just push that as a form of editorial. Take us places, do something more than the same stiff reports that could be misidentified as the same ones they did back in the earlier 2000s.

And we’re going to put black people in chains and give women cancer. So, you know, whatever.
August 15, 2012 at 8:51 am
I condemn both statements, and have already said so here about the “wife” ad. So, you know, whatever. When you’re responding to a commenter with a tit-for-tat example, it helps to do it against one who upholds the thing you’re compaining about.
August 15, 2012 at 9:11 am
But don’t worry, it’s all good because we’re racist.

Attacking – even unfairly – your opponent’s policies is one thing. Accusing them of being complicit in cancer deaths or or being felons or wanting to shackle people is quite another.
The Obama campaign is taking this in a dangerous direction. It truly does look like he wants to divide us and then try to assemble a 51% coalition from those pieces. Appeals to independent women here, black Americans there, gay folks here, scare seniors there. And hope that’ll be 271 electoral votes.
He may win but he won’t be able to govern.

August 15, 2012 at 9:15 am
He isn’t governing now, so why should he give a crap about then?
August 15, 2012 at 9:21 am
Mitt Romney set the stage with his scorched earth approach to obliterating his opponents in the primaries, then kicking off the general with an ad that had an Obama quote of John McCain taken out of context as being Obama’s own words. When confronted with it, Mitt produced his infamous “gander sauce” quote, basically saying “suck it”.
Now both sides are in competition to see how fast we can get to the bottom, gauranteeing that the divides get worse, and it won’t matter who wins because no one will be able to govern. Which is where we’ve been at for years, anyway.
I saw a tweet this morning (San Stein, I think) theorizing that both sides are in a “bring out the base” competition..ignoring the middle. He may be right: It’s hard to see the middle showing up for this mess.
August 15, 2012 at 9:23 am
There is no similarity between the Romney campaign’s lies about Obama’s policies and the Obama campaign’s lies about Romney as a person.
One is attacking public policies; the other is attacking the person.
No comparison.
August 15, 2012 at 9:26 am
That’s bull. Romney has been blatantly lying about the President since the first day of the campaign.
August 15, 2012 at 9:28 am
I don’t see any similarity between lying that Obama is removing the work requirements on welfare and lying that Romney is a felon who is complicit in the cancer death of a woman.
.
August 15, 2012 at 9:31 am
There is no comparison. It’s moral relativism. You can justify all sorts of carnage that way.
August 15, 2012 at 9:36 am
^Yes, and the Republicans will respond in kind.
This is how we got into this mess. One side does it and the other side imitates it. Then both can point to the other and say, “They did it too!!”
Obama is worse, in my view, because he emphatically ran on a campaign four years that promised to reject this nonsense. I believed him.
It was all a campaign strategy. He didn’t mean it.
August 15, 2012 at 9:37 am
based on a stringent set of guidelines
Here’s where your argument falls apart. In this case, the “stringent guidelines” are “predict that your plan will do better.” That’s it. There’s no probation period where the waiver is revoked if goals aren’t met. Just “tell us your plan will succeed and you’ll get the money.” That’s NOT a “conservative philosophy”.
August 15, 2012 at 9:39 am
he emphatically ran on a campaign four years that promised to reject this nonsense.
Yeah, but he didn’t really MEAN it. So who are you to hold it against him? /joe’d
August 15, 2012 at 9:42 am
Lies are lies. Let’s end it there.
And one who is willing to tell a little lie, is more willing to tell a big lie, than someone who is only willing to tell the truth.
Of course, without lies, we’d have no politicians.
August 15, 2012 at 9:44 am
^I fell for it hard, I admit. The first black president born at a time (1961) where black Americans in the south had to eat at segregated lunch counters. And were being lynched. And spit upon. Simply because of something they had nothing to do with: their skin color.
Someone who would appeal to our “better angels”.
I thought he could lead us to a different place.
Yeah, life isn’t a story, is it?
August 15, 2012 at 9:46 am

Though I guess if you’re playing Scrabble after having some special brownies you’d probably try to eat your letters. So that won’t work.

August 15, 2012 at 12:50 pm
@clindhartsen “Could what actually saves CNN be a transformation from this stiff, robotic news anchor format to a slightly more alive format?”
Gosh, I sure hope so. Isn’t that what made Anderson a famous news guy? Nowadays, he is unwatchable and honestly he seems totally pre-occupied with celebrities to bother with a serious CNN newscast. I agree, have them anchor more on the scene and for pete’s sake get out of NYC every once in a while.
August 15, 2012 at 2:27 pm
The shooter’s name is Floyd Corkins.
Brian Ross of ABC just announced that he used to play Floyd the Barber on the old Andy Griffith show.

Do not trust these people. Romney is telling the truth, Obama was against the Clinton era law and now is going outside the constitution to scuttle it.

Chris said he thinks Maher is one of the smartest people in the world.

August 15, 2012 at 5:00 pm
$722,000,000,000 it is. I’d love to have someone explain to me how taking money form Medicare to give other people insurance is going to help Medicare which is going broke as it is.
God, I hope the money isn’t coming from waste, fraud, and abuse, because that”s already been earmarked a dozen times.
August 15, 2012 at 5:34 pm
Sorry, haven’t had time to read through the comments so if this has been addressed…too farking bad.
Anyway, was listening to MSNBC on satellite radio on my way home and Mathews and Fineman were talking about the latest Biden brain fart. To be clear, the one about Republicans wanting to put black people in chains. Anyway, Fineman basically said that Republicans are racist for suggesting that Biden was using “coded” language. Thanks for playing, Howie.
August 15, 2012 at 5:40 pm
Former Democratic Virginia Governor Doug Wilder offered his criticism in an interview on CNN’s “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer” saying Biden’s remarks were racially-charged. Wilder is black.

Joe might agree with Fineman. Joe’s bias detector only is calibrated for FNC.
August 15, 2012 at 8:25 pm
The Romney approach today has been quite a sight. Anne looks very put out and pissed in her Rock Center interview, and Mitt – with the same stone-faced look – has been talking on the stump about “division, anger and hate”. The impression left is of a couple with a lofty sense of entitlement who seem genuinely angered that anyone dare question them.
If they have anyone on staff that they will listen to, that person better get on the “it’s morning in America” bandwagon fast. The American public is already bummed; this “anger, hate” stuff is gonna wear thin quick.
August 15, 2012 at 8:45 pm
Romney’s tried several times dipping in to this Obama hates America crap. How can anyone say only one sides is getting personal. Anyone with a brain can hear Romney say comments about Obama doesn’t believe in America and know exactly what he’s saying.
August 15, 2012 at 9:06 pm
if fit and dot are whining all must be well.
August 15, 2012 at 9:20 pm
If someone accused me of killing his wife, I’d call that hate.
August 15, 2012 at 9:46 pm
The point, point missers, is that using the word “hate” in a stump speech is a loser. But of course, nobody here seems to be able to follow simple sentences.
August 15, 2012 at 10:04 pm
And a VP suggesting that Republicans want to put African-Americans back in chains is even more of a loser.
August 15, 2012 at 10:09 pm
The word “hate” is only a loser when there isn’t at least a kernel of “true ring” to it. Given the publicity of the blatantly false accusations made against Romney, many are wondering to themselves about that now so this can be effective… provided they don’t keep it up for very long.
August 15, 2012 at 10:10 pm

^ And in that, I have a feeling the Republicans may be making a mistake… the same mistake they made last election. They’re going to overplay their hand, wind up getting what they want, and not realizing that what lingers behind it, is worse.
That was what happened with Hillary Clinton. The Republicans were so focused on her, they effectively pushed her out… only to find that Obama was much worse, and unstoppable. If they keep pushing now, they’ll get rid of Biden (who is a good weapon to use against Democrats), only to find out whomever Obama selects next, gives the ticket some sort of upper hand, and will make defeat almost impossible.
Slow your roll, guys. Or you’ll doom yourselves.

Wth is this woman on NOW wearing? A scarf might’ve been a good move, dear.
August 16, 2012 at 9:22 am
Sarah Palin was at her usual perch with her assistant Greta the other night, inexplicably encouraging Obama to drop Biden for Hillary and sail to re-election. That’s whatcha get for freezing Sarah out of the Republican Convention..
August 16, 2012 at 9:31 am
There’s only one person who will decide whether to keep or drop Joe Biden: Barack Obama.
And he’s not going to be influenced at all by anything Sarah Palin or the Republicans say.
He’s going to base that call on his own calculations and judgment.
In any case, for one of the few times in her life, Palin is right.
August 16, 2012 at 9:43 am
^That was directed at Blue.
I don’t see how Republican pushing is going to sway Obama at all.
I believe the Woodward book gave some details about how Obama was frustrated at Biden’s behavior. Anyone recall that? All of those Woodward books become a blur.
August 16, 2012 at 10:08 am
Mitt Romney is crazy. He got asked about the taxes again, and this time he stated he never paid less than 13% the last 10 years. Of course, he never says “income taxes”, which is what this is all about. I simply cannot see how he can continue to answer this question without producing his returns. He’s essentially saying, “I’m not showing you diddly, you’re just gonna have to trust me.” Sure, buddy.
August 16, 2012 at 10:10 am
@erich
You’re right. Obama won’t bend to Republican pressure. However, if the Republicans make enough of a deal, the public will turn greatly against Biden, and then Obama will be forced. He won’t bend to Republicans, only to the public.
August 16, 2012 at 10:16 am
Okay, got it.
Although I think the public – at least those undecideds that both campaigns are fighting over – probably block out Republican complaints about Biden. I.e., as partisan bickering, et cetera.
They may be swayed by Republican complaints but only marginally.
August 16, 2012 at 10:21 am
I don’t know what to think about the Biden-thing. So many people don’t even know who the Veep is, so it might just seem like he’s scared. Other hand, Hillary is kind of popular, mainly because people have forgotten what they didn’t like about her, which amuses me. So I have no idea.
August 16, 2012 at 10:27 am
I think moderate, independent woman really admire Hillary. For l’affair Lewinsky, for her steadfastness during the campaign four years ago and for her stewardship as Sec State. She’s visited a lot of hellholes around the world and has been impressive doing so.
If this is going to be a 271-269 electoral race (or whatever the closest it can be), that might just do it for Obama.
August 16, 2012 at 10:36 am
Biden made a big mistake with “chains”. He has a reputation for morphing into the language of whatever group he’s speaking to, like a person who starts sounding British when talking to a Brit. It caught him out bad this time. It’s hard to imagine him being replaced, though. Doing so would seem like a panic move by the administration. I suppose one possibility is that Biden himself could get a sobering poll, and tell the President he’s out.
August 16, 2012 at 10:40 am
He’s lucky to have the press on his side. You know, the same people who ran after Romney, screaming about “gaffes”..
August 16, 2012 at 11:09 am
Which is more offensive… the “chains” part, or the “ya’ll.”
Come on Joe. Who are you fooling?
August 16, 2012 at 11:16 am
Joe, I watched NOW. Which woman are you talking about who should have worn a scarf? Speaking of NOW, it is becoming just one big infomercial for Obama. At least Hannity has some liberals on his show. And on both MJ and NOW Paul Ryan was said to have spoken yesterday to “a crowd” of people at Miami U in Ohio. There were thousands of people there, but I guess MSNBC is not allowed to report this.
August 16, 2012 at 11:40 am
I suppose it’s good that Republicans are on this subject. No way does Obama want it to appear that he took our advice, whether it’s a good idea or not.
The problem that liberals have is that they accuse Republicans of racism/racial appeals/code/whatever so often that they think it’s acceptable to just say certain words outright. They do the same thing with “patriotism”. We’re always accused of questioning peoples’ patriotism, whether it’s valid or not. From that, liberals think that it’s okay to flat-out call people “unpatriotic”. That’s a minor subject and no one cares.. we’re just yapping at each other. Actual racial statement, on the other hand, people tend to notice.

Ryan is about 15 miles from my home today in North Canton. Much closer than me and the bat. Ohio is lots of fun at election time.

Lil Joey doesn’t know how to handle people who disagree with him.

Biden made a big mistake with “chains”. He has a reputation for morphing into the language of whatever group he’s speaking to,
But does he put on a slight Indian accent when going into a 7-11?
like a person who starts sounding British when talking to a Brit.
Considering how he (in)famously plagiarized a British Labour party dude’s speech, that’s not a surprise.
August 16, 2012 at 3:44 pm
Oh contrarie. I would say he is quite skilled at it.

I haven’t even started the day ’til someone disagrees with me. #bringit

If he was asked about taxes, then okay. But still, specifically mentioning Reid was pretty dumb. The man had only recently been returned to a well-deserved obscurity.

Wth was that “white board” thing today. There was some hodgepodge of numbers on the left side, then the “solution” on the right was “solvent”. Aren’t you supposed to have the “solvent” explanation, too?

I saw Imogen Lloyd Webber on Red Eye last night. She hasn’t been on FNC for at least a year. Did she finish her stint at MSNBC?
August 16, 2012 at 5:09 pm
^ I think so, Carol. Her gig was on Dylan Ratigan’s show. I don’t think I ever saw her anywhere else on that channel.
August 16, 2012 at 5:25 pm
I think I so her on some other MSNBC panels, but I’m not sure, so I’ll take your word for it, Joe.
August 16, 2012 at 5:26 pm
^I think I SAW her. Sorry.

FYI, no one has ever won an argument on the internet.
Or lost one for that matter.
It’s a bunch of knuckleheads arguing with other knuckleheads. Go to any site – politics, sports, dogs, food, health, sex…. half the people are yelling at one another.
Nothing more, nothing less.
August 16, 2012 at 5:54 pm
FYI Imogen Lloyd-Weber left MSNBC over a month ago. Johnny Dollar posted video of her discussing it w/Cavuto:

Everyone should read Dr.$

<i<Of course, he never says “income taxes”
He said at least 13%, 20% if charitable contributions are figured-in. What taxes other than “income” could he possibly be talking about?
-Replace Biden with Hillary-
It almost seems McCain & Palin had a previous phone conversation about this, knowing the president’s schedule. Repubs have no say whatsoever in who gets to be on Obama’s ticket but having Palin very publicly call for Biden to be replaced with McCain backing her up idn’t such a bad strategy.
It’s also a a great opportunity for Palin to goad the Dems along with the Late-Night hosts into heavily criticising her, which makes Romney/Ryan appear even more reasonable to the average voter.
August 16, 2012 at 7:14 pm
Ah, Romney was specifically asked about Harry Reid. Missed that on CNN. As the crazy-haired lady said…“Never mind..”.
August 16, 2012 at 8:13 pm
Thanks, Larry, for the Imogen video.

The president’s press secretary making fun of Sen. McCain won’t attract a single undecided voter but will probably put off a few who are truly on the fence. Keep it up, Carney, you’re doing great. Maybe try working that “inherited this economy” line in a few more times.
Leno: “The president keeps reminding voters that he inherited a bad economy. He better get to to fixing it right quick or he’s going to lose his inheritance come November.”
Elderly folk are quite fond of the name “Willard”. Smuckers.

The President inherited a disposition for excuse-making.
August 17, 2012 at 6:03 am
Fortunately for the President, most people remember the shythole the previous administration put this country in.

Many are remembering that they had pretty good jobs during the Bush years. They’re also beginning to think that the severe economic downturn was the direct result of an inflated housing market bubble bursting, not Bush’s policies. Has the added benefit of being the truth, and this especially goes for those who had voted for GWB once or twice.
