Howard Kurtz “Under Review” at CNN?

The Wrap’s Sharon Waxman reports that CNN is reviewing Howard Kurtz’s Daily Beast gaffe from earlier in the week…

Howard Kurtz and his weekly “Reliable Sources” media talk show are under review after his firing from The Daily Beast over erroneous reporting, a CNN spokeswoman told TheWrap on Thursday.

“We are reviewing it,” the spokeswoman told TheWrap.

Kurtz has long been one of the most respected media critics in the country. He spent 29 years at the Washington Post before being lured to run the Daily Beast’s Washington bureau. CNN has aired the show on media since 1992 and Kurtz has hosted it since 1998.

But the show has had its critics, and Kurtz is vulnerable after erroneously reporting in the Beast that gay basketball player Jason Collins “didn’t come clean” about the fact that he had been engaged, and later amended his post to say that Collins “downplayed” the engagement.

My prediction: Nothing comes of this review. This based on the fact that CNN stood by Fareed Zakaria last year after far more serious plagiarism charges were leveled at him. How can CNN possibly drop Kurtz over this comparatively less significant incident when it set the bar so high with Zakaria, without having everyone revisit the Zakaria incident and the apparent double standard that will be underscored? My read is CNN can’t do it and won’t do it.

  1. This is getting silly now. Kurtz has been making lazy mistakes for years. They’re just squeezing him and letting him twist in the breeze for a bit. Zucker is smart enough to know that if he drops Kurtz, he’ll be on every FNC show for days stoking a backlash.

  2. - lazy mistakes –

Like writing a book about the anchor transitions at the evening news programs right at the moment when it didn’t matter anymore. Yes, I actually read a book detailing the machinations behind Katie Couric, Brian Williams and (various ABC names here) taking over for Rather, Brokaw and Jennings. Scintillating.

  3. Zakaria has long been a darling of the intellectuals, Kurtz, the darling of no one. Zucker doesn’t need a mess. He isn’t firing Howie. When his contract is up, so is his CNN gig.

  4. If John king got to stay on after that major screw-up of his, I doubt they will touch this guy either. This network has really become such a joke. It’s like a celebrity tabloid.

  5. They will claim that they let him go. Then he will show back up in drag under the name Swoosie Kurtz.

The only two CNN shows I watch on a regular basis are Reliable Sources and Fareed Zakaria; so I hope Spud is correct.

My guess is he deals with the subject on RS in a ‘if anyone was offended’ apology or, If CNN wants to play hardball, a full apology, . He could get a short suspension but I doubt that will occur. He’ll only get fired if Zucker wants to dump him anyway (he’s not been shy in going after CNN recently – see John King) and uses this gaffe as the excuse.

If he did get dumped it wouldn’t surprise me to see him reappear on MSNBC with a similar style show.

  8. Howie actually put one of my “witticisms” up on the screen, so I do have a fondness bias:
