This Inauguration has not yet been rated by the MPAA

The Hollywood Reporter’s Paul J. Gough writes about MSNBC giving out tickets to watch the inauguration in select theaters around the country. This has to rank as one of the oddest marketing tie-ins in the history of cable news…

Free tickets are being handed out via MSNBC.com to see the inauguration and parade from 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. ET at the 27 theaters run by 11 exhibitor partners in 21 markets. Midday Tuesday isn’t necessarily a big movie time, so it helps to fill the theater — and boost popcorn and soda sales — at a time when it’s not usually busy.

That means that Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews and other MSNBC and NBC personalities will play the big movie screen in addition to the usual MSNBC cable and satellite stream. MSNBC won’t be in high-definition until the second quarter, but both the channel and Screenvision say the quality will still be high.

“It’ll look great,” MSNBC president Phil Griffin said. “We’re thrilled about it.”

Wow. This whole Obama adoration is bordering on cultish obsessiveness. Not just the movie theater thing, but the schools around the country that are renaming themselves after a man who hasn’t even served one day in the White House, etc.

  2. “This whole Obama adoration” may be warranted. How about waiting ’til he gets in office before deciding there’s a problem with him?

  3. It may be warranted, and it may not. As we said, the man hasn’t even been sworn into office, but elementary schools are already being renamed in his honor?

How about waiting ’til he gets in office before deciding the cultish worship is appropriate?

I don’t know where you are Joe, but if you had ever been to downtown NYC, esp. Union Square, since this past summer, you’d have seen all sorts of bizarre shrines set up to him, from t-shirts with images of him with halos surrounding his head to dolls and all sorts of things that could stock a stalker’s bedroom. Truly bizarre.

  4. Obama or not, this is really smart marketing. They took an event that many people are interested in and made it basically an invitation to get to know MSNBC. Will it work?

  5. We used to wait until people passed away before naming things after them. Harder for them to embarrass you when they’re gone. My state has a Cynthia McKinney highway, and she was embarrassing enough before her bubble popped(Not implying any similarity between the two.)

  6. The school-name changes are probably in African-American communities. I’m a white guy and won’t even begin to pass judgement on that. I doubt non-blacks can really imagine how big a deal this is to them.

  7. Some are in A-A communities, and some are not. But that’s beside the fact that he’s accomplished nothing other than getting elected and having a career of voting “present” on the tough issues.

dvschase: I have to agree with Spud that this is a goofy promotion.

More than likely it will be very cold in most parts of the country. I don’t know why anybody would want to leave a warm, toasty home to go to a theater to watch Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow!!

I’m sure you’ve all read how 0bama is trying to emulate President Lincoln in his inaugural activities, etc.

So if he’s such a great guy on his own, why does he have to copy a long-deceased Reoublican president? Fine, let him mimic some of Lincoln’s wisdom and character when making decisions for our country. But emulating the food Lincoln ate, his mode of travel, etc. is just eerie!

  11. He’s gonna eat the same food? OK, that IS weird.

  12. “…and bringing a sense of hope to a despairing nation and getting young people involved in government. Other than that, not so much.”

    BFD.

  13. BFD? Snappy comeback there Skippy.

  14. MAD magazine awaits.

It’s still a free country! While NBC is at it they should just put up voter registration tables and change all who enter over to Democrats. Objectivity in news is dead. The Democratic party couldn’t have a better propaganda machine.
