Canada vs. Red Eye?

The National Post’s Shane Dingman writes about Red Eye taking some shots at Canada and its mission to Afghanistan…

“We want an apology from this so-called comedian and his panel. These are despicable, hurtful and ignorant comments. No one is laughing and they owe Canada, and more importantly the families of each one of our fallen heroes, an apology for their ill-informed mistakes,” Dan Dugas, the spokesman for Defence Minister Peter MacKay, told Canwest News Service on Monday.

MacKay, along with Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean, was to attend the repatriation ceremony Monday at CFB Trenton, Ont., where the families of Canada’s four latest Afghanistan fatalities were to meet the flag-draped coffins of their fallen loved ones.

MacKay reiterated his call for an apology in a brief interview with CTV News.

Update: Gutfeld apologizes

A Fox News host is apologizing to Canadians in the face of widespread outrage over comments he and his guests made on a late-night talk show.

“Red Eye” host Greg Gutfeld says his comments “may have been misunderstood” and in no way were meant to disrespect “the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military.”

Fox News issued the Gutfeld statement just after the Canadian government demanded an apology for what it called the “despicable” and “disgusting” comments.

  1. Besides the specific comedy routine on the Canadian Armed forces, Gutless Gutfield needs to apologize for not being funny.

Maybe Gutless needs to work on some jokes about France or Spain, since they didn’t grab ankles on Iraq as well.

  2. Good, glad he apologized.

Yes, he needed to apologize. It’s OK to go after countries for SOME of their attributes, but the military of any country helping us in our efforts should be respected, and should be off-limits for “comedy” of any sort.

  4. Apology accepted.

Gee, I feel like the odd man out b/c I have such a completely different take on the whole incident which was discussed quite a bit at Johnny Dollars Place. I think this is a monstrous case of shoot the messenger and completely ignore the message.

First, the segment was based on an official Canadian statement of projections made for 2011. Greg read about 1/2 – 3/4 of the statement verbatim during the course of the segment so it was accurate.

Second, I never got the idea that anyone was condemning any soldiers but they showed no mercy to idea of the situation being reported by a first world country.

Third, I find it unbelievable that the reaction has been to shoot the messenger and ignore the totally startling message. Any government that projects that in less then 2 years they will put the entire military on sabbatical while they attempt to recoup and resupply should be a cause of concern and have big spotlights shined on it. The announcement said that by 2011 it is very possible that Canada will NOT have any operational tanks.

I laughed out loud at the segment b/c it sure beats crying. I was stunned that Canada has allowed themselves to get into such a situation. Stunned but not terribly surprised b/c virtually all Western Nations have depended on the USA for the bulk of their defense which gave them extra money to spend.

I think David Frum summed it up perfectly why this was so offensive.

I understand the sentiment but believe it is not apropos to what was said.

I think, based on some comments I’ve read, that many Canadians were first informed of this situation by Red Eye. Do you honestly believe the intention and purpose of the segment was to ridcule Canada’s fallen heros? I didn’t think so when I heard it and I still don’t think so.

I don’t know why they want to shoot the messenger. I’ve also been reading Canadian comments today that echo my sentiments but with much more vigor and anger. Evidently many Canadians believe the military was seriously under funded for 15 years a la our military under Clinton, albeit for only eight years.

The TiffanyinCanada YouTube User is a “White Supremacist” disquising as an Anti-Jihadist forum. We found a bunch of videos by him promoting “White Power” and racial bigotry….

I’m sure I’m missing something completely obvious but who/what is this and what is the relevance:

“The TiffanyinCanada YouTube User is a “White Supremacist” disquising as an Anti-Jihadist forum.”

TiffaninCanda is the Youtube user that causes this outrage on Youtube over the comments on Red Eye…
