Just Askin’…
Did CNN, FNC, or MSNBC do pre-confimation hearing specials on John Roberts or Samuel Alito? If not, why does Sotomayor merit a special by FNC?

I don’t remember any specials. But Sotomayor may be different (being a latina).

Make that WISE latina, corny.

Maybe it’s just that the cable news cycle has become an increasingly vicious ratings game since those two nominees had their hearings. There was no need for round-the-clock coverage back then — at least, the cablers didn’t see it that way. We may have wanted it, but there was no desperate need on the part of the cablers to provide it.

It probably has something to do with her polling:
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/07/10/cnn-poll-do-americans-want-sotomayor-confirmed/
Only 47% want her confirmed. One of the lowest ratings ever. Intersting that Independent votes are evenly split on her.
She has many racist statements she’s made.
Truth be told, if the shoe were on the other foot, the Republican nominee wouldn’t even get up to having hearings if they had made the type of racist statements she has made.
Be nice to see her nomination pulled.

I can think of two reasons.
Most importantly, it’s a slow news period. Michael Jackson is the only hot story right now. And people are already sick of it.
Second, she’s very controversial to FNC viewers. They’ll hit her over the head for the entire confirmation hearings. And if she winds up getting Borked, that’ll be huge news for all the cable channels (but especially big for FNC).

I take issue with this part of the question, Spud: “If not, why does Sotomayor merit a special by FNC?”
Isn’t this potentially a good thing? After weeks of MJ coverage, and news that wasn’t really news… this seems to be actual news about something genuinely important! This seems on its face (quality and content to be judged -pun- later) like a good thing, and the correct step for a 24-hour news network, no?
Just because there wasn’t one (if there wasn’t one… J$ would be the man to answer that question), doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be one now… perhaps this shows growth and interest… things we should applaud.

Is this a rhetorical question?
The Dems keep telling us about her fascinating “life story”, so it sounds like they think she merits news specials about her.
Les Nessman, showing he’s not just a great farm reporter & very deserving of the Silver Sow, nails it.
She’s a controversial pick. Her approval #’s are at Harriet Myers levels. There hasn’t been much coverage on her the past few weeks because of Iran & then Michael Jackson.
I’d like to know more about her and I’m glad they aired the special.

If not for the democrat majority in the Senate, I don’t know how she could overcome those “wise latina” comments she made on so many occasions.
They make her sound more Hispanic than American. That would be fine, but NOT if the job you’re seeking is to be a justice in the SCOTUS. Her words sound like she’s brining a ton of bias of thought and opinion with her.

If she’s so ‘controversial’, why does Lindsay Graham think she’s a shoe-in, barring ‘a complete meltdown’?
July 13, 2009 at 11:11 am
Umm….because the Dems have a filibuster proof majority???
