What’s Hot/What’s Not: 07/12/09
It was a pretty thin week except for one thing…
What’s Hot:
Michael Jackson – Jackson’s funeral was, to coin a phrase that some might find in bad taste but I’m going to use it anyways, covered to death.
What’s Not:
Michael Jackson – No mas, No mas!

RE: “Hot”
Really disappointed in you, Spud. If that’s your feeling, you could have gone with something more appropriate than, “Done to death.”
You could have said it was “Off The Wall” or “Bad.” That they are trying to find too many angles to cover the story, when it’s simply “Black or White.” Heck, you could have said “Remember The Time” when the news nets covered news, and this stuff makes you want to “Scream.”
I can’t believe you’d actually say something like that. But, before this topic is “Gone Too Soon,” I want to remind everyone, this was a part of our “History.” I say the networks should keep on going, “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” coverage is my philosophy.
Sorry to get in your face about this, Spud… it’s just “The Way You Make Me Feel.” To say something so outrageous like there has been too much coverage, well… it says to me you “Wanna Be Startin’ Something,” and frankly… that’s just “Dangerous.”
AND NOW… we’ve had enough…

I don’t know which is more disturbing…the non-stop coverage, or the fact that INB is so familiar with MJ’s music.

I was born in ’82… I grew up on three musical acts: Billy Joel, Genesis, and Michael Jackson. It was all adult contempo-pop in the INB house.
“Dangerous” was the first CD I ever purchased… and soon there after tried to read “Moonwalker”… MJ’s autobiography (but the thing was like 1000 pages, so I only made it halfway).
As a kid… MJ was never far from my stereo. When he died, it wasn’t just another entertainer who died… although it wasn’t the great humanitarian or any of that other BS they’re trying to sell now either. What died was that part of my childhood… the soundtrack of my early years.
Two weeks ago, “The Simpsons” showed the original “Bartman” music video (remember that, from the early days of “The Simpsons?”) before the episode began. Story goes, Jackson called the show’s producer saying he was a big fan, and offered to write a number one hit for Bart to sing… and that’s exactly what happened. Watching it, I actually got pretty choked up… but not because MJ had his hand in it… but because I remember seeing it for the first time years and years ago. I remember owning the cassette that song was on, and listening to it all the time.
See… it’s not MJ that the people are really celebrating now (although, the news networks haven’t figured it out, and publicity hounds are just trying to keep their face above the fold)… it’s that little bit of their past that somehow now feels even more gone, than before.
All that said… the coverage is too much and they need to knock it off already. Tell me where the kids go, tell me what killed him, and let me know when I can go tour Neverland… beyond that, we’re done.

But then it wouldn’t have expressed my feelings…and it wouldn’t have been “unvarnished”…

“Unvarnished” does not mean “without puns,” my friend. 😉
