What’s Hot/What’s Not: 06/06/10

What’s Hot:

In your face! No, in YOUR face! – CNN and MSNBC put out May ratings releases pointedly noting each other’s weak spots while FNC quietly sat on the sidelines watching the two networks attempt to cut each other up.

Jeff Zucker’s days numbered? – Page Six reported, despite GE denials, that Jeff Zucker now has an “exit deal” in place which suggests that Zucker is not part of Comcast’s long range plans. If Zucker goes, he will be just the first domino to fall. Zucker is connected to a lot of people at NBC who wouldn’t otherwise be where they are if he wasn’t there. If he leaves their positions suddenly become a lot more tenuous and susceptible to a Comcast “house cleaning”. A Zucker departure could instigate a wholesale series of behind the scenes maneuvering and turf wars as those who owe Zucker their jobs fight for their very survival.

What’s Not:

Another O’Reilly controversy – Usually O’Reilly’s controversies are pretty straight forward. But this latest one, involving O’Reilly allegedly comparing Homosexuality to Al Queda in reference to a McDonald’s ad, is way overblown and not very accurate.

Tony Hayward – You want your life back? Resign. Haward deservedly caught a ton of negative flak for that ill-thought out soundbite, none worse that the blowback that came from Shepard Smith…

Helen Thomas – She’s put her foot in it many times over the past decade but this time she’s really done it.

Bud Selig – ’nuff said…

Joran Van Der Sloot arrested – Van Der Sloot’s arrest in Peru guarantees that Nancy Grace and Greta Van Susteren will not be lacking for subject matter the next couple of weeks…

It doesn’t get much Hotter, and less consequential, than Van Der Sluut. Greta has been on a nearly-endless-loop all weekend, and now they’re talking ‘serial-killer’. Manna from Hell for the true-crime-babes.

  2. We haven’t followed the Van Der Sloot thing for a very long time, but is he now a suspect in other murders (besides Natalee Holloway and this recent one)?

Too bad the police in Aruba are a bunch of bungling morons.

  3. -Manna from Hell-

Van der Sluut-Goin’-Dutch is a compelling crime story. With all due condolences to the families of the victims, I’m sick of hearing about it.

As for the Hot/Not list, well done!

Helen Thomas. I could almost feel sorry for her. She was a pioneering-figure for women in journalism, and now people will remember her the way they do Jimmy the Greek. Justifiably, but still.

the only reason fnc kept its mouth shut is because it bled viewers!

I would just add to the “not” list – the cancellation of FBN’s Happy Hour. No more Rebecca Diamond, Nichole Pedilledes, Sandra Smith, etc. gracing those bar stools.

  7. Jay Leno on Helen Thomas’ retirement:

“Let me be the first to say, ‘mazal tov’.”

  8. laura l Says:

    — ‘mazal tov —

And don’t let the door hitcha.
