O’Donnell: The “NASCAR Crash” Factor…
Hot Air’s Allah Pundit offers an interesting analysis for why Lawrence O’Donnell could be the right choice for 10 pm…
What makes this choice intriguing in a way that no other “Countdown” retread could possibly be is one simple thing: When O’Donnell’s temper is triggered, he’s insane. Remember the time he went off on the late Cathy Seipp over public-school teachers and the blogosphere spent the next day or two laughing at his throbbing neck vein? Or the time he spent a segment screeching “liar” repeatedly while John O’Neill tried to get a word in edgewise? Or when he started barking at a GOP consultant about being a chickenhawk? Or just a few months ago, when he had a meltdown on “Morning Joe” over Marc Thiessen’s opinions on counterterrorism and Scarborough was actually forced to cut him off? “Scary Larry” is the very definition of an unhinged liberal when his Irish is up, which can be wildly entertaining if you’re in the mood. Hence my point up above about doing the show right. Is this going to be another Olby-esque hour of propaganda where a bunch of liberal analysts tell O’D what he wants to hear? Or are they going to do something smart and have on a bunch of conservative analysts to see just how far they can make Larry’s neck vein bulge? That would be worth watching. And clipping, and posting. Every night!
Call me an optimist but I hope we as a viewing nation haven’t degenerated to the point where someone gets big numbers because his head explodes all the time. Not even O’Reilly does that consistently. Neither does Ed Schultz. “Scarry Larry”, if the euphemism is truly applicable (I have no opinion), as a format one hopes would wear thin real fast.

Oh goodie, I get to use a NASCAR analogy. The “crash factor” at a race is one occasional result of watching an otherwise interesting product. A. If it doesn’t happen, you still got a good show (unless it’s Michigan Speedway). B. “The Crash” is not predictable, which is part of the excitement.
A boring show with a planned “crash” is not my idea of smart programming.

^ And O’Donnell is a planned crash.

^Good one. 😉

Olby seems bland compared to him. We remember when he used to be a regular on the “McLaughlin Group” and seemed sane. But at some point, he just went off the rails.
We first noticed just how completely unhinged he’d become with that “LIAR! LIAR! LIAR!” tantrum.
He’s the kind of guy that makes most people put their hands up in the air and sloooowly back away.

“He’s the kind of guy that makes most people put their hands up in the air and sloooowly back away.”
Glenn Beck anyone?
June 15, 2010 at 7:12 pm
Really? When was the last time Beck had a freak out like that and went apes–t on a guest, screaming like a mental patient?
June 15, 2010 at 7:38 pm
So, how is this any different a format or personality than how O’Reilly used to be, cutting people off, yelling at them, telling them to shut up before he finishes them (even after he already cut them off first)? Granted, he doesn’t act like that as much anymore, but I’m sure if he still has it in him, he’d have those classic blowups, again.

You obviously don’t watch as much Glenn Beck as we thought, boogie.
This one is a classic. Watch and enjoy.

With O’Donnell at 10pm and Shuster killing time till he’s kicked out the door, who’s going to be the designated fill-in on days when Olbermann stays in the tub?
June 15, 2010 at 8:33 pm
I wonder how happy KO is about this..with his repeat now moved to 11pm against O’Reilly’s repeat which means Bill will kick KO’s butt twice a night and his over all combined ratings for the two airings will be even lower.
June 15, 2010 at 8:34 pm
Why not hire Jesse Ventura? He’s insane enough to be a star at that place.
June 15, 2010 at 10:23 pm
Just another Bush, Chenny, palin, Beck, Hannity, Big O, conservative hater on the msnbc pundit lineup. what really new, please.
June 16, 2010 at 12:52 am
ouchboy: Kind of like the Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Democrat, liberal, progressive (did I mention Obama?) haters at Fox News? Why don’t you pipe down and deal with it since your band of haters, who you probably have daily wet dreams about, spew their hatred so much as it is… and now we’ve added another one to go up against yours. BAM!

You obviously don’t watch as much Glenn Beck as we thought, boogie.
You obviously watch a lot, especially for someone who seems to loathe him.

I like O’Donnell, there isn’t any drop-off when he fills in. I just wonder why MSNBC picked another NY-Wash political insider for that slot.
I’m guessing he might have had an offer from CNN or somewhere else and MSNBC had to do something.
Still would have been refreshing to see a new face on cable news, perhaps focusing on politics/news from somewhere west of the Appalachians, who doesn’t talk to the same people everyone else talks to, etc.
I’m still waiting for someone to try a multi-host format in primetime, perhaps with rotating guest hosts.

Yeah, but he lives in Los Angeles. He was one of the writers for the TV show “West Wing”. And he hasn’t been inside the DC scene for more than 15 years when he worked for Moynihan and the Senate.
Besides, other than Matthews all of the hosts are really outsiders. Schultz, Olbermann, Maddow? Not exactly DC figures.
But I agree: he’s hardly a fresh face.

dougieness; the difference between msnbc pundits and fox pundits are, liberal msnbc pundits calls fox pundits liars, personal dirty names ,bias and or crackpots and so fourth for reporting the truth. Fox pundits for the most part only identifies msnbc pundits as nbc reporting the news and policies from a liberal bias point of view. You know I’am right, you just don’t want to see the truth because of your own polical views.
Hannity is the only fox pundit that gets really personal with name calling with that Rob dead fish Emanuel name he likes to use.
