Izzy Povich Tapped to Helm O’Donnell Show…

Michael Calderone tweets the following…

MSNBC names Izzy Povich senior EP for new Lawrence O’Donnell show

Nothing on the blogs or from MSNBC on this yet.

Update: Mediaite’s Steve Krakauer writes that Povich is leaving as EP of Countdown for O’Donnell’s show…

There’s really two stories here, Povich joining O’Donnell and Povich leaving Countdown. Not that this was entirely unexpected but Povich leaving Countdown is huge. You don’t usually see EPs leaving the network’s flagship primetime show for a new show that is totally unproven. As a network exec you don’t want to make the switch because you don’t want to potentially upset the applecart for the flagship show, unless you have to. This suggests that there may be a story here to be written concerning what’s been going on with Countdown that would force this move.

Note to Krakauer: I don’t know whether to feel honored that you remembered that blind item or annoyed that you could re-use it before I could.

Update 2: According to the release Krakauer noted, Povich has been named Senior Executive Producer. But that’s not a title someone with day to day oversight tends to have. Which raises another question: Was Povich kicked upstairs?

Update 3: TVNewser’s Chris Ariens writes that another staffer for Countdown may be leaving the show. This too was mentioned in my blind item.

Update 4: Ok, here’s my copy of the release which for some stupid reason I found in my Gmail spam folder and not the main in box. This drives me nuts. Here I am waiting for either Mediaite or TVNewser to come up with the info and I had it all along but didn’t know it. Sigh…

NEW YORK – July 19, 2010 – Izzy Povich has been named Senior Executive Producer of Lawrence O’Donnell’s new program, which will debut this fall at 10 pm ET on MSNBC. The announcement was made by Phil Griffin, President of MSNBC and is effective immediately.

“Izzy has done a tremendous job for years on ‘Countdown’ and is a key member of my team,” said Griffin. “She’s the perfect person to take on the challenge of launching Lawrence’s show and help take MSNBC to the next level.”

Povich was previously Executive Producer of “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” since February 2004. A new Executive Producer of “Countdown” will be named at a later date. As Executive Producer of “Countdown,” Povich oversaw all editorial content for the show. Prior to her current role, Povich served as a Senior Producer for “Countdown” from the program’s launch in 2003.

Povich joined MSNBC in 1996 and in 1998, she became the Senior Producer for the MSNBC Central Booking Unit. From 2000-2003, Povich served as Senior Producer and Supervising Producer for several MSNBC programs.

Povich began her career as an account executive for Ogilvy and Mather Public Relations in 1989 and as an associate producer for WNBC New York in 1990, before serving as a producer on “The Maury Povich Show” from 1992-1996. She also served as a producer for CBS’s “Day and Date” in 1996.

Povich holds a Bachelor of Science from Cornell University. She is married to Andrew Povich, and has two children, Molly and Ben.

Wasn’t Povich the EP of Countdown back in its early days?

  2. I guess they just want to make sure that LOD’s show will be a bigger success than people expect. Whether that will happen with a great EP is questionable, but it makes it more possible.

  3. joeremi Says:

The show will be great…if they replace the host. He talks like Wolf Blitzer. Yeah..that’s something we need more of.

  4. mlong5000 Says:

Maybe Povich is just had it with KO stunts..like throwing a 2 week temper tantrum because he got pawned by Tucker (wonder if Povich is one of those MSNBCers behind the scenes giving Tucker high 5’s for that?).

  5. joeremi Says:

^Making stuff up again, are we? He went on vacation. People do that during the summer.

  6. The Tucker stunt is already old news. I doubt the link to Daily Caller will even be active by the time KO returns from vacation.
