John Roberts out at American Morning? Tony Harris out at CNN?

Page Six reports that John Roberts is negotiating a new contract which would take him off American Morning and Tony Harris is leaving the network…

Shake-ups at CNN under new boss Ken Jautz will begin as early as the start of the new year, insiders say. John Roberts is finalizing a contract to leave “American Morning” and start a new life as a CNN national correspondent in Atlanta, where his pregnant fiancée, Kyra Phillips, anchors “CNN Newsroom.” Insiders speculate that handsome newsreader T.J. Holmes, who filled in for Roberts yesterday, is one of the favorites to take over Roberts’ role and anchor alongside Kiran Chetry. “T.J. Holmes has always been groomed for a bigger gig,” an insider told us. Sources also said “CNN Newsroom” anchor Tony Harris will announce to his staff today that he’s leaving the network after six years. Harris, who anchors from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., is expected to leave at the end of the month. A rep for the net work said, “CNN does not comment on con tracts.”

I like T.J. Holmes but Holmes selection would run against the grain in terms of fill-ins who’ve shown up on American Morning the most which is usually a barometer, though not the only barometer, of who’s being evaluated.

Last night I took to Twitter and suggested that there weren’t changes coming to American Morning any time soon because CNN just started running new TV spots featuring Roberts and Chetry with the new AM graphics. Obviously that prognostication may turn out to be misguided in light of this story. But the question that I would have if that is the case is why would CNN throw money away on new spots on the talent for a show when at least 1/2 the talent is leaving?

  1. Did they really launch new ads? Or were these the same ones with the new graphics (showing the prep for the show) that have been running for months?

Doesn’t cost much money to do a promo… I’m sure they do them in-house. The bigger question is why would they launch a new campaign to promote a team that won’t be there much longer.

Maybe the spots were done a while ago and they decided to use ’em or lose ’em? Translation: Maybe JK was in charge then and Jautz is just trying to clean up his dirty diaper.

T.J. Holmes is great.. That said, I’m glad CNN finally is getting rid of that joker Tony Harris.

Btw, what ever happened to Chetry “being the problem”? Perhaps CNN doesn’t have anything else for her to do?

Finally, how can Roberts be a “national correspondent” based in Atlanta? Since when is Atlanta the epic center of news? Unless of course he’s going to travel?

I think John Roberts will anchor from Atlanta. Being a correspondent would suck and be a step down from his current gig, IMO.

Why is Don Lemon on weekends? I was expecting him to be someone getting a weekday anchor slot .

  5. He had one. Then they took it away from him.

  6. IMO, Lemon really isn’t that good at all. He seems to get flustered quite a bit.. But, it seems to be working for Kyra Phillips. So, what do I know?

  7. […] contrast that with what happened with John Roberts. First world leaks out that Roberts is leaving American Morning and CNN issues a “No Comment”. So far, so […]

Tony Harris {GONE}, John Roberts {GONE}. Didn’t know John Roberts was married to Kyra Phillips. Neither John nor Kyra are choice journalists from my perspective. Tony Harris appeared to have been too much of a passive “YES-man,” perhaps too much for Ken Jautz’s as he’s out as well..:-)

Who is Ken Jautz? Well according to attached article he’s the man that gave Glen Beck a 7pm gig on Headline News. This says a lot about Mr. Jautz in my view, as does speak to the direction in which CNN apparently wants to go; further away from the purported center CNN has so vehemently claimed and perhaps more to the far right where Fox has been eating their lunch. The lack of a strong bottom-line brings about equally strong changes. See article at http://www.thewrap.com/media/column-post/ken-jautz-cnn-future-21202. Interesting to say the least.
