Phil Griffin Interview…

Forbes’ Jeff Bercovici interviews MSNBC President Phil Griffin. Red meat quote:

What part has Fox News played in your strategic thinking? Are they a model for you, or a bete noire, or a cautionary tale?

I think what they’ve done has been pretty incredible over the last 15 years. They saw an opening and grabbed it, the whole area of conservatives who felt disenfranchised, and they own it. I don’t agree with how they approach news, because I don’t always think they base it in fact, but I respect how they went out and got this huge audience. I think I’ve looked at them and recognized that you’ve got to find your space. I don’t think there’s equivalency between Fox and MSNBC, although I do think a lot of people are glad there is an MSNBC to take on the big, bad Fox. I don’t think we’re nearly as based in ideology the way they are, but we definitely have tried to find a space the way they found their space.

Shut up, Phil. Get back to me when you actually have a news division. It’s 24 hours of opinion, except for the prison documentaries.

  2. Phil is right. There is no equivalency between Fox and MSNBC.

MSNBC runs low quality opinion shows based around a single person almost all day (Morning Joe, then Ratigan until the next morning’s First Look), whereas FNC runs news shows like Special Report and the Fox Report.

This is less about ideology and more about structure. MSNBC is an offshoot of NBC News whereas FNC is the heart of the organization.

    ^Chris Jansing ain’t half bad.

That’s not true Lonestar, they also run TO CATCH A PREDATOR alot. Although most of those guys do end up going to prison ;).

    ^ lol. Good point.

  6. No wonder I confuse Lonestar and starbroker so easily… they like to parrot the same talking points. I especially love Lonestar’s claim of MSNBC being 24 hours of opinion. I guess they’ve never watched Chuck Todd, Chris Jansing, Richard Lui, Thomas Roberts, Contessa Brewer, Andrea Mitchell, Tamron Hall, and (to an extent) Martin Bashir who all basically run straight news programs in the morning/daytime hours. Bashir is an exception, but he does have a straight reporter’s style.

But, as far as the others go, they are all perfectly straight in their reporting and always bring on Republicans/conservatives to debate them fairly without taking talking points from a Bill Sammon-esque boss. Do they all have an opinion? Of course… they’re human, and we are capable of repeating opinions. However, to claim it’s 24 hours of opinion is patently absurd and false, and I’d think Lonestar wouldn’t want to make a fool out of themselves with that ridiculous assertion. Starbroker, I just expect to say ludicrous things.

By the way, Lonestar, if you want to crow about MSNBC in that way, what do you say about the morning/daytime hours for Fox with hosts like Martha MacCallum, Bill Hemmer, Jenna Lee, Megyn Kelly, Jon Scott, etc.? Does that make their programming 24 hours opinion, as well? I’m sure you’ll give them a pass.

Of course he will, Prog. The “right” POV on FNC is different because it’s THE TRUTH. Welcome to the merry-go-round no one ever gets off of. You’re wise to not come here and battle it out all the time. I – as some of my friends will attest – am an idiot..

Unfortunately, I have seen all of them. Funny you say “to an extent Martin Bashir”. He’s as bad as Ed Schultz. He’s totally off the reservation. Contessa Brewer (you mean Mini Keith)? Andrea “Biased” Mitchell, Tamaron Hall…. All of those you named are drinking the KOOL AID over there. Of course Bashir, Contessa, Mitchell and Hall being the worst of them….

Thomas Roberts –the moron who didn’t even know LBJ was ELECTED CIC. The openly “HAPPY” anchor who always is going on about marriage equality etc.

Tell me ONE MSNBC “newser” who isn’t left wing on all the social issues? Name just one!

Fox News has a liberal on social issues anchoring 3 or 4 hours of their “straight news”.

The closet anyone in the group mentioned above comes to being an unbiased newsperson is Chuck Todd. I don’t watch Jansing so I can only judge her by the company she keeps. The rest are flaming liberals.

The daytime lineup at FNC isn’t anymore biased than what you’ll find at the big 3 networks. It just seems radically different to you because you’re accustomed to watching all lefties, all the time.

The monopoly is over. The left can’t deal with it. Tough shiite.

Great job, Star. All those claims, zero examples. That must have taken a lot of effort.

Thomas Roberts –the moron who didn’t even know LBJ was ELECTED CIC. The openly “HAPPY” anchor who always is going on about marriage equality etc.

First of all, Roberts’ stance on gay rights is a civil rights issue, not a liberal one. There are conservative Republicans who agree with more rights for gay people, and it has nothing to do with liberal or conservative. Second, what does Roberts knowing anything about LBJ have to do with whether he states his opinion or not? Fail.

Tell me ONE MSNBC “newser” who isn’t left wing on all the social issues? Name just one!

Have you ever watched Chris Jansing? You didn’t even mention her in your list of anchors that are “drinking the KOOL AID”. How convenient for you. I’ve never heard her state an opinion that isn’t a straight and fair judgment of the news.

Fox News has a liberal on social issues anchoring 3 or 4 hours of their “straight news”.

Who is this?? Are you talking about Shepard Smith? He hosts two hours, not 3 or 4, and he’s the closest to anything that network has to a liberal on weekdays. Do you even watch Fox News?

The closet anyone in the group mentioned above comes to being an unbiased newsperson is Chuck Todd. I don’t watch Jansing so I can only judge her by the company she keeps. The rest are flaming liberals.

Well ask anybody who knows anything about cable news hosts (i.e. Spud), and they will tell you how straight of a news anchor Jansing is.

The daytime lineup at FNC isn’t anymore biased than what you’ll find at the big 3 networks. It just seems radically different to you because you’re accustomed to watching all lefties, all the time.

So, Hemmer, Scott, MacCallum, Megyn Kelly and all those other supposedly straight news anchors are all perfectly fair in their reporting with no bias? If you’re actually stupid enough to think that, you won’t be convinced of anything that’s going on in reality. Hopeless case.

  11. paminwi Says:

Where is fred when someones compliments Chris Jansing?

    Fred we’re waiting for you!

  12. lonestar77 Says:

I’ll give you Jansing, like I said, I don’t watch her. I was making a joke about guilt by association.

“So, Hemmer, Scott, MacCallum, Megyn Kelly and all those other supposedly straight news anchors are all perfectly fair in their reporting with no bias?”

I said they’re no more biased than any of the news people at the big 3 networks. It’s not a coincidence that conservatives complain about liberal bias and whenever any of these people retire, Cronkite, Rather, Brokaw, etc. they come out as unabashed liberals. Everyone of the current anchors are undoubtedly biased to the left. The people at FNC look so radical to you because it’s a radical departure from the liberal monopoly.
