Talking Head Primetime Invades Daytime: Chapter 11

This one comes courtesy of MSNBC’s Thomas Roberts and is predictably catching fire on the right side of the blogosphere. This is the problematic part…

THOMAS ROBERTS: Well, that is something that affects everybody across this country. It doesn’t have to be – it doesn’t have to be with the LGBT community, it talks about all Americans. But I do want to talk about what GOProud is doing in reaching out an invitation to Michele Bachmann to take a meeting. Where does that stand right now? Has the Bachmann camp gotten back to you? Will they meet with you?

JIMMY LASALVIA: Well, at this point we are having a dialogue with them. And when there’s something to report, I’ll let you know. You know, we’re reaching out to all of the presidential candidates because, frankly, gay Americans are living in the Obama economy too, and it’s important that we beat him next November and replace this failed president. So we’re reaching out –

ROBERTS: But you will replace him with a person that would extinguish you. You’re replacing him with a person that doesn’t believe that that you have a right in this country to get married, that believes you don’t even have a right in this country to be gay because she co-owns a clinic that will convert you.

LASALVIA: Well, I think all the presidential candidates should hear our perspective as gay Americans who, like you, live our lives openly and honestly because we bring a unique perspective to our American experience. And I think it’s important for anyone running for that office to hear that perspective.

It’s not quite to the level of Ed Schultz screaming that the “Republican party wants to see you dead” but it’s in the ballpark. Roberts clearly feels passionately about this issue but more restraint is called for on dayside news. “Extinguish” was an extremely poor word choice on his part. If Roberts wants to take on more of an advocacy role he’s free to do so…on primetime where that kind of vitriolic rhetoric is all too common. It doesn’t have a place on a straight news hour.

I don’t have a problem with him acting like Ed Schultz in the afternoon. The problem I have with MSNBC is they let their people who are supposedly doing straight news masquerade with opinion shows. They should just come out and say, we don’t do any straight news. We are opinion news all day long.

Also, take issue with them putting Bachman stuff up with Hate Crime Controversy. I would have liked to have seen the whole video. I’m certainly happy the head of GOProud disagreed with the pathetic hate crime laws (aka “thought crimes).

Isn’t it interesting, Thomas is complaining about his rights and yet Thomas has no problem and he loves the “special rights” he gets from hate crime laws etc. He’s “protected”.

And Thomas gets so many things wrong but of course other than the horrible extinguish comment he throws out there… the clinic. So what?! He’s acting like her husband is going around with armed men…rounding them up and bringing them in against their will to “convert them”. He doesn’t say these are people who willingly come in and its their desire to change.

What if Bachman’s husband ran some exercise clinic? Would Thomas say she thinks you don’t have a right to be fat? What if her husband was a Baptist preacher? would he say, she thinks nobody has a right to not be saved? It’s nonsense!

(side note–Newsbusters story–I probably wouldn’t have used the headline they did…. but Thomas should have paid attention to what the head of GOProud was saying and should have used “she” everytime instead of person.)

“You’re replacing him with a person that doesn’t believe that that you have a right in this country to get married”

Obama doesn’t believe in that right either, and if Roberts were an actual journalist instead of an advocate, he’d have said that.

“LASALVIA: Well, I think all the presidential candidates should hear our perspective as g@y Americans who, like you, live our lives openly and honestly”

So, Roberts g@y? Am I reading that correctly? The MSNBC “news” people don’t cover the issue anywhere close to fairly. Between Brewer & Roberts, you may as well be watching a San Francisco pride rally.

  4. Could we please drop the “Obama is against it, too!” business? Everyone knows he’s lying until the polls change, then he’ll have a sudden epiphany. No Democrat runs with their liberalism fully stated, or they couldn’t get elected.

  5. harry1420 Says:

wow when someone else starts stating their opinion the fox watchers have a cow and whine about it. fox people give their opinions during ‘straight’ news hours all day long. what’s the difference here…ah, it’s on msnbc…geezz

  6. lonestar77 Says:

^ yep, Fox journalists are always accusing Dem candidates of potential genocide.

  7. mlong5000 Says:

No the difference is FOX is bashed for it’s biased reporting but CNN and MSNBC do it too but don’t get nearly the same level of grief over it.

  8. stevemg Says:

Our blog host Spud has been pretty consistent in condemning the mix of opinion with news every time any news anchor/reporter on any of the networks engages in it.

I dare say he’s been more consistent on this then our liberal commentators here. Yeah, conservative ones too.

Second, and more important, this news anchor accused one of the leading Presidential candidates of wanting to “extinguish” millions of Americans. Extinguish as in wipe out. Eliminate. Remove.

That’s about as serious a charge as one can make on a public figure.

Where is his evidence that Rep. Bachmann wants to “extinguish” all of these people? Where is her plan? Her policies to do that?

He has none. It’s call defamation and he should be suspended from MSNBC for doing it.

Yeah, fat chance. Calling the President a “d***” will get you suspended but accusing a Congresswoman of wanting to engage in mass murder is just peachy keen.

  9. joeremi Says:

Oh please. I agree that Roberts overstepped his bounds, but he didn’t mean kill. He was referring to the fact that the Bachmanns want to “convert” h0m0sexuals to straight. That would be “extinguishing” h0m0sexuality. You guys aren’t that stupid, you’re trumping up the charge on purpose.

As far as opinion on dayside goes, I’m kinda over it. Most news shows on FNC and MSNBC seem to have some of it, and I’m finding it less and less hard to care. At this point, as long as they’re reporting facts – not making shyte up – go crazy. I seem capable of finding my way through the story with the knowledge of which side of it the anchor favors.

  10. starbroker Says:

He might as well have called her a Nazi. They extinguished g@ys in the concentration camps. He should be on suspension for sure.

Of course there goes liberal Joe in lockstep with fellow liberals. Acting like the Bachmans pull people in off the street to “convert them”.

Roberts had all his “facts” wrong but Joe will still shill for the guy….

  11. stevemg Says:

Roberts makes a living using words. He must know the difference between “convert” or “change” and “extinguish.”

When someone states that a public official wants to “extinguish” an entire group of people – not convert them, not change them, not alter them – we all know what that conveys.

Roberts could have quite easily used the word “convert” instead of “extinguish”. Especially since it’s impossible to “convert” an innate behavior like homosexuality.

Whether he meant murder them or not, he certainly didn’t mean “convert” since that’s ostensibly what Bachmann’s husband – not her – offers people. Who, of course, are free not to take up his offer.

  12. lonestar77 Says:

” I agree that Roberts overstepped his bounds, but he didn’t mean kill.”

So, he said extinguish but he didn’t mean it? I’ll remember that next time (prolly tomorrow) you’re playing the race card. I hope someone on FNC says that Obama wants to extinguish white people. Let’s see your reaction then.

  13. joeremi Says:

You couldn’t follow the logic of a conversation to save your life. I just explained in detail what he meant. If you think he literally believes the Bachmanns want to KILL g@ys, you’re an idiot.

  14. lonestar77 Says:

I don’t literally believe that. Then again, I don’t have a habit of twisting words and extrapolating meanings so I can play the “he’s playing to his racist tea party base” either. I tend to give most people the benefit of the doubt. I don’t just apply it to my side. You should try it.

  15. joeremi Says:

    You should try it.

Eh, where’s the fun in that?

  16. savefarris Says:

Laura L: what a fantastic campaign slogan!

Obama 2012: Everyone Knows I’m Lying!

  17. The ‘bold’ really sells it.. 😉
