Anderson Cooper Comes Out…Much Media Navel Gazing Ensues…

Well, it finally happened. If you have to ask me “What happened?” you have to be living in a cave because it’s been all over the media today. My first reaction was “So what?” It’s not like this was any sort of shock and it’s definitely not like Cooper was the first network news anchor to come out of the closet. He may be the most recognizable name in news to have done so, but after the others who have already done so, it doesn’t alter the media landscape much unless Cooper changes how he approaches either of his shows post-announcement. But I doubt it will. Cooper will likely continue to approach his shows as he has been.

  1. Right on fearless leader!

  2. The fact that two of the best three people at CNN have come out as gay makes me think FNC ought to openly recruit.

    Yes, I belief in profiling.

  3. It may free him up to discuss g@y marriage in a more personal way on his talk show. I suspect doing a daytime talker had a lot to do with this decision.

  4. I believe in a day when all God’s children can spell their preferences with an @

  5. Perhaps WordPress should rethink that one.

  6. Wasn’t so much a closet that he came out of, it was more like a transparent, sound-proofed bubble. I appreciate Mr. Cooper’s reasoning, both for keeping quiet about it in the past and for saying something about it now.

  7. ^ More like a bar in the Village.

  8. Okay, I’ll apologize tor that.

  9. Crap, now we will have to endure hours of Kyra interviewing every gay dude in the country and squirming around with glee in her chair wondering why we aren’t all gay…yet.

    Quite tiresome.

  10. Breaking News on CNN… Anderson Cooper is gay. Wolf Blitzer moderates a panel discussion with Will Cain, Roland Martin, David Gergen, and Gloria Borger regarding the Romney and Obama campaigns response to the shocking news.

    Yawn…

    Yawn…

  12. Is the pressure on another cable news guy now?

    Amen!!! Finally, I am free to articulate that I a str@ight, liber@l democr@t. Sigh… I feel better.

  14. ^^ No pressure Shep. In fact, I miss the days when journalists and news anchors didn’t spend so much time talking about themselves. Really, its not about you. Isn’t that some kind of journalistic golden rule?!?! That went out the window once cable tv news became popular. Like Al, I can understand why Anderson felt the need to finally come out but I always respected his position on keeping his private life private. No revealing interviews, no profile puff pieces, no on-air personal confessionals, he just did his job. Since his daytime show came about, he just can’t shut up about himself.

  15. @KurtSchlichter Anderson Cooper of CNN is ga y. Who knew that Anderson Cooper was on CNN?

  16. Good old Kurt, relevant and hilarious as always.

  17. Cuz, see, nobody watches CNN! 😉

    ^ZING!

  19. And a rimshot, not that there’s anything wrong with that.

  20. icemannyr Says:

Now we can get back to the more important story,
MSNBC beats CNN in prime time.

  21. If AC had announced it on CNN, nobody would know

  22. Funny how ten years ago this would have been a huge story and probably a big controversy. Now no one cares.

It’s the same with the gay marriage business. When the courts and legislatures finally get around to legalizing gay marriage no one will care anymore. It will be old news.

  23. But hopefully Fritz will still turn into a pillar of salt.

    fritz:
One major reason why this isn’t a huge story is because it’s something that just confirmed what pretty much everybody knew. If it were another big name personality who wasn’t assumed to be g@y, it would be a bigger story.

  25. Like a Tom Cruise.

  26. Speaking of, CNN is doing a special called Cruise to Disaster, about the ship that ran aground. Every time I see the name on the crawl, I think it’s about Tom and Katie’s divorce.

  27. beware the Sea of Scientology

  28. “One major reason why this isn’t a huge story is because it’s something that just confirmed what pretty much everybody knew. If it were another big name personality who wasn’t assumed to be g@y, it would be a bigger story.”

^^ Your missing the point LS. Ten years ago any g*y host on cable news that came out of the closet would have been news; even one, like AC or Shep, that everyone knows is g*y. Times have changed. and people don’t care anymore.

  29. … that everyone knows is g*y
There are some who I wouldn’t be surprised to find out they are, but I certainly don’t know.

When did Ellen come out on her sitcom that she was a … Lebanese? And did anyone really care?

  30. “There are some who I wouldn’t be surprised to find out they are, but I certainly don’t know.”

^^ In my experience most cable news hosts that are gossiped about in the media as being g*y either come out eventually or don’t and live with the rumors. None, that I can think of, are eventually proven positively not to be g*y.

  31. “When did Ellen come out on her sitcom that she was a … Lebanese? And did anyone really care?”

^^ I’m talking about cable news personalities.

G*y daytime stars have accepted for decades; although they had to remain closeted. Merv Griffin, Liberace, and Charles Nelson Riley are good examples of obviously g*y entertainers who were very popular, and even parodied, on TV. If they had officially come out they would have been ostracized back then. Now no one would even bother to ask the question.

I think within a few years the same attitude will hold for cable news and even politicians.

  32. My mother always thought Liberace was just a nice, polite young man. As a kid watching him on TV, I had no idea what g@y meant so to me he was a Mr. Rodgers who played the piano.

  33. It’s kind of amazing how innocent, for lack of a non-insulting term, people were about such things.

  34. lonestar77 Says:

    “Your missing the point LS.”

Hey, nobodoy’s perfect! Anyway, I see what you’re saying and you’re prolly correct. Being geigh (my new code word to trick the monitors) isn’t the big deal it was 10 years ago.

Shep, really? Does everybody really think he’s geigh? I don’t.

  35. lonestar77 Says:

“It’s kind of amazing how innocent…”

No sh!t. Now, everybody’s sexuality is out on display 24 hrs a day for the whole world to see. It’s tough to shield my little ones from things they don’t need to be witnessing. Kids can’t just be kids anymore.

  36. Kids can’t just be kids anymore.

Sure they can. By the time they’re old enough to know what all the hub-bub is about they’re also old enough to not give a rat’s… unless an adult is somehow encouraging them to give a rat’s.

  37. Well, back in my day, g@y was still just happy. Even by the time I reached high school. Very naive times.

  38. My biggest low-grade problem as a parent was fact that about every fourth word-pairing in our language now has some sort of sexual connotation. Try sending an Aspie through middle-school under those circumstances. He thinks that those two words just sound funny together, and I’m called into the office for harassment.

  39. -sexual connotations & those two words just sound funny together-

I would never down-play the unique challenges of raising an Aspie. However, in your particular example, it could be that “middle-school boy” covers most of it. Ask my mother.

  40. For what it’s worth, Shep seems to date women.

  41. as did Rock Hudson.

  42. For what it’s worth, no one gives a damn who Shep dates.

  43. Well, Shep does. 😉

  44. His mom does. Wants a good Christian girl.

  45. Stuff it, Joey.

  46. Sit on it, Potsie.

  47. Up your nose with a rubber hose, Horshack.

  48. Whatchu talkin bout?
